bjorn2fish 4,612
Definitely going to hit the salmon seriously this year as I haven't hit them at all before  I've heard salmon will take pretty much any metal slug so will probably go through a few of those but...Just wondering what everyone's favourite go to lure is. Brand, style etc etcCheers
Ugly4Life 41
Definitely and without a doubt my favourite lure for the past year or so has been the Daiwa Double Clutch. These are absolute Salmon killers and also work very well on the Snook. The colours I go for are the Phantom and the Blue Smelt. Alexsfishin1, bjorn2fish, urhookedfish and 1 other

Softy 2,991
I like metal slugs for the casting distance...Also i seen somewhere people using shiny bottle caps, they just fold them in half over a shaft of a long shank hook from memory, tho you would want the wind blowing over your shoulder... bjorn2fish and afishyfish
statesquider 0
I've had a heap of fun launching gulp jerkshads on half oz jigheads at schools of larger salmon. But you really can't go past anything metal ;)The one i personally use is gillies pillies. All sizes and not too expensive :)Generally i now use a 2-4kg rod with a 2500 spooled with 8lb and a 10-15gm gillies pilly. You can cast them a mile Makes any salmon a HEAP of fun! afishyfish, 4THALOVE and bjorn2fish

MarsOne 137
No doubt my favourite salmon lure is whatever is cheapest at Big W/Kmartaround a 40g size, or 10-15 with the bream gear bjorn2fish
TT 2
Gday Guys.Well just spent a weekend at Port Vincent and did some Salmon Flicking. Got up early at the High Tide and threw cubes of Pillies, Aniseed Nuts, Pellets and also drizzled Tuna Oil. Getting a strong stream going anad managed a few times to get the resident Salmon School to do there 'morning run.'I was flicking this Lure around through the Stream and picked up many fat and large Salmon/ STs. They were ripper fun following and smacking the lure and all the while me trying to stop them on 4lb Braid and a 2 - 4 kg Rod! Cool! Here is the Lure. The Berkley Frenzy Flicker Shad in Blue Tiger. Cheers Guys and good luck with your Salmon endeavors! TT Tinker, bjorn2fish and Ugly4Life
Ugly4Life 41
Quick side question on the topic of lures; I've been considering changing the trebles on my lure for single circle hooks. Any advice? I was thinking of removing the front treb entirely and just running one circle on the back because I'm sick of how much damage the trebs do to a fish's mouth when I am not going to keep them.Is it as simple as just replacing them? bjorn2fish
statesquider 0
Pretty well, but you'll need to find the right sized hook so it balances well and works as it should.I've been meaning to change a few for a while. I'm going to take the lures i want to change into the shop so i can see exactly what they'll look like :)Certainly worth doing if you plan on releasing Ugly4Life
Ugly4Life 41
Thanks state. I think I will change them up tomorrow and have a go.
talbo 0
I think it's a good idea to replace trebles with single hooks, however I wouldn't be using circles. I'd use Gama Octopus Hooks.
statesquider 0
I reckon hooks with a flat eye would work best. For the life of me I can't think of what they're called
archerfish 685
U4LI agree with talbo - don't bother with the circle hooks, as they're not designed for that particular purpose. Here's a couple of options you might like to try, depending on your lure:As you can see, one style of hook has its eye at a 90 degree angle compared to the other. Feel free to experiment with hook size to make sure you don't upset the action of the lure.Hope this helps...Cheersaf bjorn2fish and Just Me
TT 2
The others are right!Chuck a couple of Owner SJ41's in 3/0 Should be fine mate. All depending on the Lure though. Good Luck!
statesquider 0
Cheers Archer! The decoys in the pic are what i was attempting to explain
archerfish 685
And, of course, if you don't want to worry about split rings, you can also throw doubles into the equation if you want to start a debate...
plankton 725
As far as salmon lures, like some have stated, raiders or any other cheap metal slugs. When the onshore wind is up around 20 knots or more I'll go to a Haw River Tackle 2oz fatty stingsilver, they're a nice squat slug with no flat sides and cast into the wind really well, gotta get them from the US though. Also, circle hooks work great on metal slugs for salmon, I use Eagle Claw Lazer Sharp ones, they have a slightly bigger eye than others and can be used on a split ring without binding up, always hook them in the mouth and keeps them on the hook during the fight but easy as to unhook and barely any damage to the fish. bjorn2fish
bjorn2fish 4,612
Having a read of this old thread and thought it was worth a bump with the salmon season kicking off at an exciting rate this year
plankton 725
There are some great, inexpensive metal slugs at Fishing Wholesalers, called Kamashark I think, all I do is swap out the crappy treble hook for a circle. bjorn2fish
