I’m just sharing a step by step instructional video I created on the basics of bream fishing .
In this instance, we are using live scrub worms to catch bream. We guide you through tackle and gear selection, rig setup, bait presentation then me and my kids catch a few bream on the Maribyrnong River. It’s a great video for beginners, or those looking for a few tips or those looking to take their kids fishing, especially during the school holidays.
This same guide can be used for all different types of fish species such as trout, redfin, carp, bream, mullet, bass, perch, whiting and much more. It’s very simple and very effective all you need is a rod, reel, line, ball sinker, swivel, and hook and your all set.
Make sure you sub the channel if you enjoy the video

So a good mate of mine finally decided that fishing isn't all that bad and wanted to get into it a bit more and learn the fundamentals of fishing. So what perfect way than to soak some baits down the Onk.
Didn't have to travel far to pick up my mate... (only 3 houses down) Then we headed off to purchase some bait. Headed to The Scene on Seaford rd grabbed some Prawns and White bait and headed to our spot. My favourite place to soak baits for bream would have to be around Old Noarlunga as you will always get bites and land a few fish.
Setup at the first spot with the tide slowly pushing in. I rigged my mates rod up with an Small ball sinker running to a Size 2 Daichii hook on 4lb leader. After I gave him a quick run down on how to rig up and put the bait on to make it as natural looking as possible, he cast out and I began to rig up my gear. While I was rigging up his line went off and he had a fish on! 1st Cast!!!!! After a short fight the first fish was on deck, being a mid 20cm Bream. I was stoked for him while thinking it might be a good session.
I threw my unweighted whitebait in and within a minute I landed my 1st for the day. It was pretty much bite city the whole session with plenty of missed strikes and bait pickers keeping us entertained. I ended up getting 4 ok fish with the biggest going 31cm and most sitting at the just under legal size. With a few babies thrown in the mix. Unfortunately my mate couldn't land another fish in the mean time.
After an hour and a half of fishing this spot I got busted off by a decent fish so we decided to go try somewhere else. Got to the next spot it was pretty much the same Bites galore, plenty of missed fish but I managed another 4 good fish... This time with the biggest going around 34cm.
After awhile my mate was not so much getting annoyed but was thinking it might of been his combo that he was using why he wasn't getting as many fish as I was. So i gave him my rod to use and I used his $60 combo. He commented on how nice my combo was to use, while i felt odd using a cheaper combo as I havent used one in such a long time. So 1st cast with his setup and I was on... He couldn't believe it haha. I mentioned that it comes down to practice and trying new things and getting use to how fish react etc. He did however get alot more bites and attempted hook ups that before.
After a few hours and it getting close to dinner time we called it a day. It was good to get out and soak a bait and just enjoy a session.. I think I got my mate hooked which is a good thing. Hoping I can teach him a few things and get another keen fisherman involved.
In the end I probably scored a dozen bream and a few Salmon trout, while my mate got just the one. But one enough to make him happy.

Finally managed to get dad off the couch! used some mackrel, tommie and bloodworms for bait and had a cracker of a time with the small bream. The biggest, recorded Bream went it at 29cm as our target for the night was 30+cm, but we just could'nt hook the big ones. Good fun on light gear as they tend to bust you off around the pylons and poontoons.
Regards,
Tom
