sbarnden 397
I guess the extended closure had a good side effect for this years season then!Might need to look at making a trip down there this year myself.
Kingsley 19
Can confirm that they are indeed everywhere, made it very easy to get my limit in just over an hour. Plenty of bait for the next few months and well worth the trip.Tons of people down there today right down the beach.
breambo25 1
Tons of people down there today right down the beach. That's probably because they cost sooo much now. Good to hear fisheries are down there keeping an eye on things. Hate people keeping undersize catches...
Kat 0
sweet.Might head down there tomorrow
Kingsley 19
Good to hear fisheries are down there keeping an eye on things. Hate people keeping undersize catches... be pointless taking undersize cockles considering the legal size ones are so easy to come by at the moment. the bigger worry would be people taking over their limit.glad to say I didn't see anyone taking over their limit, but its a little pointless when you can have wives and family members tag along for a huge bag limit... possession limits anyone?? afishyfish 4
HmmmmmmmmWorking down that way tomorrow so might have to try for some Can anyone give me an idea of how far down the beach they are please ?

breambo25 1
Good to hear fisheries are down there keeping an eye on things. afishyfish 4
The limit is now one hunred This is for goolwa beach ?Didn't even know that had happened Someone tell me that im wrong please :S
fodfa 0
From what i can work out, it would seem that the 100 limit is for those cockles taken from now on, would be for the West Coast only.As i have seen they also live quite well(the goolwa cockle)over there.Cape Catasrophe is on the West Coast and the lines that they are describing would be to my calculations exactly that. Hope i'm right cause i'm off to Goolwa tomorrow to get some And 300 PP at that! afishyfish
afishyfish 4
I was thinking that cape was on KI :side:
fodfa 0
Just did a search on the net and it came up on the West Coast. Will offer the officer on the day part of the catch if i'm over !
Kingsley 19
Cape Catastrophe is south of Pt Lincoln. Last time I checked, Goolwa was far to the east of that http://www.pir.sa.gov.au/fisheries/recreational_fishing/closures/closed_areas/information_sheet_on_pipi_fishing_in_south_australiaQ. How many pipi can I take? The daily recreational bag limit east of the line of longitude 136°E (Cape Catastrophe) is a maximum of 300 pipi per person per day. As of 1 November 2011 a reduced daily recreational bag limit applies west of the line of longitude 136°E of a maximum 100 Pipi per person per day.
afishyfish 4
Thanks guys. Thought I was right but wanted to be certain. Cheers
Kingsley 19
Breambo, I was eluding to the possibility of a total possession limit, say per car, similar to a boat limit being 3x bag limit.Otherwise you'll have every tom dick and harry loading up the Torago with 7 passengers and collecting their 2,400 cockles. As it stands, there is nothing wrong with doing this and many would argue that its their right etc etc. But seriously, how many people need that many cockles? even if you were eating them for a family feast, thats like over 25kg of cockles... or over 50 bags of bait.I went today with the missus and her friend, who both come fishing with me, and we collected enough cockles to last months, possibly the whole summer.I just don't want to see the place turn to crap again is all because it has really turned good this year and it would be nice if it stayed that way. Hopefully most people take their fair share and not hit the place time and time again. snake, afishyfish and Just Me
afishyfish 4
Just at Goolwa Beach now. 32 degrees and almost glassy in spots  Wish I'd bouth the Quinny  Meeting a hooker to go cockling

FeelinFishy 0
Get in there and get them while you can. There is a very real chance this season could be the last. DENR's draft No Take Zone maps had Goolwa Beach closed from approx 1k from the beach entrance.Next few weeks more will be known when final drafts are released.
Kat 0
Thats rough :SI hope however that thought doesnt scare many and fools rape the area In hope of stock pilling....
afishyfish 4
There didnt seem that many down there to take anyway ! Two of us tried a good half dozen spots today for around a hundred each after three hours work :side:
Kingsley 19
What was your technique aff? I found them to be a little deeper than normal and just dug them up by hand letting the wave action erode my dug hole exposing more cockles. I literally dug up thousands of the buggers, a lot of them are undersize. The good old cockle shuffle just doesn't do it for me, I'm a digger
afishyfish 4
Tried all ways Kingsley  Best was as u said, just plain old digging sideways. We found a lot of ours about 10-15cms down. Any deeper than that washer gritty, surely and rocky.
Pottsy 0
Took wife son and dog over and baged out in one hour. 900 cockles, baged and in the freezer ready to go fishing. The dog is only 5 months old and was digging them up as fast as she could. seemed to be sniffing them out and digging
Kingsley 19
Q. What can I use to collect pipi? Recreational fishers may use a cockle rake, bait spade, bait fork or collect by hand. Commercial fishers may use a cockle rake endorsed on their fishery licence or collect by hand.Lucky fisheries weren't there, don't see 'dog' on the permitted devices list :silly: :pWell done, its good fun and the young ones love it. Good slave labour too

Poppa Snake 1,399
sorry if I am cutting in on someones topic, but we have never been to Goolwa b4 and will be at Victor 19 & 20th so can we just rock up and dig a hole & collect them? Also will there be any left by then, dont think I want to bag out just sounds like another experience to add to our list & use when we finally get time to wet the new tubthanx as always poppa snake & super G
Mr_Willy 3
Yes you can just rock up and dig a hole - on the waters edge is the place to be..... Make sure they are over the size limit and don't take more than your 300...Be plenty left - they run right through summer.... Poppa Snake
