SurfcaztR got a reaction from doobie in Palm Cove info wanted
Just got back from Palm Cove a few days ago,the first thing getting off the plane in Cairns was we all had face masks on plane and in airport but once you step outside no one had a mask on.I asked the shuttle driver why..too hot.. never seen one again in any shopping centre or cafe during the stay over.
The weather everyday was usually 32 and 24deg overnight, air conditioners run here 24/7.The real heat starts in December and goes through Jan & Feb with lots of humidity.Interestingly no flies or mozzies over the 7 day stay.
The water was surprisingly warm at 28deg while the SA coast currently is at 15deg.Water clarity was bad i had been watching the live beach cams (Palm Cove/Pt Douglas)for months prior to leaving and it has been calm but when you get there it looked dirty,if you go in knee deep you can't see your feet.
While travelling from Clifton beach right through to Port Douglas and beyond never seen one person fish off the beach or rocks, didn't even see any boats within eye view if you want to catch fish get on a boat and go out into deep clear water.Didn't even bother taking out the travel rod and reel.Took a few walks along the jetty and asked the fisho's just as info but no locals, all from the adjacent caravan park killing time.
Here's a few pictures one where the wind came up strong a few days before leaving and the stinger stations (vinigar) spread out along the beach and as for catches yes got 2 Barra, will be editing the video soon.

I prefer overheads for most things above 10-12lb. I find they are better at casting, managing your line and keeping in touch with your bait. They are also better when fighting larger fish and usually smaller and lighter than spinning reels with comparable line capacity. Many people shy away from them because they don't want to take the time to learn how to use them. But everyone is free to make their own tackle choices.🙂

Well it has started. Just saw the trucks etc on the camera
They've given themselves 12 weeks to rip up the old, dredge, install the new and extend the breakwater, pontoons etc...
I can see this blowing out until after Christmas...

SurfcaztR reacted to Meppstas in A ten trout spin session..
This trip was on the 11-9-21
I finally had a reasonable spin session today before the weather turned sour as well as taking a plunge in the water. 10 trout caught & released from 11 hook ups, all taken on the Mepps #00 gold Aglia Mouche Noire & gold Aglia Mouche Rouge inline spinners. I certainly gave the new Okuma ITX-1000 reel a good workout during my three hours in the water too, it did it's job to perfection. As soon as I caught the first trout on the first cast I knew I was in for a good spin session. On the walk back to the car I decided to give one more stretch of water a go, big mistake that was. As I made my way up in waist deep water I trip on a submerged log, Yep!! I took the plunge in the drink, drowned another camera (my third now) too.. Thank you my brain was engaged and I pulled it from the inside of my waders in quick time, it was wet and went a little hay wire when I turned it on. I rushed back to the car and dried it off with the car heater, it's back in good working order again.. Not only that, while heading back to the car I took the camera battery & memory card out to dry them off. After walking some 40 yards or so I couldn't find the memory card, I had dropped it somewhere. I back tracked and was lucky enough to spot it in the grass.. Was it luck or pure arse that I found it, I didn't really care, all that mattered was I found it, plus it had all of the mornings spin session on it as well as 2,600 other photos.. It was still a top few hours spent chasing trout anyway even with the little mishap.. cheers Adrian

Did anyone receive a fishing related Fathers Day Gift?
My son (9 years old) gave me a selection of squid jigs. Amazingly they are all jigs I would have selected 😉. My wife knows I'm a hard person to buy gifts for, so we have a simple arrangement; I buy what I want and store items away in a cupboard, then whether its my birthday, Christmas, etc,. and people ask her what to buy me, she can just go to the cupboard and grab an item. It's a win win, she doesn't have to shop for me and I get what I really want 😀.
The jigs are a mix of rattle, UV, and different weights for different sink rates. There are 3 size 3.0 rattle jigs that are slow sinking, 6 sec/m, for some shallow rocky areas I fish. The Yamashita Egi  OH K is a really nice jig, extremely well made; it is UV reflective and has a little fin at the back to help it stay balanced when sinking. This is a pretty heavy jig for a size 3.5 at 22g (the Daiwa size 3.5 are 18.5g), and has a sink rate of 3sec/m so sinks twice as fast as the 3.0 type S by Daiwa.

See the youtube link below from Yamashita regarding Squid jig rattle. The video is in Japanese but has subtitles.
Most of my jigs are Yamashita's as I like the quality & the technology that goes into the build.
I mainly use the rattle jigs when I first get to a spot for a short period then switch over to a non rattle jig unless the water is dirty then I will use the rattle jig pretty much for the session, I'm also a fan of their warm jacket technology.

So it looks like they might be able to at least, detect sound. They are known to be very curious, so I can not see why it would not help.

I've got several jigs with a rattle. Can't say for certain if they make a difference. I normally put a rattle jig on at the start of a session and on several occasions I had a hit on the first couple of casts, then nothing else for the whole session. This suggests to me, if a squid is about the rattle jig gets their attention.
I like the rattle jigs by Duel and Daiwa. I have one by Rui that I'm yet to try.
I've noticed that jigs are getting a little scarce. The place in Japan I normally buy jigs from has run out of most popular jigs.

I've never seen any ears on a squid so far
But I suppose if the squid are 'on', I'd have a jig with a rattle and one without and see what happens.

Does the built in rattle sound increase catch rate.Ran one yesterday for the first time but not sure yet as the area was lacking after the first few catches without rattle.

The differences could be with scents as it works for one but not the other.
Does the location produce catches, what lure works in that area. What lure action is being used, does the colour or size work for you.Is it the right scent for the species.
So what's the right combination wtfk.🤪

The only way you are going to find out is to buy one of each and go from there.
