I've always gone the other way personally, in through the flesh and out through the skin.....as with everyone else, no real reason, just feels more comfortable for me doing it that way

I always thought the point of the hook protruding on the soft succulent side would increase hookup rate especially if a wary fish was picking at the raw non skin side of the fillet. Probably doesn't make no difference but felt more confident this particular way.

Farbeit for me to contradict most peoples opinions but I have always put the hook through the skin side. I just think the bait sits better that way & looks more "natural" & appears more secure to me . As to the hook up rate well I really dont see what difference that makes as long as the hook point is exposed. Each to their own I guess.

Live bait is obviously always hooked thru the skin!!

Im always rigging salmon slabs with hook point facing out of the flesh, mainly because its easier to have the hook sitting proud (makes sense in my mind anyway)

Quite consistantly have solid hookups on gummies, rays, mullies, even other salmon

    Interesting, Kelvin..

The Mensforth's in their "Baits, Rigs & Lures for South Australian Fishing" book suggest the opposite (for Mulloway, at least), but offer no particular reason for doing so.
    Your rationale sounds plausible, though.
Obviously we need a controlled experiment to get a definitive answer!

Hook through the skin and out the flesh side. If the skin is thick the hook point can roll into the skin and affect the hook up.

Never really paid much attention.. But i guess if i was paying attention when i was doing it the exposed hook would be to the flesh side.. No real reason for it tho.

Hey ppl, a while back I posted similar to what I`ve posted up on this site on FishinSA, a number of people bought the Furi system on my recommendation including Rod, not one of those dozen or so people have said to me that they don`t agree that it is the easiest, most fool-proof system for keeping knives razor sharp that they have ever used or seen. Anyone can use the Furi system, all you have to do is be able to pull your knife thru the fingers horizontally. There is no guessing of angles as with most other sharpening systems, the fingers hold the blade constantly at the correct angle, all you have to do is pull the blade thru the fingers whilst keeping it as upright as possible. Literally anyone that isn`t blind can get a razors edge on a knife using this system. I have tried all manner of sharpeners & once you own this one you`ll wonder how the hell you ever put up with the others. I cannot recommend them any more highly than I already have.

    Cheers

The best I got was the Leyland Brothers, and those blokes couldn't fish for shit.
Having said that, Harry Butler and Malcolm Douglas knew a thing or two, not forgetting Bush Tucker Man, Les Hiddins a few years later.
Alby Mangels knew bugger all about the Australian bush or wildlife, his show was only good for perving on the babes he used to take on his adventures, which were mostly overseas.
These days we are spoilt rotten for fishing and wildlife shows.

if you shape a knife on a grinder you have to take a fair bit off the knife later on the stone as excess heat will make the metal brittle, you don't really need to shape them imo because they are the right shape for 99% of the filleting you will do.I use an Accusharp to get the general angle on the edge right then 5 mins on the wet stone and a touch up with the steel.
                                           cheers b

I used to drink anything but last month clocked up 6 alcohol free days.....not in a row, 6 since 1976.
as you say each to their own, I know people that drink Coopers! fermented Torrens water, well it smells & tastes like it. Now I've started an arguement
What do the X’s in XXXX mean? Back in the day, beer quality was measured in Xs. The brewery’s first brew produced was XXX Sparkling Ale, which was awarded three Xs. The results were promising, but something was missing. So in 1924, they perfected the recipe further, gaining a fourth X.

I have used a bench grinder to shape somewhat, then simply a knife sharpener (average type) to get & keep the blade super sharp. Just wipe & wash the knife to remove any residue from the above processes & thats it. Nice & simple.

My Dad, Bless his soul, sharpened knives using a hand turning type grinder which he made himself. No fancy gear then. Did the job very well when dissecting chickens & other poultry & the like. Mum was always getting him to sharpen the carving/slicing knives by this method.

That's a good question.........I'd be reckoning a coarse oil stone then a finer one.......don't think I'd want to grind or file it,but I could be wrong.

I use a combination of an Accusharp sharpener and a small Ezy-Lap steel. I have heard good things about the block diamond sharpeners. Been on a few charters where the skippers swear by them for keeping an edge on knives when filleting.

My pop used use his bench grinder to get the shape he wanted and start the edge then wetstone then finish it on a steel. I remember seeing use a leather strap to put a really fine sharp edge

Avoid full neoprenes like the plague.
Technology has advanced way beyond the need for it.
You can easily pick up something that is lightweight, breathable, comfortable, and durable that outperforms neoprene.

I have both neoprene and hornes, both have their good points but neoprenes can be a huge pain in the you know what to get in and out of and you sweat like a dog in them and your clothes and socks end up getting soaked anyhow with sweat.
And the Hornes type always end up getting a hole in them somewhere so you end up getting one soaked leg ,nothing worse.
You get repair kits ,but yeah it happens, not that keen on waders, only winter but  neos are probably the lesser of the 2 evils.
The ones I have you can fold them over and wear them like a pair of pants,or pull them up full length,Hodgemans i think they are called, wearing them like that instead of full length seems better.
