breambo25 got a reaction from Rickster in Has Strike&Hook caught you a fish?
Learned a load of stuff on this site. I reckon it's great. After hearing people talking about the use of unweighted baits, I decided to give it a bit of a go. The result? My first legal bream caught on pilchards!More recently, guys like rickster have helped me out and I now have a mully set up that I feel comfortable with.I love logging on and looking at the fantastic results many of our guys gave here on the site. I feel honoured to be a part of such a great group of guys.

In terms of rods, I would probably go for a Daiwa Saltiga G Boat rod. It looks pretty good and is made up of quality components. SAG70MHRS is the rod's code name. It is rated 15-30lb and it is a 7 ft rod with 7 guides so when a big fish tries to lunge underneath the boat, you can manouver it back out into the safety of the landing net. More details can be found at:http://www.daiwa.com/Rod/ However, if you are a shimano man the best option in my opinion would be a Jewel. Aesthetically, they look slick and they have the balls to handle pretty large fish like snapps and mullies. And for $100 on motackle, they're an absolute steal.http://www.shimanofish.com.au/publish/content/global_fish/en/au/index/products/rods/bait_fishing/jewel.htmlGood luck with it.

Hi BB25,I got a Pflueger beginners kit with a 5/6 rod, reel, backing, floating line, and leader included as well as a few fresh water flies. i have found this combo to be terrific, I have used it to learn to cast, and can now cast to an acceptable level, I haven't caught anything on it yet, but that is more my fault than the rod's. I use it in the salt as well as the fresh, but bought a different reel for the salt, so I can have the floating line on the fresh reel, and a sinking line on the salt reel (reels are cheap, I got mine for $19.90 at Fisherman's Paradise and it is a beautygood luck mate, fishing with the fly is great, adds another dimension to the hobby, I am just looking forward to landing my first fly caught fish!cheers,Scotty2

I think GOT ONE St Mary's may be able to help you. I think I even saw some cheapo rod eyes at BIG W the other day.

Good one there Nicko.Since the OP is fishing landbased I highly advise not to use circles whilst landbased. You will have to get your technique right when the fish takes your bait or you will lose that fish because there is a chance that the circle will not set if you get your technique wrong. And if your fishing free spool/baitrunner style, then circles are not ideal. Why stuff around getting that circle to set by slowly tightening the drag or whatever technique you employ. Don't take the chance.I use standard hooks and fish with a slightly tight drag just enough so when I do get a run I can reach my rod without it flying into the water. Remember a big mully will smash your bait like a freight train.Myself and Nickmav both use Gamakatsu 8/0s preferably but like others have said downsize to match your bait. You want it looking natural as possible. My chosen tackle is 30lb braided mainline and 60lb leader. Don't take any chances as it could be a really big fish :DCircles on the boat is different as most guys fish with tight drags and if your not then you should be.Hope it helps good luck man.

Rickster and a lot of the guys that have caught loads of mulloway will simply hook the live bait through the lip. This works Obviously :)I personally fish the way southie described it. I use snelled 6/0 Gamma gatsu hooks and if I'm low I will use some of my 8/0s since I haven't been snapper fishing for yonks. If there is heaps of tide ripping don't be afraid to use dead baits, they work fine when the waters moving well. I lost MY fish of a lifetime in I suspect a similar area to Rickster where some big mullies live and will think nothing about smashing a massive live squid or 30 odd cm salmon trout!!!! I was using sneeled 6/0s that day with 30lb sublime fluro and 20lb blackmagic mono..... The mainline went and I nearly snapped my rod over my knee Now I'm using my new 7ft 6-10kg platinum ugly stick with a 6000 shimano Sedona. 30lb spiderwire braid and 40lb sunline. I use the same 6/0 snelled rig about 1m trace and a ezy rig running sinker. It's actually very similar to how I fish for snapper. Oh and your question re circles??? I don't use em, but they work well and I'm probably stupid not too, snapper and mulloway have been caught next to me by mates using em but I just love to strike and it's pretty rare I don't fish with a rid in my hand.Of course most of my mulloway fishing does not end in a mulloway appearance though hahahaIf you guys camp out by westlakes in the warm weather with a live bait out, I'm sure you'll be back with some entertaining reports to make us jealous. Tight lines hey lads

They say that they are going to kill the same shark that did this?! Bull :c they will just see a great white and kill it anyway I reckon. How on earth would they go about finding this shark when it could be ages away from the area by now?

Hi BB, I did have one fun afternoon down there on fly a couple years ago and haven't been back for some reason. You just reminded me.This spot up from the walk bridge was good on an incoming tide, and the fish seemed to be coming in with the water.None were legal, but the bigger ones have to be close by I guess.Wading up to the knees, you could see 4 or 5 fish fighting to get the fly first and resulted in quite a few hookups. I just threw these two small flies on and they worked on the day.. Still have to try these worm imitations out down there, and holidays coming up soon so I might have to give it a go.. Good luck..

Hi Breambo, there was a nice site that use to give all the live weather info out at Henley beach but it's disappeared.Go to willy Weather and research the area you're keen on, eg tides, swell, wind etc. Click the weather link for say Brighton and in the box on the right with "real time" you'll see the Barometric pressure with an arrow pointing up or down.So as of 6-30pm the BP was 1027.3 hPa rising (arrow up).

If you're keen for some land-based squid get ready for the winter-spring seasonal change. In my eyes it is one of the best times to get 'em off metro and rural jetties.

Welcome to the site kenneth. I have had the same problem with squid before as well. I don't think there is any way of visibly seeing whether a squid/cuttlefish is pregnant without cutting it up unfortunately. Good to hear you were prepared to do the right thing though.
