With the weather looking good today, i went to Outer Harbour about 8am with nothing really particular in mind what to fish. My plan was fishing down the end of the breakwall but i only got half way as my leg were hurting. Didn't waste my time, i setup my rod and start fishing with squid head as a bait. Five minute later, something grab my bait and it was dog shark... and again and again and again... five dog shark in a raw?!. Really annoying but they really give a good fight. With just dog shark taking my bait, i just wanted to go home but when i about to pack my thing suddenly seeeesss...seeeesssssssssssssssss... my reel running very fast. Grab my rod and let it run for awhile but when i realised my line getting short i try to give it a fight. Really heavy. My mind start debating "is this ray?" but it running very fast. It probably a mulloway too. After fighting for maybe 3 or 4 minute, my 10kg line snapped and the fish escape . Lesson for me (use much bigger line).Upset but satisfying at the same time as this is the first time i fight fish that heavy. Even if i managed to land the fish, thinking of how i get there i will have to release it . So that it for me today. I didn't catch any fish but surely I'll be back :cheer:

My old mate who I attribute my Snapper captures to talks about the Moon being like a big bowl and there are certain times of the Moon phase when the "Bowl" is tipping its contents out  ?He then went on to tell me that there were Snapper in that "Bowl" and they would fall into my boat .I have to admit there was a strong odour coming from the back of the vessel during this lesson but due to the amount of fish "falling" into my boat at the time via my fishing rod I failed to investigate said odour.

i reckon it's all to do with the moon phase's, tides, etc go out and have a crack after a falling barometer its like they are famished and will smash ny on anything article about them in sunday mail today, similar to this i just found SEX sessions lasting up to three hours leave squid so exhausted that they have a reduced ability to swim, Melbourne University research revealed. The findings - which may first appear salacious - actually reveal a lot about the species and the way its limited lifespan informs its behaviour.A paper published yesterday in the international journal Biology Letters is the first to outline the energetic costs of mating on the dumpling squid and the impact sex has on physical abilities after mating.Science masters student Amanda Franklin led the research, which found that both the male and female squid experienced a reduced ability to swim for up to 30 minutes after mating with each partner. This left them vulnerable to predators and with a reduced window for the nocturnal creatures to find other mates and to feed.'If mating is energetically costly, which it is, then there has to be benefits which outweigh that,'' she said. ''There has to be a reason why they do what they do.''Franklin said in the case of the dumpling squid, this was because of its limited lifespan of less than a year, with adults sexually mature for just four months.''There's a short sexually mature period, so there are costs associated with mating but that is offset because they produce more young and get to pass on their genes.''Franklin said the promiscuous squid have multiple partners, with the mating initiated by the males ''whenever the opportunity arises''. ''Pretty much whenever he sees a female he will go for it and if he can get her, then she has to mate with him as she can't escape,'' Franklin said.To reduce the risk of attack while recovering, the squid bury themselves in sand on the sea floor and can also produce a cloud of ink when challenged to help them escape from predators.Franklin, with zoology department colleagues Zoe Squires and Devi Stuart-Fox, studied dumpling squid found in shallow waters around Port Phillip Bay and Tasmania. The squid mate year-round and are nocturnal and grow to about 7 centimetres long as adultscheers 4THA

protactic reacted to Ranger in Which 4WD for Fishing ?
When you say "for fishing trips" I can only imagine this means beach driving. If that IS the case, it's got me buggered why everyone is recommending a big heavy Patrol which is gonna bog down.I'd be looking for something small to mid range, which is lighter and nimble. For my money when on a budget I dont recon you could go past a Pajero. The Toyota Surfs I've heard have wiring issues, and it's hard to find one which hasn't been flogged. The 4 runners will definately fit into a budget. The Toyota Hilux is a sturdy workhorse which wont let you down.Actually, if I had to operate on a budget of $8-10k I recon the only two vehicles I would automatically rule out would be the Patrols and the Landcruisers.

protactic reacted to TT in approx. $250 SP snapper rod?
Hey Mate. I am actually also in the process of buying a SP Snapper Rod/Combo. What I have chosen is the Shimano Jewel 762 Snapper 5 - 8 KG and will be teaming it up with a Shimano Saros 4000F. It will set you back around $260 full combo. (Not inc. Braid) But it just depends what brands you like. I am a Shimano man so for around that price rangee you could get a really top qaulity Rod. I reckon the T Curve T Series 701 Snapper would be right up your alley. $245 on Motackle. Check it out here mate! http://www.motackle.com.au/index.cfm?pr=product&product_id=4088TT
