My kayak is simply turned upside down with equal nose and tail overhang at each end. Haven't had a problem with my 9fter tied down with two ratchet straps going 110 along the freeway.

If you're after a secondary support or similar, have a look at Rhino Racks or Rolla branded ones.

newtontoney reacted to plankton in suitable braid for overhead reel lure flicking
I have used braid on overheads for years, not as much since moving here, but heaps back in the US.

You mention flicking around 60g metal slugs, I assume for salmon? Beach or boat?

20-30lb would work well, depends on the size reel and it's capacity, but 30 certainly wouldn't be too heavy. On a 6500 Abu I have generally used 50lb for similar work.

For overheads I prefer a true braid, not a fused line like Fireline. I have had good experiences with Cortland, Power Pro and Jerry Brown.

I was inspired by a recent episode of River Cottage, where Hugh made a cerviche with bull mullet.

Thinking salmon was going to be relatively easy for me to come by and similarly oily, decided to give something different a go. A current oversupply of lemons & limes was helpful too.

    Here goes:

ST fillets - skinned, de-boned, bloody bits removed and chopped in 3cm or so chunks (mine were from 6 x 35-40cm fish) 1 tsp each minced garlic & ginger handful fresh coriander, roughly chopped fresh chilli to taste, finely chopped lemon/limes freshly juiced
Mix all together in a pyrex dish and juice enough lemon/limes to just cover the fish. Cover and refridgerate for 3 hours.  Remove and eat.

The fish is 'cooked' by the juice and changes colour as if its been cooked conventionally.

Pretty simple and tasty. Not overly sour as the ST flavour holds its own. Mine needed more chilli!

Alas does say "summer & pilsner" to me.

newtontoney reacted to projoe in Rods that are overhead and spin ?
Silstar powertip rods have/had a couple of rods in the range that could be used for spin or overhead the only factor stopping some rod blanks being used for both types of reels would be the taper ie slow taper blanks are not ideal for overhead use.
you would still need a larger stripping guide for the spin reel application but in saying that because the rod needs more smaller guides to supplement the overhead (to reduce or stop line touching the blank) would reduce its effective casting range when the spinning reel was used on the rod.
I personally prefer a rod built  correctly for 1 style of reel to utilize the effectiveness of the blank & I guess to answer your question no building a rod for both style of reels on 1 blank would not harm the blank.

    Hi Newtontoney,

I have an Avet SX MC which I have had for a few years, and is a very nice reel. Early on I pulled the reel down, greased the carbon drag with Cal's grease, and filled all the bearings with marine grease, with the exception of the spool bearings, in which I used a drop of Corrosion X. The manufacturer's drag ratings are spot on, and a full set of spare bearings is available from the manufacturer (USA) for around $60 plus postage.

Not a reel I would dunk in the surf but very well made and very tough. They can bring in line like a winch when you need to

I've been using fireline off the beach for quite a while now and have found it alot better compared to mono, stick a simple fluorocarbon leader on the end and theres no trouble with sand abrasion or anything similar.

With your set up you could probably drop down to 20lb braid though, plenty strong enough to handle most fish you'd hook and you'd have more on the spool for anything big that did come along

newtontoney reacted to Luke5600 in light for night fishing
For the head torch I use one of these, its a cheap rechargeable headlight bright enough for anything you need doesn't cost you anything in batteries and at 15 dollars a pop doesn't matter if you lose one or it breaks, I've had mine for about 2 years now and hasn't been faulty or anything.
    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rechargable-Led-head-lamp-15-led-bulb-/300648533769?pt=AU_Accessories_Tackle&hash=item46000c8f09&_uhb=1

As far as if you want light the entire night buy yourself a rechargeable lantern or a camping lantern, to stop it from scaring the fish off place your lantern against a bag or a bucket to stop the globe from shining directly on the water only having it face back towards the shore provides enough light behind your gear for you to see and when you go infront just switch the headlamp on with it facing towards the ground.

Avoid lights shining directly on the water as it will scare the fish, a bit of light coming from the shore as mentioned with having the lantern behind something so it doesn't shine directly doesn't bother them. its true about lights attracting baitfish and squid but a constantly moving light or one that flashes on and off will tend to scare them more then attract them.

if you want a light for seeing if you get a bite or not your best bet would be either of these

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-rod-tip-clip-on-strobe-light-smart-fish-bite-alert-/290633135778?pt=AU_Accessories_Tackle&hash=item43ab15b6a2&_uhb=1
These are clip on lights that can attach to pretty much every rod, its able to tell between the pulling actions of waves or wind and proper bites quite well. Flashes green intermittently when everything is normal and flashes red quite fast when you get a bite to attract your attention. I've had a set for well over a year as well and left them on the rod overnight by accident and still haven't had to change the batteries on them

    http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-10-X-LED-Light-Twin-Bells-Clip-On-Night-Fishing-Rod-Bite-Alarm-/160966798206?pt=AU_Accessories_Tackle&hash=item257a5e6b7e&_uhb=1

This is the other end of the scale which is just a clip on bell which sounds as the rod moves, would be good with the water was calm and little wind but would provide a much clearer indication of a bite if you weren't actively watching your rod (I.e sending a text or having a drink)
I personally use both but find I much prefer the first bite indicator as it provides a better indication of whether or not its a bite or just wind/tide drag

Light does attract baitfish and predatory fish take advantage of artificially lit areas because they know there will be baitfish there. Fishing around bridges and jetties can be great as larger predatory fish hide in the shadows and ambush the baitfish congregating under the light. The problem comes when you accidently light up an area where predators aren't expecting it and you scare them away.

I've found that you can actually see a great deal at night without the aid of any light, and if light is needed then a low red light is usually sufficient. If you do use a bright white light then it can take several minutes to develop decent vision again, and if you need to do something in that time then you have to turn the light on again. The more unexpected light you introduce the greater chance you will spook fish and put them off the bite. So why take the chance when you don't really need to?

Just my experience, other people can do whatever they like, but please don't come fish near me and shine a bunch of unneccesary light on the water.

Agree with Plankton, i dont mind sitting in the dark. Although i thought light could attract baitfish in too?

Certianly want one you can dial the light output right down so its not too detrimental to your night vision.

Red light is great. The only one i use is a spotlight for other outdoor pursuits so proabbly not what youre after but its an actual red light LED not white with a filter.

I just use a headtorch on low power for baiting, rigging ect and then sit in the dark. Usually falling asleep.

A red LED area light would be ideal. Just the issue of finding one thats any good with a market saturated with imported s**t.

Also, blood looks awesome under a red light, comes out black as!

Be careful, too much light on the beach will scare away the fish. Also, everytime you turn on a white light it ruins your night vision.

I use a very basic headlamp that uses two red LEDs or three white ones. For most fishing applications like rebaiting, tieing knots, unhooking fish, etc. the red light is more than ample and doesn't affect my vision when I shut it off. If I need more light, especially away from the water, like walking off the beach, I use the white light.

I see so many people on the beach with their area lit up like a city, and they wonder why they're not catching any fish.

Check this thing out; a friend I used to fish with had one for when we went sharking and it is wicked.  The paddles can be taken off and used as individual torches and then when you click them back onto the main lantern they recharge.  Gives off plenty of light too.

I have an original 5120 overhead too mate...sanded blank just like yours....I have 1 in spin also...great rods... I was just curious as to what people thought/comparisons to the new snyders by Wilson.

I ended up getting a 7153... chris_64... I wanted a large fiberglass surf rod for sharks and mullies (if im lucky) in summer...for lobbing out dirty chunks of bait/big livies

I thought about getting my 5120's extended but decided to keep them as is, as they are wicked as is.

i paid 210 for it...I felt it was worth it....Wilson and Snyder are both quality in my opinion.

They do look similar to the originals, and I actually contacted Wilson out of curiosity, who said they are making them as closely as they can to the original specs.

    Hi toney,

I recently bought a  Regal 7177 / 2  and am very impressed with it. Still made in Aust according to BCF website..
Never had one of the old rods to compare it to but this thing seems nicely made and effortlessly casts
an absolute mile.  [diawa windcast with 30lb sufix mono]
If it's one of these 7177's you're looking at I don't think you would be disappointed.
The only downside was the price. I was ruminating over it for months hoping for a sale
but eventually paid the $279 retail. A lot of money for a peasant like I'm.
BCF at Mt Barker have/ had   a 7177 / 2  piece with a broken top eye marked down to about 240. [just the eye, glass was ok]
If thats the model you want and do a bit of binding etc maybe you can beat them down some more.
If you want to see how you like casting one contact me and I can meet you somewhere so you can try it b4
you fork out all those fins.

    Cheers

newtontoney reacted to Cal in What do you use for mullet bait?
1..Coarse beef mince stiffened up with semolina and a sprinkling of curry powder,a tip with this is make it up the day before and leave it in the fridge UNCOVERED  overnight, this dries it out and stiffens it up even more.
2..Finely  Diced kangaroo meat, you get it from the refrigerated pet food section of supermarkets, get it out its packaging  and also sprinkle a good dose of curry powder over it.
These fine pieces hold well on a small hook and are excellent.
3...The no 1 bait for mullet is seaweed worms, they go nuts for them,if you can obtain them its well worth the effort.
Any of these baits on a paternosta  rig with a burley spring loaded with  chicken pellets soaked and mashed to a stiff consistency, laced with a bit of tuna oil and you cant go too far wrong.
    cheers
