Went into my local tackle store with this same mission in mind & purchased a 9ft Daiwa Air Edge 1 - 4kg at a reasonable $120.  I'll be hanging a Daiwa Aird 2000 off it wrapped with 6lb Samaki extreme PE. Looking fwd to put it through it's paces the next settled spell we get.

You can analyse this one til the cows come home.......

Neverthless you'd need to conder what base/bases you desire to cover with the particular outfit; LB, lure, bait ect.

I do nearly all of my flattie & yfw wading so go for 6.6/7ft stuff. As others have suggested, longer for pure LB would be much better.

I have a 1-4kg Jewel with an old Sienna 2500. Recently striped and lubed, still going strong. It has landed plenty of yfw on bait, tommies & st on lure and a few flatties on sp & pillies.

Generlly dont get out much and prefer to fish occasionally, choosing amenable conditions to use my 1-3kg Fireblade & Symetre 1000 for extra fun!

I noticed this a few weeks ago, I took half a dozen home from semaphore off the jetty...

4 of them had no significant smell, and 2 were rank. They went straight in the freezer bag for squid teasers

Most of my gear is at the cheaper end of the market and 75% of my fishing is landbased targeting the species you've listed, and a few others. The two lighter setups I use are Shimano Bream Dynamix 2-4kg with a Shimano Sedona 1500, and a Berkley Venom Death Adder 2-4kg with a Shimano Sienna 1000. I rate both of these rods, and the reels are more than capable of coping with the fish you've listed. I'm not sure if you can still get the Bream Dynamix (R&As). I picked up the Death Adder second hand from a site member and would highly recommend it.

There really isn't any small reel that is going to cope with being dunked and not serviced afterwards. In my experience the mid level Shimano stuff like Siennas and Symetres (my favourite) are better value than simarly priced Daiwas.

One trick I've used for a long time is filling the entire body of spinning reels with boat trailer wheel bearing grease. If the reel does take a dunk it doesn't allow much water in and sand almost never gets in. If the reel stays under water for more than a few moments you will still need to strip it down and give it a clean, but for splashes and quick dunks it works well.

After a minor dunking a good rinse with fresh water on your garden hose's mist setting is a good idea. Even better is using a product like Salt Away mixed with water in a spray bottle.

As far as rods, for chasing YFW with bait I love my Dynamix Estuary rod from Ray and Annes. For working lures and squid jigs I like a more fast action rod like a Daiwa Seabass.

nok   - I most certainly did not insinuate that anyone was trying to mislead, read again what I wrote.   - How did you get "dubious" out of "technically correct based on" ?   - Your statement "no re-adjusted harvest weight for the recreational snapper catch in 2000/2001 was calculated in that report. You "chose" to determine that value (153 tonnes), based on assumptions, which apparently are incorrect." and the rest of your post dealing with that was exactly my point in my previous post. ie my "assumptions" are based on trying to make sense of an anomaly whereby the average weight for a (rec) caught fish "fell" from 3.6 (3.2?) kg, in 8 years, to 1.8 kg.   I am missing something here...from the 2007/08 RFS   p57 - the overview explanation in relation to the re-analysis   p64 - 2000/01 figures   p39 - 1.82 kg mean live weight   Finally, I did state
...which means that effectively one of three things is applicable to this whole construct;   - the 00/01 catch tonnage is incorrect because the average fish weight was grossly overestimated OR - the 07/08 live mean weight is incorrect because 1.82 kg is too low OR - the average snapper weight, as caught by recs, reduced by 50% over 8 years.   So, to justify your position in terms of your scathing response to my last post - which one of the three is it? If the last option can be categorically verified, then I stand corrected.

I have a Trion 2-4kg and a 2500 excellor i use.... But i only use cheap stuff for YFW as i usually wade out to the sand bar and fish both sides of it and it always gets a good dunking lol

Can i suggest if your are fishing primarily landbased investing in a loner rod? say around the 7'6-8ft mark.... Better casting soft tip for feeling bites etc....

daiwa air edge do a 7'6 1-3kg, also daiwa seabass do an 8ft 1-3 kg rod... certainly a nice rod and good price tooo

Nothing beats rolling out of bed at the beach grabbing a couple of fresh whiting, Tommy or whatever it is you desire fillets from the fridge and cooking them up with a simple coating for breakfast.

I like to use Tandaco coating mix as its a simple effective way to coat fish with minimal mess and fuss. Once the fish has been fried place it between to pieces of fresh white bread, drizzle with lemon and enjoy.

This is how i did my last couple of batches of squid from the freezer, salt & pepper style.
4-5 squid tubes (mid 20cm+) 250 g cornflour 1tbls pepper corns 1tsp salt 1 tsp each garlic, ginger & chilli powders 3 egg whites oil for frying, i used sunflower. newspaper & paper towel. Thoroughly clean squid & slice tubes into rings. Lay rings out to dry on newspaper & paper towel.
Grind pepper and salt. Mix into flour with remaining spices in a bowl.
Beat eggwhites in a small bowl.
Toss rings in flour mix, dip in egg white and finish off with flour again.
Batch deep fry in hot oil 180-190deg for no more than a min. Test temp with a bit of squid or bread.
Serve straight away with sweet chilli sauce or whatever takes yout fancy.

This time i used the bbq 'casue the deepfryier was hadnt been cleaned from a few times ago. I think it was called a 'roasting dish' or something along those lines?

I usually use squid once frozen for a while as i find it easier to skin and a little more tender. I gut, remove wings prior to freezing whole tubes.
Tenticles are ok but make better bait than grub.
Wings are a pain in the a**e as they are inconsistent thickness to cook. Last time one rolled up and spat hot oil on my eyelid. This time i ditched the wings and wore my polycarbonate faceshield!

Hi all, thought I would share with you my Salt and Pepper Recipe I use. It's reasonable quick and easy but I know two of the most fussiest eaters and they both love it!!I don't do anything fancy with my squid, like soak it in anything for a day. These squid were caught a few hours earlier and basically cleaned then cooked. Ingredients: Squid Lemon pepper, I will explain portioning later. Salt Flour ( I believe, if you are gluten intolerant, you can use corn flour?) Milk Oil for cooking, I used rice bran.I prefer to open up my squid and then cut it into strips rather then make rings, I see no problem with making it into rings if you are that way inclined but I don't know if you would get the same texture. There is a sort of soft side of the squid, the inside I assume, find that side. Once you have, score lines into it, from side to side on a 45 degree angle from the top. The goal is to cut 1 cm boces into it, which should hopefully look something like this. Note, Don't cut through the squid, only want to score one side. Mixing the actual coating, in this example I had about 2 cups of flour, roughly 2-3 tablespoons of LP and I also add a little extra salt and this was for 6 smallish squid . How I check if it is enough is by smelling the mixture, the mixture will give off a really lemony smell, that's when I know I have a good amount. This photo shows how I have scored and cut the squid into about an inch wide strips. Chuck the strips into a container of milk, make sure to cover them well so the mixture sticks to it. Once they are "milked" roll them in the mixture thoroughly, making sure to cover all of the squid. I really recommend trying just one to begin with to make sure everything is right, if you own a deep fryer, that will make it alto easier but if not and cooking on a stove top with a saucepan like this, it's important to get it the right temp range. Trying to evenly space the squid, throw it in, it literally takes 30 - 45 seconds to cook, again cook one, take it out and try it. I usually know when it is done by the colour, but that isn't always right. Also this is the sort of consistency you want on the squid. Once they're are all cooked, time to eat. Goes great with some Aioli and a minimum chips from up the local. Enjoy and let me know how it goes and any feed back you have :D

Hey guys haven't posted for a few years, So I thought id chuck up a short post for yas! Recently went to pt Augusta for the first time chasing kings! We went for 4 days. We fished ridiculously hard for the first 2 days without any luck. Word of mouth was No one else had any luck either! So our third day out was a really early start (like every other day) so we were on the water before sun up n had some squid in the bag early! Off to find the fish!
So we ended up doing a bit of down rigging for an hour or so without any luck! Then we seen some good signs. So I started casting my new outfit around which is a saltiga5000 with my saltiga blue-backer 77s, I was hammering a popper around for a solid half hour to an hour till I started to get sore n was talking to my mate, all of a sudden boof! A kingy nailed my popper out of the water and it had my attention! I blooped it once more n paused n the king came n inhaled it! After a short but solid fight I had my first king in the boat! She weighed 17kg n went 124cm! Nothing else for the rest of the trip but both me n my mate were stoked we got a fish!

Nice to chat to you Zorgs, sorry we didn't let a few more through mate.

The pool net was OK, but the extendable inner tube has nothing to stop it falling out apart from pressure/ bend in the pole, so had to let the wider ones go to save losing the net end! Was our first time too and will definitely be up for it next year. Hope you ended up with a few.

Some crazy cats out there in their boats, some lit up like Xmas trees and others with a torch and no other lights at all! Nearly had the older couple on the rocks with us at one point!

Hey pirate, I was the guy that turned up a bit later and was picking up the suckers you missed just to your left. I saw the pool net and was thinking that was a much better idea. Nice and light and lets the water through a bit better, I'd stick to that. Was my first time out and tried at the yacht squadron boat ramp and surrounding rocks but nothing was happening so shifted to OH. Feeling crook as a dog with a dodgy cold which explained my slipping and sliding on the rocks but I'd been building myself up for this so wasn't going to miss it. My wife thinks it's amusing a grown man wants to catch worms....... Like mentioned it was slow going but once the boats cruised past the length of the banks it was almost all over. I was probably picking up one every 10-15 minutes at that stage. I walked a little further down the breakwater but it wasn't much better so called it a night.

Now I know someone from Strike Hook but only by the size of his pole.

G'day all. Haven't contributed much lately due to a serious lack of fishing.

But I have been following this thread and after missing the last 2 runs I was keen to have a go last night. Met up with Vxman in the OH car park by the platform about 8.30pm. The lads on the platform said it had been very slow, but they were just starting to get a few. So we found a decent spot on the rocks and had the torches illuminating the surrounding water for anything that looked wormy! It was slow, but we were picking up a few here and there and having a bit of a laugh as I tried to perfect the technique without losing my very dodgey pool net and/or fall in. Had a slow but steady flow for about an hour, but after that they really slowed down so we gave it up about 10.30pm. Probably would've picked up a few more, but there was a flotilla of small boats scooping like crazy just up river from where we were. Honed the netting skills so well I managed to scoop up a little Occy that was cruising around!

We had beautiful conditions last night and it was a great way to spend a couple of hours, learnt a few things for next time and got a couple sessions worth of bait so all good!
