13.4 kg red emporer is one that sticks out!

14ft hammer head shark was a bit of fun for a while. skipper didn't want me to bring it on board but with a bit of help up she came.

    hooked a whale once,

but when I was young hooked something massive, crystal clear water and about 20m to go 3 big sharks start to circle my rankin cod.
    BANG damn sharks!
got the head and only a little bit of body and it weighed 14.4kg! imagine what it would be for a whole fish!

these were all caught in coral bay WA when I used to work on charter boats and commercial fishing boats.

more recently and in SA 5.8kg salmon from locks well on duel adagio lure.
49.5cm king george. I'll crack the 50cm soon hopefully!
    first ever mulloway - 82cm

    lines tight!

My most memorable catch would be my first Murray Cod.
I was 18 and fishing with some mates at Blanchetown, doing an overnighter, which was ironic as after a few drinks everyone started crashing out in their cars or tents by about midnight.
By about 2am I was getting sleepy, but I was still catching carp on worms and callop on shrimp, as well as heaps of yabbies from the nets in a nearby backwater.
I decided to pin a small yabby through the tail and cast it out, then sat down to enjoy my last beer.
Next thing I know, the rod was bending over slowly, then suddenly going ape5hit in the rod holder.
I grabbed it, backed off the drag, and let it run, slowly trying to regain line when I could. It didn't fight like a carp, and the headshakes were different to the callop I had been catching.
After about 10 minutes of gentle coaxing, I got the fish near the bank, then realized the landing net was still leaning against the car where I left it 30m away.
I grabbed my dolphin torch which I then shone into the water to see a big mouth and a greyish patterned back which I knew straight away was a Cod, and I didn't hesitate to go into the water to get it, even though it was cold.
It wasn't a huge Cod by any means, but at a guess I would have said 55-60cm.
I then spent the next ten minutes trying to wake my mates up to see if anyone had a camera, back then we didn't have mobile phones yet, let alone phones with cameras.
The Cod had been out of the water for way too long, and I had to get back into the water and hold it upright, while trying to shine the torch on it.
It took about 5 minutes to get it happy again, but when I released it, it didn't dart off, but slowly and gracefully swished her tail and cruised back to the depths.
I stayed up the rest of the night throwing yabby baits out, but getting another Cod just wasn't to be.
Murray Cod to me has always been my favourite fish, and the night I caught my first will always be one of my best fishing memories.

I don't know the ins and out of actions etc. But I do own the older Nabura 67, matched perfectly to a Certate 3000, 20LB braid. Its my local Snapper rod, mainly bait, no worries with smallish baits and 4oz's.
Handled fish to 9kg nicely and great fun.
Also dropped plastics on top of a school of 10-12kg BFT, again, great fun, and a challenge, did get busted off a few times tho
Salmon to 4kg throwing slugs at a school from the boat aswell.
Id say a 4000 FJ would be a bit heavy on it tho.
Did I say I love it?

S**t yeah, tho ive only dicked around and caught doggies & banjos, around Corney Pt & just west of Turton. All similar 'looking' areas tho.... tidal sandy shallows out to the weed line.

Rays love cruising those tidal flats esp once its dark on a high tide.

From a quick reccie at Hardwicke at low tide once, there are plenty of shallow gutter systems channeling into the shore

    Hot tip would be:
Suss out a nice looking gutter/hole etc at low tide Wade out to your chosen spot on the rising tide around dusk with an onion bag with some frozen burley blocks (decent sized ones so they dont melt too fast), anchor with a brick and attach a float with a glow stick. Then you know where to cast once its dark! Chuck out the big rod for rays (have some wire trace options for any toothy ones) stick it in your holder, sit back and drink beer (or whatever's your poison). No need to cast it to the moon either, just near that glow stick. 2nd light rod to target smaller stuff (KGs will come in here and get big that time of year) while you wait for the big rod to go off. It will! Fingers crossed sea lice arnt around. Demolish bait in 10-15mins. Pick up your burley stuff the next morning.
Did the above burley (i think 2-3 2lt blocks of mixed goodness) idea chasing mullet one May, just west of Turton towards Pt Souter. Mullet came in around dusk and were thick, getting a fish a cast. As it became dark the rays came in. Heaps of them!

Had a bunch of big smoothies going spastic over the burley bag, smashing out of the water  & all sorts of smaller rays. Became impossible to catch mullet as they were too excited and took anything, even the tiniest bit of cockle on a #8 baitholder!

at one point of Hardwicke there is a flat rock section, that makes a good platform to fish off at low tide. Chuck some squid jags around and get some tommies with some burley.

I did find that side of the peninsula to be pretty average landbased TBH, tho had a kingie take a hooked tommie at the Turton jetty.

And dont overlook Hardwicke Bay itself. It might look rather flat & featureless, there be rays in those shallows if that's your thing. Anywhere where there's a bit of a hole or gutter will do.

Get a nice high tide after dusk, chuck the bait out, rod in holder & sit down in the deck chair, few beers. Right in front of the shack too!

Each to their own but id rather be doing that than rooting 'round on the Turton jetty and having to drive back. Turton Tavern's pretty good tho.

I have also been bitten off 3 times in a row right in front of the Corney Pt boat ramp one june night, wading in the shallows after a big blow. Seems the sharks must have followed the big winter KGs in close to shore, was barley above knee deep.

Yer that's still a fair old drive... I remember reading about a place near Cape Elizabeth think it might be the 'shed' or something, have a look through the old threads might be able to find it. Not sure if it's accessible without a 4wd and if its better fishin off the boat there but might be worth having a read thru the old stuff

Recommend Berry Bay, beautiful beach. Caught some of the biggest tommies I've ever seen there on 40g metals along with STs

Browns should be your first option man I've been three times in last few months and smashed them everytime

Nice to fish different places and that but it's a fairly sure bet for me atm, fish past the lagoon start casting from the first breakers after it. Been lucky with the swell everytime it's been flat as so mayb that helps there

Rocks pretty well from Corny Pt thru to Pt Annie. Have a bit of a reccie if you've the time & find a nice platform with some depth.
Funnily enough generally caught more impressive drummer and only small sweep thru here.

Corny point - rock, nice holes west from the lighthouse
Berry Bay - beach, rocks north & south. I like the rocks to the Sth more, depends on swell.
Point Annie - beach & rocks (can be a nice little gutter up against the rocks directly south of the pt)
Dust Hole - long surf beach, good walk  & cast option.

Berry & Dust Hole can hold some good gutters, DH usually better as it's a higher energy beach but longer steps down to beach! Both much closer to Hardwicke than Browns.

Gleesons is 4wd unless you're up for a bit of a walk (dirt but 2wd-able untill you need to cut thru the dunes). Some deep sand thru the dunes & along the beach side. Much more energy & beach structure towards the northern end. Never fished it, was a reccie mission when nothing was on the chew.

Really need to know what flavours Kman, dont want to go through a whole packet of lollies to find the right one.

Not a weird bait but we used to catch tommies on bare hooks, probably as they shone like a little lure.

    Hey guys,

As some of you on here may know, a few of us from this forum just came back from a 3 day live aboard charter with Absolute Fishing Charters.  We all had an amazing time with loads of fish caught.  In the near future we will post a detailed report with more videos and pics, but in the meantime here's a vid I've put together from some of the action from the second day where 42 Samson fish were brought on board (and released) with at least 10 bust offs amongst us.

Enjoy...... oh, and one last thing, apologies up front because the "F-bomb" gets dropped a few times throughout the video  .... however I'm sure you can appreciate we were all pretty excited on the day hooking onto these hard pulling monster!
