Location/size/quantity, all irrelevant...they`ll just keep doing it until they`re busted, when and if.Whereupon plead ignorance (whether genuine or not), possibly let off with a caution, have a few recfishing guides handed out to them - which even odds will get piffed out the car window on the way home.Without a Singapore-style law enforcement approach (or at the very least a five/ten-fold increase in fisheries officer numbers) this sort of stuff will just keep on happening unfortunately. But there is every likelyhood that the big fisheries boat with attendant rubber ducky will be prowling the north coast of KI on the morning of 30th November to make sure that a couple of dozen boats (at most) in that part of the world don`t have a snapper on board before, lord forbid, the stroke of midday (YES, they raced into the Stokes Bay environs a couple of years ago on "the day" at 1130!)...never mind the nightly metro jetty slaughter courtesy of the WGAF, "no spik ingrish" and "not my bucket, mate" undersize/overbag brigade.Oh my, the priorities... :vomit:

I think that this one would suffice @ Crispy- it's funny, in all my relationships I have always been the one keen on fishing. Funny but every time we would go to the jetty, people would just assume I was the poor missus being dragged along when in actual fact I was the one who had to do the dragging...(and the knots, baiting, etc, etc).... such is life

That's pretty disappointing to hear When I was at Port Vincent in August I noticed a whole lot of Snapper heads/frames laying at the bottom of the shallow water adjacent to the pub. They were quite obviously young/juvenile and definitely not legal size. Made me pretty cross. I also get cranky when I see these sort of things. I see it happen ALL TOO OFTEN being a land-based fisherwoman particularly with crabs. I always carry a couple of extra crab measures with me and let people know if they are doing the wrong thing. Sometimes it can be intimidating though, a lot of fisherMEN are very....chauvenistic dinosaurs who still see fishing as a man's sport and don't enjoy a woman questioning them (BITE ME). It's a shame. It's people like that who ruin it for everyone.I have on more than one occasion given Fishwatch a ring because of the number of tiny crabs (or berry-carrying females) I have seen being kept and unfortunately, while they are happy that I called them, they were not able to send anyone out. Understaffed volunteer-wise. Every time I catch a fish I end up second guessing myself. Went through the "is it a juvenile salmon or a tommy" phase a while back. Thank goodness for the yellow decoration....

Alright, I'll qualify my statement by first saying that I've fished (or used to) fish Pt Giles jetty a helluva lot. One time I saw a school of Dolphin fish cruise past. Big suckers they were and one fella hooked one and we got a real good look before it fell out of the crab net they tried to land it in. This was a fluke, but a very pleasant occurrence that Im really happy to have witnessed and it remains a great memory for me and my old man ....but does that mean I ought to admit to dolphin fish being a viable target from the end of Giles??? No way and I think that was the spirit of the question asked at the beginning of this thread 'that kings are IN westlakes'. 1. I have fished westlakes and port system since I was a kid. And now a days get a fair bit of info from fishing aqaintances and tackle rats in store.... Never ONE single report I've heard.2. If I had to pick one person for an opinion on what's available in WestLakes, it would be SamboMan who knows the place like the back of his hand. You don't just wake up one morning and regularly catch the trophy bream and mulloway from the system. With out power boat access, the kayakers are the ones most likely in the know.... And Samboman happens to be the state champion hobie breamer and top ten in Australia. Probably the bushy or starlo of our westlakes system!!!!(and I don't know this fella or have any interest in blowing sunshine up his bum it's just the Facts). There ain't any Kingies in Westlakes fellas ;)There isn't any black and white in this world and all the theory in the world can prove something but if in Practice there's no capture, you may as well argue the existence of the loch ness monster. Discussion and disagreement is good, but no name calling hey lads. Else I have to come back as Jack the moderator in Blue Ink ;)Cheers all

One of my biggest tips is to buy and use a berley pot. When you think about it no matter where you fish landbased, most of the fish are either spread out due to numerous bait along the jetty or they are just spread over a wide area.If you use a burley pot just with Aniseed burley you are dramatically increasing your chance of catching tommies, gar in summer but in winter it increases your chances of catching salmon trout as wellAs others have said you need to make sure your hook is the right size to hook whats in your burley trail. Learn to understand what depths fish swim at and feed at. Gar and tommies are surface feeders and subsequently normally caught on the top, whilst Bream, salmon and whiting you can catch on the bottom. Here are some baits that I would use for different species. This is just a guide as there are many other baits that would work but these would be my pickBream - Prawn, pilchard peices and tube wormWhiting - Live tube worms, cockle & squidsalmon trout - cockle, white bait and pilchard peicesSnapper - Pilchard, Tommy and squidHope this helps.

I have had success with whiting and even gar! on ecogear PX45F and rebel Pop-R's in the smaller size. these are two of the most popular and successful top water baits for whiting. Great spots to try are where tidal creek drain onto flats- the whiting school here and grab food draining out of creeks so are really switched on to grabbing floating prey. great fun!this one came on a px45:

I'd agree,in the shallows i find the fish skittish and think they prefer to grab a bait and run where out deep they are quite happy to sit there and have a chew.Sometimes i'll even pull off a bit of line by hand to get it started so they feel minimal resistance. This is pretty important off metro. cheers brenton

Thanks, but already knew how to cook them. Just didn't know whether to cook before freezing or freeze green. Here's a better way to cook. Remove the underbody shell whilst still green, clean, then put in rapidly boiling 'SEAWATER' (not fresh salted water), throw in about 1TBS sugar for every litre of water. Once in the boiling water (don't overcrowd as you want them to come back to boil pretty quickly, so use a real good high gas flame), put the lid on and once the water comes back to the boil again, count 2 minutes then remove them and immediately plunge into iced seawater.Delicious. As a Chef this is how I cooked them in 5 star restaurants. No point cooking them in their own crap, clean first is always better.Cheers Gary (you would think being a chef I would know how to freeze them, but as I said before I have never had the need till now)
