    Interesting topic.
    This ^^^
People learn through consequence, plain and simple. You either educate people so they know the consequence ahead of time, by learning from others' mistakes, or you let them experience it 1st hand.
The only way any of the above is possible is with appropriate resourcing, which costs money. Licences would provide money for greater education and more fisheries officers to enforce it.
With time, greater resourcing would see a shift in mindsets.

    G'day all,
I'm wondering how we educate the general public as to size limits of various local & frequently caught species.
I spent a couple of hours having a flick today, firstly off the Largs jetty & then at Birkenhead for a few follows but nothing else.
At Largs were a group of people, early 20's, fishing & crabbing. They caught a couple of ST, small looking to me, which they were going to keep.
I asked them if they knew what they had caught & the minimum length, which they did. So how did you measure them? Oh, I put them up against my phone? WTF?
Her phone was about 18cm long. I measured the fish for them, both undersized. I suggested they release the fish, which they did & that they get themselves a measure. There is a
measuring station on the jetty. I can only assume that they would have kept these small fish & any more they caught if I wasn't there.
At Birkenhead, a family chasing & catching Gar. They were catching plenty, all about 15 to 18 cm & keeping them 😠. I asked if they knew the size limit, yes, 21cm to the tip of the
lower jaw, again, WTF. I filled them in on the actual measurements.
I suggested that they check all size & bag limits before they set off for a fish but they didn't seem interested in that. They left almost straight away after our discussion.
A bit long winded, I know but.............
Do we need a flyer that is handed out at tackle shops etc when these people buy their gear? Or do we need a licence where you have to pass a test? Or what? I'm at a loss.
(the groups were from two completely different racial & cultural backgrounds & spoke English as well most of us do)

They already have a stack of info available on jetties, online, phone apps, etc - so there is really is no excuse.
If they really wanted to be sure, the only way to really do it is send out material to every household in SA.
Then they need to enforce the limits, with appropriate fines and forfeits, not the little nothing fines that don't do anything. Word will spread in all communities very quickly and things will change pretty quick as well. No excuses and no cautions. This will then pay for more fisheries officers.
Personally, I wasn't brought up in a fishing family and self taught when I was around 13/14. So it can be done and currently use my role in the sector to educate as well, particularly as not all my customers have english as a first language. I also deal with a number of single mums who are trying to get their kids into fishing but have no idea about what to do. It's great seeing some of the results they are getting as well. As I say to them, you don't need expensive gear to get results - but you have to care about what you are catching, as it's a finite resource that we need to look after.

@vogon I do not know the answer, but it frustrates the hell out of me.
I do know that there are those that do not know the rules & are surprised when told that what they are doing is illegal.
There are those that do not know the rules but don't care to know them. and
There are those that know the rules but don't care to follow them.
In the shop we are constantly talking to people about fish bag & size limits as well as safety equipment rules laws and it is very disheartening when you get replies like "they've got to catch you" or "I don't do it very often" or "that's not right"
We had an older gent one day tell us that he often gets his 30 Whiting, "fishing by himself", when we told him that it's not allowed he said "the boat limit says 30" we explained that the personal bag limit applies up till 3 people then the boat limit applies, we even showed him where it says that in the size & bag limit flyer from PIRSA but he still wouldn't have it. He's either very ignorant or is planning to use the old "I didn't know" as his defence when he gets busted.
Maybe the answer is more compliance, bigger fines, hit them where it hurts (back pocket). If they've got something to be scared of they might comply more.
And it's not just any one race, it is across the board

and you thought your's was long winded 🙂

I am a health care worker and amateur prepper, so I'll share some of my thoughts. At this stage the restriction is only travelling interstate. Social distancing is easier out of the city and the fishing is better but there are a few down sides I can think about.

If you do go, some of the things to think about are
How is your health? Are you in a high risk group due to medical issues or age? Medical resources thin out rapidly when you get out of Metro Adelaide. While community transmission of Covid is low in SA, things are changing rapidly day to day and week to week. Also as the outbreak continues, local country hospitals will rapidly be overwhelmed and may not be able to assist you. Have you got any contacts in the West Coast that you could stay with or could help you if things get bad? Do you have any family or friends that need assistance back in Adelaide. If you were stuck somewhere are unable to get back to Adelaide, would this be an issue. I see you are reasonably self sufficient already. How much food, water and fuel do you carry and how far could you travel if suddenly things were locked down or if fuel supplies got interrupted? Would you be able to get back to Adelaide if fuel was short? How good is your phone and internet network? I had trouble calling my parents today on the mobile network. They are in Melbourne and I got a prerecorded message from telstra saying that the network was having issues. Have you got any other means of communication is mobile communication and internet go down?

Likely hood of full lockdown is low at the moment but this is what you want to be keeping an eye on
    https://www.health.gov.au/news/australian-health-protection-principal-committee-ahppc-coronavirus-covid-19-statement-on-22-march-2020
The AHPPC advise the government on public health measures. They have already spelt out their trigger for full lockdown and this will be the thing to watch

Or maybe I am overthinking this and we should all go fishing...

Here's a video from another spin session chasing wild trout in the upper reaches of the Meander River, it's all fast water fishing for the experience trout river fisho's..
This was another trip back another off my favorite fast waters, one I haven't fished for quite some time.. I had already fished a stretch of water some three or so kilometres downstream that was full of green algae so decided to make the move to the fast waters again..This video starts from when I entered the fast water, the conditions were good, great flow in the river and the trout were here. They were a little choosy going from one coloured Mepps spinner to another on a regular basis, even used a small unbranded minnow lure for a short time.. Every lure used on this trip caught trout.. The best fish of the day was taken on the smallest spinner a size #00 (1.5gram) Stone Fly Bug spinner, that trout went 1.04 kgs.. cheers
    cheers

Taking a Swig of "Bream Juice" (diet coke) works well for one angler I know.

Repeating the mantra "Cmoooooooonnnnnnn Snapaaahhhh" in the most irritating singing voice you can muster is a guarantee.

Another angler I know does special wrist exercises in the morning before every session.

Arrogantly naming a location after yourself guarantees action

Pulling up the electric and driving off to a new location with out letting your mate finish his retrieve shows you mean business - and the fish at the next spot respect that.

If someone suggests a change of location, the only answer to give is "I dont care, I'll catch 'em anywhere"

Buying a new rod, reel or boat gets you connected to something good the first time you use it.

Never, ever wear any Orange clothing - the bream hate it and so do the Ladies you wave to on the river.

Some people fish better with a hang-over and others dont - trial and error over an extended peiod of time is the only way to sort this out. Once you work out, what works for you - stick to it

These are just a few truths I have gleaned over the years - they may have no place in tournament angling but then again.....maybe the last time you blanked in a comp was because you were wearing "Orange" undies and you didnt have any "Bream Juice" on board

    Common explanations include:
When top-heavy ships of earlier eras would sink, precious little other than the bananas they’d carried would be found floating on the surface, thereby leaving some to conclude conveyance of the fruit itself had led to these naval mishaps. Spiders, snakes, and other poisonous vermin living among bananas carried in the hold would, on long haul trips, expand their horizons by infesting other parts of the ship. Because the speediest sailing ships were used to get bananas to their destinations before they could spoil, those attempting to fish from them never caught anything while trolling. Fisherman became ill after eating the fruit. Other fruits would spoil more quickly when bananas were being shipped along with them, causing folks to deem bananas “bad luck.” (Actually, it wouldn’t have been ill fate that resulted in the spoilage of other foodstuffs, but instead the ethylene gas emitted by bananas as they ripen.) Crew member injured by slipping on discarded banana peels. Fisherman misses landing the big one due to a case of “the runs” caused by bananas he’d ingested. Banana oil rubs off onto the hands of fisherman, thereby “spooking” the fish. Early anglers in Hawaii would embark upon lengthy fishing trips in dugout canoes provisioned with (along with other food items) bananas. The farther they went, the fewer the fish, causing some of them to mistake correlation for causation.

I will start by saying that i have never caught a metro YFW but.........................................
have caught a few at Pt Vincent 🎣
I generally catch & use the nippers same day but I guess if you keep em well they'll be ok.
So, low tide to collect then fish the run in tide almost straight away, running ball sinker, # 4 or # 6 long shank hook.
I walk back in with the tide until the bite stops.
I've seen folk @ Seacliff catching at both low & high tide, the tides aren't bad tomorrow so I'd try Seacliff around the low.
Hope this helps & let us know how you go 😀

I remove the split ring and either tie straight to the lure or more often than not I will use a small Mustad fastach clip that way I can change lures fast without having to re-tie. I've found that removing the split ring & adding a clip hasn't affected lure action even in small light lures i.e. Yellowfin 3-5g lures, I like the Mustad fastach clips because they are rounded & allow the lure to move freely. I mainly use the Mustad fastach clips in 25lb this may seem way overkill but the smaller ones in 15lb are to small for my eyes & fingers 😁😂 so I only use that size when I have to. the 25lb ones are still small and light & I know their strong cause I also use them with my salmon lures

It proves what can be done with a little Government determination.
Obviously not everyone is happy but the majority are the winners. Perhaps our mob could take a leaf out of their book?
The compo packages seem generous enough, wouldn't have thought that to many pros were making big money in the area.
