I just wanted to add this awesome photo of my little rig after a good day's cray diving! She may not be one of these new hunks of aluminium, but she's built as strong as anything...She may not be new but for a 60-70 year old she is one in a million. The 40 year old motor doesn't want to give in yet, its just a testament to a well maintained rig, you take care of her and she'll keep on going... Someones love affair with their boat is unmeasurable, even if you need to put your dive mask back on when the wind picks up!

If it ain't broke, don't fix it. If you are catching fish with the rods you have now why change? I know it's all part of the ever changing dynamic of the entire sport but if you see some of these older blokes on jetties pulling in fish after fish you might be swayed to this conservative thinking. I would much rather take info from the past generation of fishos than taking it from paul bloody worsteling. Hey these telescopic rods might be the future, but until there is sufficient evidence to support them, I will stick with my 6'6' graphite.

Seals are bloody fun to swim with. We rafted up our boats at althorpes a couple summers ago to cook up some fresh caught cray and other random fish found around the area. Anyway they were playing around at the back of our boat so a few of us jumped in and they were really playful, swim around come up, swim around then sometimes they would swim belly up in front of us and we would rub their belly. It was a real great experience. Probably not a smart thing to do about 100m from Shark alley but I've dived through it, still here, but it was really dark and creepy in there. As for sharking this summer, you can find my little 4m craft on the section bank or naval grounds on any given good day out there!

CallopHunter got a reaction from 4THALOVE in What is the reasoning behind Split Grips ?
I find that the short rod length gives the angler far more control when using lures and such. But as for the split grip, when I am bait fishing I like to keep a hand behind the reel and one thumbing the line so I reckon it's just a cosmetic thing... my 2c worth anyway!

This thread has gone a bit quiet of late so I might just chuck up a little report from yesterday. On monday I armed to savage 4m with all the correct equipment to have a good day out on whatever happens to appear. Without a gps or sounder it is good ol' fishin' at its best. So tuesday morning comes, 0530 hours, screw that I 'm going back to sleep. 0700 hours, that a bit better. Anyway crab bait in and off we go to Nth Haven. And as you would expect with a 40 yo motor it got going, someone forgot to put the choke back in :silly: ...woops...flooded motor. Well 15min later and 2 very sore blisters I got her started and off we go! Trolled hb's for a while out the front of the academy to not avail. So chucked jags on and made our way to some decent drifting area, picked up 4 squid in a couple drifts and decided to motor off to semi reef, but as we have no gps I had to rely on my ability to line up a couple of landmarks from my dad's book of recognised ground's landmark alignments. So did that, no crabs, not whiting...back to the drift grounds, picked up a couple puffa's and a squiddly who decided to p*** me off to no end by following my jag for the entire drift before engulfing it over some very sandy area. 12 o'clock head back in, couple vietnamese rolls from the haven bakery and a good clean up! Nice day out there and a good warm up for what will be a cracker summer solo hitting up the metro coast. Keep and eye out for someone struggling to start their crank motor on grounds such as bower rd, semi reef, naval, channel and the section bank! Say Hi!

Heard the bake-fish are common, also the blazed snapper, watch out for smokin sharks coz they will turn your catch into half-baked fish. They have some nice smokers over there so another great method for preparing your fish!

HA! We call them rodney's, get a heap of them off Althorpes. 10/10 do not want to eat. And they can get baratrauma in shallow water, once saw one on the surface with an inflated swim bladder then a gull came through and popped him! Nature...
