Went use to dye our own too. Some colours worked better than others. Red was especially good. I've even dyed my worms and tommies loved the red ones.

We have been in the last couple of weeks doing a coloured gent that my father passed down to me back in the 70's and we have been inundated with the response and the results. Over the last 2 weeks we have sold 45 of the red gents and everyone raves about them. I will be doing a winter one as well which was passed down but a different colour. I am doing more of the red ATM and should be available tomorrow. Be patient as it is a long process.

    I think if I was paying membership to cover costs of restocking streams etc I'd be hesitant to allow just anybody to have a free lunch so to speak. Problem being with allowing just anybody and everybody fish these selective areas it would get crowded and overfished very quickly, and likely destroyed. Imagine what it would be like if you paid yearly membership and rolled up to find a crowd of people all splashing around in one spot , raping the stream/dam, leaving litter behind, leaving farm gates open, disturbing grazing stock, vandalism  etc etc etc because there were no restrictions or security in place. Most people would do the right thing I'm sure, but the redneck element is out there, we see it on a regular basis everywhere. Sadly in life it is, and always will be a minority who will spoil it for the majority....friggin' human nature. If I were a farmer/landholder I would not be happy having just anybody at any time trudging across my property, disturbing my privacy, no more so that I like sales persons, or religious peddlars crossing my yard knocking on my door. { Door to door peddlars of anything get a very hostile reception and abuse from me when they disturb my privacy }

Simple solution, become a member if you want to fish those special waters, or fish with the multitude in non restricted areas and take your chances, and likely be even more disappointed.

Yes it works in all types of water, this is the same one that's been sent to Africa & several other countries that struggle with polluted water....
Check this out it may give you some idea of it's usefulness.

I'm not one for carrying backpacks or drink bottles when river fishing as I like to fish as light as possible. This small item is an essential part of my river fishing.. it's called the Life Straw.

Here's what I carry with me at all times when trout fishing the rivers since suffering a severe stomach & bowel infection from drinking the water direct from the rivers here in Tassie..I finished up being on a special Government authorised script for two weeks. It's called a Life Straw and it's used in many countries around the world where the drinking water is polluted. It filters 99.99999% of bacteria etc out of the water as you suck the water up through it.. I've always drank the water straight out of the rivers when trout fishing until the day I became very ill. It hit me around 5 hours after getting home from the Leven River after a fishing session I had. I did as I normally did and that was to drink the water straight from the river not realising ( or even thinking) about the run off from the paddocks that had cattle in them. We had quite a bit of rain several days earlier and I didn't even give it a thought.. I do now and that's why I spent $28.00 on the Life Straw which I have used for nearly two trout seasons now. It can filter 1000 litres of water so it's will last me quite a few seasons yet..

    cheers

    TAT,

I think Rod is correct here. With no clear context people will wonder what your agenda is. So........ I can accept at the outset, that perhaps your initial approach was a little naive. However, having received all the responses above, to steadfastly maintain the position that people have jumped unnecessarily to conclusions is really naive. You are 'poking the bear' and are surprised when it bites you hand.

Your post has got a lot of hits for all the wrong reasons, but it's uncovered some latent wits, Pauline and Unicorns! Love it. She is/was also deluded.

For the sake of the intellectual and purely philosophical thoughts I assume your seeking I'll offer the following.

It's one of the few places I experience solitude, a rare commodity on a crowded earth, a time when I can reflect on what is really important in life, undistracted by someone trying to sell me something in a consumerist world.

It allows me to look at and appreciate nature at it's finest, dolphins, sea eagles, whales, sharks, fish and seabirds. The pastime influences the way I view the world.

When we fish, we are targetting table species. There is always a degree of bycatch that is inedible or undesirable. But they are thrown back. Some live and some die, usually from barotrauma. I don't like waste or unnecessary death, but I accept it as part of it. After filleting the fish we take, I always try and put the waste back in the water to become part of the food chain again. I foresee a future when some undesirables become table fare, travel to the mediterranean and you'll see that in action. A guy in an large Athen's fishmarket told me most of his fish was imported from New Zealand.

Any fish we keep are eaten and not wasted, unless my adolescent son unplugs the freezer to vacuum his car and doesn't turn it back on!!!!!!

With a little forethought and research of this website, you would have found lengthy discussions and 'conflict' of Rec's v Pro's v Govt v Greenies etc in the fishing fraternity. Personally I think the least damaging way to catch fish is with a line and hook and there are some Pro's that fish that way. The industrialisation of fishing is environmentally destructive in a way not possible by recreational fishers. An analogy...... farmer clears trees with an axe v Corporation uses bulldozers and fire to speed up the process and maximise profits.

Either way I'll be fishing till I can't get up or get it up.

Whilst we're on philosophy. What about this once proud country becoming a nanny state. Rules and more rules pervading our society to extent that we need signs everywhere we go preventing us from imminent danger. How is that affecting the human gene pool buy robbing morons of their god given right to go kill themselves, sometimes after saying "hey watch this"????

    What are your thoughts?

We do feel defensive about our hobby not because we are struggling with the moral dilemma of killing a worm to catch a fish, but more so because our hobby is under attack from all sides none of which would be necessary if there were more like-minded people like us who love and enjoy protecting and being out in the environment.
I feel that(and i may be wrong)that if you spent more time at Uni discussing the real issues with your hairy unwashed colleagues instead of trying to entice a bunch of innocent fisho's into a mass debate that was doomed from the start you might of gained more of a feeling of superiority and intellect that you obviously crave.
    cheers b

So if you did a bit of research on the website prior to asking a question that people (majority fisher people on the website, since its a fishing forum), you would have learnt that you introduce yourself first, tell us a bit about yourself, where your interest lies, then ask the question.

It's like a being an atheist and a Jehovah coming to your door preaching.
You're going to get 1 of 4 things happen
1-A door slammed in your face
2-You're ears bitten right off and being told to get stuffed
3-Depending on the person that opens the door, you may not be able to walk to the gate that you came in from or
4-Perhaps 1-5% will actually listen to what you have to say cos they were doing nothing at home

Did i just put my philosophizing hat on there?
I might have to reconsider going to uni if they are giving away degrees!!

I'm feeling philosophical so i might just answer part of your question.

In life, you tend to do things that you enjoy or like doing.
I like fishing, so i go fishing
I like watching and playing sport, so i watch and play sport.

I don't like watching boxing, but i like UFC
I don't like watching golf, but i'll play golf with mates.
I don't like any of the CSI / law and order bulls**t shows, as i believe they teach or provide the clues on how to kill / murder others, so i don't watch it.

Everything in life is a choice.
Why did you choose philosophy as a degree and not marine biology?
    Its a choice.

I choose to go fishing because instead of buying fish from a market or shop (and only god knows where the hell they buy it from or how long its stayed in the shop for), i go catch myself a feed and spend quality time with my dad on the water relaxing and listening to the ocean....

    You get the drift.........

    G'day
I've seen 'first posts' a few times on fishing forums that contain agenda based questions by radical greenies.  You know, the kind that scream "murderers" to a man and his son fishing off a warf.  I suspect others have seen this type of thing.   With no context or introduction in your original post you got what should be expected in the responses.  ie a mixture due to confusion about the context of the question and people wondering what is your agenda.  Otherwise you would have got more "sincere responses" I suspect
    Cheers
    Rod

This is how I justify it. From a young boy my parents have had a holiday house on the Yorke Peninsula, they purchased the place as a result of them enjoying the life style that a quiet coastal towns offers.   I grew up in the dessert on the Nullarbor plain in South Australia and as a family we would visit our holiday house on the Yorke Peninsula during holiday periods.  During this time as a family we would participate in the hobby of fishing.  This activity would provide us with food as well as an activity that we could all participate in and enjoy as a family.  The rural town that our holiday house is in is a town that people who share similar interest congregate.  One of these interest is fishing, when I say fishing I mean the hobby that provides the participant with an adventure, social interaction, stimulation, a learning experience and a source of food, not the destructive, ruthless, activity that people like you try and promote.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that fishing is a lot more to us then putting a hook in a fishes mouth. Take this forum for example, its a place that like minded guys can sit and have a chat, talk about things not just fishing related, make friends etc.

If people like yourself really want to make a difference channel your energy to topics that are really causing a detrimental affect on society. Drug addiction, peoples heath, child abuse, theft, jobs.
