So i have been given the opportunity to get away for the week with the olds to Cairns. We are staying in Palm Cove and being me I will be taking a couple travel rods to have a bit of a flick
I will be doing it all landbased and taking lures with me. What sort of gear should i take?
What Rod/Reel combos? and lures should I be taking?
I know there is a little creek system a couple hundred metres from our hotel that has Barra, Tarpon, jacks in it and I know Palm Cove jetty itself has plenty of fish. But is there anywhere else i should be trying?
We will be having a hire car to get around so I don't mind travelling a bit. i got just over a month to sort some stuff out so any tips or hints would be fantastic

G'day Nick and what UP has mentioned is very good and some great tips.
I live down South and mostly fish from Pt Noarlunga jetty during Summer where you can get are good variety of fish.
Fishing the low tide doesn't bother me, but do prefer to have an incoming tide. That said, and if fish are on the slow side, once the tide turns then many time the fish come on the bite better.
From the jetty around low tide, you can get Gar (towards end of jetty with Gents - but drop a burley bucket in as well to bring them in), small tommies (but can be a nuisance at times) and squid (when water is clear helps and dodge tides the squid will be there too).
In the shallows you could get onto some Mullet, maybe YFW (and bream by the submerged rocks but not if water is out too far).
Some  good ST/Salmon of late using SP's about 1/3 way along.
Jetty to Onk river can get Mullet, YFW, ST's and good Salmon when they come in.
I don't fish the Onk, but see people fishing low tide, but they don't seem to have much water to play with imo. But they get YFW, Mullet, Bream and if very lucky a Mully.
Christies Beach each side of the outlet, can get ST, YFW and Mullet and the O'sullies breakwater Mullet, Bream, St and Gar.
The other beaches, Moana, Maslins and Pt Willunga have Mullet, occassional YFW, STs and Salmon.
You can Gar from all the beaches, but you need to burley (stick a rod holder into sand and put burley bucket to it - not with rope, use a clip for ease).
Hope that helps, but I reckon you'll need to burley up for all species to help cause

Low tide wading is one of my favorite ways to fish!
Enables you to cover a lot of ground and find any structure where the fish might be holding that you cant usually reach.
Im not overly familiar with the Southern area. You mention Noarlinga - try around casting some slugs & SPs in and around the the Onk mouth. Otherwise i'm thinking Marino, Hallet Cove, Pt Willunga, Maslins, Sellicks, O'Sullies?
Basically anywhere where there is structure. Working the blue line is a great start but anywhere where there is structure; in and around holes, gutters, reef, broken ground etc.
Light tackle and predominantly lures readily land ST, tommies, squid, snook & flatties. Small worm SPs will land both yfw & kgw but you'll likely need bait for the gar. Could always wade out to the blue line and burley as usual for gar. Likely bring in tommies, gar and if your lucky - squid & snook too!

With the new laws in place for PFD's I had a browse through the suppliers "rewards" and found this.
Cost me $0.00, no need for govt. voucher exchange and didn't leave the office. 3 clicks on the mouse and 2 days later delivered to my desk.
Would have used as the Squid Queens birthday present but she works in the same building

Now that's a big KG , a mate caught a 1.2 kg fish @ 63cm down at cape Jaffa a few years back and that was big, 1.6kg is a monster fish , I wonder if they ever catch then around that size in numbers ? You only seem to hear about one large one , mind you be no complaining from me lol .

Here's a photo of a 1.6 kg KGW caught here in Tassie last week, with a legal size of 35 cms and a bag limit of 5 fish per person now in place here a few around that size would be plenty any way..
There's also a limit of only 10 KGW allowed per household as well.. With more KGW being caught down here they Fisheries thought it wise to bring in these regulations because there weren't any on them before.
KGW are becoming a common catch across the North & the East Coast of Tassie in the St Helens area and fish in the 50 cm - 60 cm range are quite common.

    Hi guys,

I had the day off work yesterday as I had an electrician at my house replacing the meter board and after he left I went down to Yamaha Pitmans Marine on Main North Road to see if they could help me with some alterations to my offshore life jacket.
As my biggest fear when out on the water is losing contact with my yak, if this ever happens I want to make sure that I have my PLB and handheld VHF radio with me, what I wanted doing is some straps sewn on at about the collar bone to hold my marine radio on my left collar bone and my PLB on my right collar bone and for these alterations to be robust enough to handle the salt water environment and be strong enough that they don't break if the air-bag ever goes off.
I was directed out the back to talk to the guy who makes/alters their canopies who kindly did the alterations and all he wanted in return was that I catch a 30kg SBT from my yak so I said I'd mention his great service online.

A strap with velcro on the left to hold the PLB and a strap for the alligator clip of the handheld VHF on the right.

All set to go, well when I go offshore I tend to wear my normal life jacket under this one as my normal life jacket is as much a utility belt to me as it's a life jacket so they'll sit a little higher.

In reality Victor may be your best starting point. There is a lot more other stuff available; pubs, restarunts, cafes, playgrounds etc, I just don't really like the place! Lots more people & tourists and the fishing spots get hit up pretty hard.
Cheeky Ratbags is a great play cafe for the little ones. Whale Museum, when kids are a little older. Apparently the Pork Pie Shop does fantastic English pork pies and other traditional pies. Cockle train runs Victor-Goolwa, check the times. My son was/is obsessed with trains. This can be a proper steam train too, although I dont think so during the Fire Ban Season.
Will 2nd Doobs, the Causway foreshore area is quite pretty. Nicely grassed and lined with mature Norfolk Island Pines.
    A couple of other ideas:
Rapid Bay Caravan Park. Right on the foreshore and quick walking distance to jetty/beach and rock fishing. Great for the fishing although not necessarily much to do with the family during the day. Rental at Cape Jervis. Never looked at it but there must be some available. Would put you in the vicinity of some of Kuerschie's flathead/salmon posts from month or so back. Yankallila bakery Ive fished Deep Creek Conservation Park (so no dog) a bit. What vehicle do you have?- where i go requires 4x4 access. Nothing fancy required. My Subaru's are fine. and if your all OK with camping, would be a good spot once the weather cools a bit.

Victor Harbour is a popular spot. You have many accommodation choices as well as eateries.
Granite island is a good family destination, there is a horse drawn tram thingy that crosses the causeway to the island (quite cheap). Once on the island there is a nice walk around it (not too far or strenuous) with ocean views everywhere. Calble lift to the bottom. At night on the island you can watch the ferry penguins come ashore. People fish of the wharf area, the causeway and off the rocks on the island.
