So I cut the crabs in half, gave the insides a good clean and put them aside.
In a pan I chopped up some red chillies, some crushed garlic and some grated fresh ginger, quick fry up in a wok using some olive oil then added a cup of water, 4 table spoons of tomato sauce, 1 table spoon of BBQ sauce and a squirt of sweet chilli sauce.
Once up to boil, added the crabs , stirred it all thru and put a lid on the wok.
Checked every couple minutes and kept tossing to ensure all the crab started turning red.
Added a bit of corn flower and kept simmering. After 10 mins, I moved the crabs to a side in the wok, added a beaten egg and a some chopped spring onion, re-stirred and left to simmer for another 5mins.
Served on a plate with parsley garnish.
Been a while since I’ve enjoyed a new meal so much!!

Jay R reacted to RecFish SA in Weir at mouth of Onkaparinga River?!
    Hello,

As the comments here sum up very well, this appears to be a narrowly focused initiative, with scant regard for the likely ecological and fishery productivity impacts.

I spoke with Cr Bill Jamieson yesterday to try to better understand where the proponents are coming from and to make sure that the media had not muddied the waters. Unfortunately it does seem rather accurate that they want to do this just for recreation and it seems they have entirely dismissed any hope of restoring any freshwater flows to the Onkaparinga estuary.

I informed the Councillor that despite the low freshwater flows, the river ecology is very important/significant and has been appearing to improve in recent years. Also that the best ecologists in Australia advocate for restoring tidal flows (not limiting them) as a means to improve river health and that in fact, there is a direct link between estuary productivity and tidal flow/exchange. I also let him know that fishers have secured a grant of $20,000 to improve river habitat and that he should think it reasonable that the sizable angling community will be against this proposal as it appears.

The Councillor has sent RecFish SA his report and we will be responding appropriately.

Great to see so many on here and elsewhere on social media who have a really great understanding of the importance of natural river processes and who are ready to stand up to protect this wonderful and unique South Australian Estuary.

    Kind Regards,
    David Ciaravolo

Hi guys,Haven't been online for ages but thought I would share a personal triumph of mine and believe it or not caught this bad boy from my own tub which makes it so much more meaningful. Caught down the south east about a month ago after a long fishing drought due to building a house and losing my job amongst other things. Bled weight was 108kg caught on a billmark skirt in Lumo. Outfit was okuma makaira 80w on custom status deluxe game rod. Also released one of similar size aswell which we didnt get any pics of as we were only 2 up and put the fishes health 1st for the release. Also special mention to my mate Shaun who was a big part of this, this kind of fishing is definitely a team sport.cheers

The Plan: Start at 10am at Southport and hit most southern beaches through to Sellicks and return finishing aback at Southport.

    Did it succeed: Nope.

OK, so decided to hit Southport at 10am leading to the low tide at 11.30am and to lure for Salmon all day.
Was not expecting to catch anything at Southport, as have not yet done so, plus the low tide was not going to help any.

The only thing happening or moving at Southport were the walkers along the beach.
(now I'm not talking walkers from "The Walking Dead" from the series for those who have watched it).

So after about an hour luring it was off to Maslins and still only half expecting anything to take a lure at this stage of the day.

But, some excitement for me....a green floating ball.

But that was enough excitement for me, and as not takers for my lure it was off to Pt Willunga.

Arrived at the carpark and had a bite to eat whilst surveying the area - looked good.

Then.....something caught my eye......another bloody ball.  Thought for a moment it got here from Maslins before I did, but a different colour, but at least it smiled

So back to luring at yet again something took my eye....

    Then it all appeared.....a shark?

    Nope....a friendly.

There was probably about a dozen dolphins swimming around about only 50m out and with some chasing something out there.

So I replaced my Halco 40g lure to a Halco 55g lure for a little extra distance thinking they might be scaring some Salmon closer to shore.

Just purchased these Halco's so was hoping for results.

Third cast and twang, the Halco 55g travelled very well and sunk to the ocean floor

So here is a tip for all: Always make sure your reel latch is open before casting

The dolphins headed North - the way I was going anyway and then one dolphin leaped out of the water with wave - looked fantastic - I gave it a 10

    They were then gone.

Maybe they scared some Salmon in close as this was the result near the Northern end.

So I was happy that, to get something was a relief, but then.........it happens again

    Yep, another   ball.

What is it with balls today I have no idea, but they are following me

The few Salmon were then also gone and was thinking now to go to Sellicks, but this was in the distance

Now I was thinking I was not prepared for that much rain and seeing I had hooked a few at PW, why not stick to a good thing.

Got a little bored with no takers so I etched this into the sand.

If you can't make it out, it says 'Strike Hook.com'

So ended up staying at PW without going back to Maslins or Southport due to time (about 4pm now).

But a great day of weather and entertainment plus a bonus Salmon and ST.

Jay R reacted to doobie in I thought all Salmon had gone, but nope... not all of 'em
I have been wondering lately, especially over the last week, to whether the salmon have actually disappeared.
Many of us have had dreadful times in trying to find them and to even catch the bugga's.

Lately I have been heading down to Maslin Beach because it is only 5minutes from my house - so it is convenience more than anything.

I've walked up and down that beach luring only and expecting something due to some good catches about 3 - 4 weeks ago.

But on the last 6 or so occasions of going there morning and afternoon I came home with nothing....again !

So I checked the tides for today and wondered about going to waits with a north/east and high tide about 2pm.

But first at 7pm, I left home and head to Maslin's first for the out going tide for one more shot.

Slight ripple on the water and quite brisk.

The sun coming up and shining on the cliffs and about to pock its head onto the beach.

But this had been washed up ....a barracuda, about 1.2mtrs long !!  I thought a first it was a big snook but those large upper teeth gave it away.

But no touches as usual, so off the Port Willunga and nothing either except for a couple of other fishermen - and they didn't stay long.

Ok, now to Waits and Parson and will be there about 2 hours before high tide and went to Parsons first.

Looked beautiful from the top but not many gutters showing up, some seem to have 'gone'.

I was disappointed nothing attacked my lure for the walk to the end, so pondered about attempting from the rocks...snags, losing lures, slippery, getting washed out to sea etc.

But thought don't be pathetic and give it a go.

Picking the right spot to cast and bang, a solid hit and with a wave coming in I could see another 4 trying to attack the lure.

Maneuvered the salmon around the rocks best I could but it was fighting hard.  Got the salmon (about 1kg) to the rocks about 1m below me but heavy to lift up and as doing so it dropped

The next half hour of luring for them and they had disappeared.

So walked backed to head off to Waits (and cursing most of the way).

(btw, the steps to the sand at Waits have been closed off - you know, the steps with the big jump from the last step. Need to walk to left to get down - working sorting it out).

So now high tide was nearly in, so do I go right or left ...... left it was.... and decided to go where a chap had bagged out on our August S&H Salmon day.

Walking to this point there were other fishers using baits but had not caught anything.  A few of them mentioned they were losing baits to crabs, so must have been a few around.

Got to the spot and first cast this happens. (And mind you it was a little tricky holding rod and taking a photo by yourself).

And this was result- just touching 50cm.

I had been using a 40g Stinger with a single hook leading up to here, but changed to the chrome 3 hook (incidentally, the lure was from The Fishing Guru, so everyone should get his lures...they work)

Most casts were getting hit and mostly by ST's .

Before to long, another good fight from another Salmon - about 40cm.

Another 40cm hit and was at my feet and dropped off only for a wave to come in and it was gone

And no joke, as one of those pacific gulls was watching and waiting, it gave out its 'voice' and it really sounded like it was laughing at me - so told it to  off, but it didn't.

So not a bad ending to the day, a nice catch - kept a few ST's to do some patties  â€‹

Hope you enjoyed the (loooong) read.

Jay R reacted to The Fishing Guru in Southport 30/08 - THE SALMON DROUGHT CONTINUES :(
Seemed like a great idea at the the time. I jumped at the suggestion of heading out with a mate as the wind was looking to be minimal and after all, I am still yet to catch a salmon this season. Seriously, if we head to Waits they will all be surfing the waves at Morgans . . . a Sellicks trip will guarantee the fish are at Southport . . . if we then tried to chase them at Southport, they would head up to Moana and a couple of Goolwa Beach runs have proven unsuccessful also.

Starting to think there is actually a mole in the schools, who's sole purpose is to keep a lookout for the Guru and warn the others lol.

Anyhoos, arrived on location at the standard ungodly hour and was absolutely blown away by the image in front of me. It is a very rare occasion that I would consider the Onk to be an 'AMAZING' photographic specimen but . .

. . Wow. With the full moon above the Surf Club, the footbridge lit up perfectly and the fact that there was absolutely no surface movement on the water whatsoever. I just really wish I had my SLR to capture it properly, as the Samsung camera does not do the scene justice.

aaaaaaaand back to Salmon again. So the weather conditions were perfect (a little too perfect?) Barely a light breath of wind, cold but not "holy crap, my testicles are completely frozen" cold and the swell was tame enough to allow us to get out onto the sand bar at high tide, where we then proceeded to take a couple of snaps and make a few jokes comparing ourselves to a certain Mesiah.

My mate was already out when I arrived, trying on baits with no success exept for a couple of pickers cleaning him out so we both progressed to flicking lures off the sand bar.

After what seemed like an eternity (in reality, probably only 20 minutes or so) my mate finally hooks up on a little troutie. You beauty I thought, finally some fish and as he was unhooking that specimen, I also had a little one hooked up. Unfortunately I lost mine at the water line as he managed to shake the hook right at the very second I went to grab him (still on the sandbar at this stage)

Another 20 or so minutes later and my mate pulls another one out and that was literally it for the day. All up, my mate found 2 juveniles around the 27cm mark and my Salmon Drought contiues

Absolutely awesome morning for it though . . . maybe next time

Well have managed a couple trips out on the northern flats for the month so far and got into good fish both times.

First time was out was 2nd August with my friend who's now on the site as TommisnSalmon chucking lures and getting into some good fish holding fairly close in over broken lumpy ground. No Strikehook gear for the comp though.

Weather was crap with rain and moderate winds but we managed to position ourselves upwind of some schools and got into fish from just over legal up to the 40's.

Then got away again on Saturday 15th with Underpants and his mate Blackdog3. Was out pretty early and the weather was fantastic for it early in the morning. Even had to strip off some of my insulation as I was getting a bit cooked when the sun was out. There was a lot of early morning fog which was interesting to fish in being able to see nothing but the water and grey cloud around us.

Was plenty of interesting life around the place.

Lots of activity everywhere. Was a small group of dolphins close in chasing fish in knee to waist deep water making huge bow waves and birds hovering overhead looking for scraps.

    http://youtu.be/p8K_YDL5aGM

We got into fish fairly quickly. I was trying out some new lures, in particular a Savage Gear 2.5" Manic Shrimp which worked was working great on the little salmon trout but didn't land anything special. Underpants quickly got into some good fish with soft plastics.

We moved further out while Blackdog3 stayed behind which was a solid move on his part as further out in the sort of channel and gutter systems where normally good fish school up we struggled to get a hit. I managed a couple of good follows from salmon trout and some nice sized snook but no commits and Underpants managed to net some solid squid but as for the good salmon schools they were absent, holding again in the lumpy broken ground further in where there was no clear channels or gutter systems, just sandy holes with scattered high lumps of weedy patches.

We headed back to that area spotting some nice rays, one right up on shallow flats waving its wings in the air and a massive one that came right up to my feet to check me out. Underpants also manhandled a huge Pt Jackson that kept trying to eat the catch in his keepnet! Those things are like badly behaved puppies sometimes.

Managed to get into some good fish myself, switching over to a 68mm black-chrome Shimano Waxwing fitted with a quality single hook. I find this a great searching lure as it casts like a metal but can be fished with a slower hardbody like action and with the single I find it to be a bit more weed resistant than a metal as the 'wings' push floating weed up and away from the body a little when pulled through.

Was a good days out fishing with company, hopefully can find time to get out again with the fly rod next time. And to finish off Underpants sent through a pic of his cleaning table once he got the fish he kept home:

Had a pack of the old Z-Man grubs that were sitting mashed up at the bottom of the bag, before they included that plastic insert to keep them separate and sorted, which had gone all kinked, twisted and generally misshapen.

So thought I would try something I've seen on the net for fixing up some types of SP's when they get out of shape.

Boiled up some water and dunked them. Once they are hot remove them and immediately try and flatten and shape the tail. They cool off very quickly when removed from water so you need to be quick and work at it a few times.

Managed to get a few into shape. Need to do them one at a time otherwise they will stick to each other in the water and get even more out of shape. The best ones were ones I had mounted on jigheads, so it would sink to the bottom of the glass and the tail would float up, in the hot water it formed the right shape and pulling it out with a spoon I could press it straightaway and it turned out looking good.

Couldn't get all the kinks out but I was satisfied with the end result. One thing to be aware of was pulling the tail too much, when hot it seems to weaken the plastic and the tails can be pulled right of the grub body. Seemed fine and strong again once it cooled.

Would have been an almost lightning strike.

Before lightning actually strikes you get 2 things, one is channels of negative charges coming down from the sky and then you get multiple points of positive charges trying to go up to meet it. When they manage to meet halfway to bridge the gap then the lightning happens. But you can have failed ones, if your looking in just the right place you can sometimes see a faint red glow going up. There have been photo's of people standing around and when the photo develops they see a weird finger of light coming out of the ground heading toward the sky.

Standing near one apparently gives a weird electrical buzzing/whining sound and the static can cause all sorts of effects like lifting things up.

While early morning fishing/squidding off the rocks at Memory Cove with my son about 10 years ago we noticed a strange shape buzzing around in the water near our feet, pops its head up and its a Little penguin. Cool to see, but it gets more weird..... It susses us out for a few minutes then scrambles out onto the rocks and stands with us! In fact it stood right between us. "What is it doing Dad?"  Well as I don't do penguin I guessed at it either being ill or it was mightily lost and confused and thought we were big penguins! My 10 year old daughter joined us on the rocks and was so excited to see this beautiful little creature and as all kids like to do she wants to pat it. I said there is no way it will let you and as all kids like to do she proved me wrong! Obviously we didn't want to overly interfere with this creature, and once she had touched it and proved me wrong we left it to own devices and we fished on. It would occasionally have a swim and then get back out and hang with us again. Weird as! We finished up and as soon we left the penguin jumped in and I thought that was that.... Glanced back once, and then twice, and on the second occasion watched in amazement as a sea eagle swooped down from behind where we were standing and plucked our little friend from the water and carried it off to the other side of the cove. Without a word I walked on hoping to god that my daughter wouldn't look back, but of course she did, and then we got "wow Dad look at that big bird"... "oh what's it got, it's carrying something".... "on nooo the penguin Dad, it's got the penguin"!!! That's when you do your best explanation of that's how nature works, blah, blah, blah, but obviously that doesn't help a small person who has just lost her new favourite animal in the world, ever!!!
That year we were unlucky enough to come across many dead emus on the drive in to Memory Cove, a dead seal on the beach and the loss of our little friend. We renamed it Memorial Cove that year!
