jackblack86 reacted to Cal in got crabs?
Thats the way to go I reckon. Most surf Mullies i"ve caught or seen gutted have had sand crabs in their stomachs as well....its funny how you never hear anyone using them.probably because if you spend 500 bucks on fuel ect to go away for a couple of days to YP, Salts ect its a bit hard to gamble on trying something your not sure will work.Maybe if things are quiet and there are a few crabs about throw one out on a second rod.I"m sure that sand crabs make up a large part of Mulloway,Gummys diet, even to the point that they are one of the main reasons these species come in to the surf gutters to feed. -

jackblack86 reacted to Luke5600 in bait storage
Best thing I can think of is to do the age old trick. Don't like the smell of something? put a stronger smell in there.Try resting your baits in straight fish oil in the freezer for a day (or longer if time permits) and let the oil really soak into the bait, They will probably still have a slight smell from the scent of the bags but the fish oil should cover over it mostly.Even if you find you can't get the bigger (and wiser) fish to bite on it cutting strips off and soaking it in more oil would work for most bait fish out there in a school. Tommies, mullet, shitties and garfish should all fall too easy prey even if it does have a slightly unusual scent too it underwater. You'll find bringing your baits out (even soaking other baits in that havent been scented) of the fish oil will actually produce a small oil slick at the spot directly where you cast, and if the oil has enough time to penetrate the mouth/stomach when a fish does bite it will have a slight scent release giving the fish more incentive to actually finish up with the bite its taken rather then just mouthing it to see if its okay. I used to soak all my baits in fish oil when I was out snapper fishing on the rocks and found it produced better results then one I hadn't soaked (had a 2 hook rig on for ruggers, 1 tommie scented and 1 unscented roughly 4 in 5 snapper bit on the scented tommie)

jackblack86 got a reaction from Keen2Learn in more random 'stupid' questions
Keen2 -As everyone else has said, just stick to off the shelf gear, there is plenty on the market available. Highly suggest having a feel of the rod and reel together. It will need to be weighted for your style - you'll know/feel when the combination is good for you. Do your research on the product - even ask around on here, there are some superb tech heads around!

This is what I've got at home, built it myself on a wall in the shed. Basically just shelf inserts mounted on a wall at the correct lengths of your rods.

jackblack86 got a reaction from Keen2Learn in stupid questions about bearings? overhead rods? berley? bibs?
Plankton has coveredthe majority of it....When looking at a rod take note of the section where you mount the reel, that'll be a dead giveaway for which type of rod it is
