Where have you fished before? What type of fishing do you do and what is your skill level? What do you want to catch? Are you interested in lots of little fish and plenty of action, or putting in lots of time for a chance of a legal fish but less smaller ones? What rod and reel do you have? No point buying an expensive rod and reel as it won't catch you any more fish if you don't know what you are doing. How far are you willign to travel? Are you willing to fish at night or in rough weather? There are many variables to consider before we can suggest some options.Learning to fish, westlakes is good as you will get plenty of bites and the occassional legal bream. Plenty of tommies off the metro jetties in the evening if you know how.One of the bigger species to catch will be salmon off port noarlunga jetty in winter during a storm but you will need to wait till at least autumn.Another tip I will give you is don't chase the rumors or reports and fish the same location for at least a dozen or two times. Any of the jetties will hold fish at the right time and although the learning curve is steep, plenty of good fish can be caught. You can bag on gar, tommies, YFW, and squid at the right time if you know what you are doing.Set your goals small at first. Tommies and squid are a good beginner target off the jetties and provide a good feed. Bream in westlakes are a good target to practice on.

In the shoulder, just under the skin, no deeper than 1cm. If you hit the spine you will kill the bait. If you go too deep with too big a hook you will kill the fish. If you pin the fish too shallow the hook can tear out or bait comes off during the cast.

When I first moved to Adelaide quite a few years ago I used to live in one of the residential colleges near the Uni. I fished a few times a week in the Torrens and pulled out some big carp {SMILIES_PATH}/smiley.gifSome of the big ones were over 1m. I used to use an 8lb handline alot just for fun. Lost some big fish to snags though. http://www.fishyorkepeninsula.com/images/attachments/tkN0Apz7__1423.jpg[/img]

My parents are visiting at the moment and were keen for some seafood. I don't like fishing during holidays and the last few days reminded me why.Sunday hit up Goolwa. Carpark was full to overflowing with cars lined up on both sides of the road a good 50m away. Got 400 cockles between 3 people but took around 2 hours.Went to Sugars and was met by over 30 boats, 50 4 wheel drives on the other side and at least 50 people fishing from shore. It was difficult fishing in such crowds and I had 3 boats within casting distance. Every 10min, another boat would go past. Managed 1 bream and 17 mullet.Yesterday went to Wallaroo with my dad to get some Crabs. Fished 4 hours over the low tide in the middle of the day off the jetty and managed 14. Plenty of undersized ones with around 10 undersized to 1 keeper. Also caught a dozen tommies and 2 leatherjacket.Today hit up a local beach. Struggled to get a park. Caught 3 squid and 10 YFW.

For my expensive japanese knives I use various grades of stones.

All you need are your hands and feet and a bucket to put them in. The cockles are anywhere from just short of the high water mark down to the low water level. At the moment they are out a bit deeper so low tide is easier.Wade out a bit and twist your feet. You will feel them under your bare feet and can pick them up by hand. Remember to take a measure as many are undersize. If you are not getting any, try shallower or deeper and keep moving down the beach. When you hit a patch you can pull dozens without moving very far.Put them in an esky and keep them cool

Sorry, I was been sarcastic. I don't think anyone uses proper tapered shock leaders here in Australia and most people will have no idea what you are talking about or assume you are after a flyfishing leader. The casting guys using them here all import them.Importing from NZ might be an idea as wellhttp://www.tackletactics.co.nz/leader.html

Expensive gear is just so nice to use.One of the snapper outfits I use is a pair of saltiga surf threadlines with a pair of custom Poseidon 5 surf rods. Over $1000 each combo

I like the seajiggers, but have recently moved onto 12 foot surf rods for the extra distance and control. If I am shore based and not jetty based I will use my 14 foot surf rods.

On the spool with several wraps at least. A heavy leader is essential for casting heavy weights and preventing bustoffs, especially power casting (OTG, pendulum).A rough rule if 10lb of leader for every ounce of casting weight.Eg casting 4oz, use a 40lb leader. 6 oz, use 60lbHowever not many rods available off the rack here in Australia have the power for proper power casting.

Like most I started with fireline, then moved to power pro and fins. I use sunline castaway on my bream gear, and daiwa accudepth tournament on the snapper rod and Varivas Avani GT for the heavy stuff.Fins is not bad, better than fireline.

Bagged out in Westlakes yesterday from the Yak. Most fish took the double clutch, but the bushy's stiffy minnow also did well. Unfortunately for the shore based lurecasters, the fish were just out of casting distance and they had to watch me pull up fish after fish.I usually just bleed by cutting the neck, let the blood drain, a quick rinse, then straight on ice.
