Cal reacted to Kuerschie in Lure hook placement
Hi Cal, I find that style A is best for getting a secure hookup. C can result in more snags than the others, B is good if you are fishing snagging waters as the hooks will get less snagged.

Cal reacted to AquaticResearch1 in How much rod tip 'flex' is considered good/bad/ok
As with alot of things in fishing it is dependant upon 1000001 variables.

A very "wobbly" rod, that is to say it is softer in the tip, will cast lighter weights such as those used for the species you've mentioned further than a "less wobbly", that is to say a stiffer tipped rod could. This is because the softer rod will "load up" with the weight, and use the loaded section to propel the bait/rig further.

However, a slow tapered rod, meaning the rod blank bends a long way down the blank, almost all the way to the grips, can be more of a liability than a help in casting and especially hook setting.

You see, in the lower end range of rods and fibre glass rods the softness extends throughout the blank. This leaves the angler with minimal punch or hook setting power, therefore they are hindered in their ability to sink the barb through flesh and they miss alot of bites.

The "perfect" rod would have a fast taper or Extra fast taper yet still have a sensitive tip. The sensitive tip allows the angler to cast light weights accurately and detect bites easily, while the fast taper allows the hook to be set far more easily. Unfortunately, the bulk of rods like this are made of Graphite, and the better rods tend to start from the $100 mark.

I tend to find if using monofilament a stiffer rod is required to compensate for the stretch, while braid can allow you to use a softer rod due to its lack of stretch.

So to answer your question. It depends on the situation. A wobbly tip would be better for casting in your situation (assuming you go with a glass rod, graphite generally regains its shape quickly) but the rod cant be slow and soft all the way through as you wont be able to set the hooks.

If I were in your situation I would look at the "Royale Gold" or something like that series in Kmart. The rods are cheap but they are light and they are far more crisp than similarly priced rods. This would probably be your best bet on a compromise between "wobbly" light weight casting rods and "stiff" hook setting/heavy weight casting rods.

An example; I have a Daiwa 6 peace travel which i picked up for $25 at the Boat Show one year. I can cast unweighted bread and light hard body's a mile with it. But i cant for the life of me set the hook into Redfin when they strike and when I strike a carp I've got to hit it like I'm striking at a bloody shark! Its a massive trade off and now i only use that rod when I want to have a bit of fun in the Murrays backwaters. Would i use such a soft rod for gar or YFW? HELL NO! I just wouldn't set a hook, I'd cast out to them but would never be able to hook them up over distance. I now much prefer relatively crisp graphite rods as the tip is sensitive and able to load and flick out light weights, but they have hook setting power unlike any glass rod I've ever used and are able to quickly turn the fishes head.

Honestly mate, if you get right into your fishing you'll want to upgrade in no time.

    Hope that makes sense. AR1

This year I will be putting fluro carbon againtst mono leader to test in a practical sense.  As of today I haven't seen any major benefit when running fluro as opposed to mono in the fishing that I do.  The only benefit I have seen is to external parties ie, more cash in the pocket of the tackle shop.

Nice one doobie,I thought for a minute by the title, your southern entertainment may of been casting your lure accidentally into the nudist area and latching on too a couple of plump white pointers.
And  a couple of R rated pics of the whole event.
But alas..  instead you  got onto a couple of hard earned STs, tidy  work mate.

Usually pretty standard 30lb single paternoster with 2 snooded 4/0s and a whole pillie or a double with surf popper on top. Not a very energetic beach, so 4oz stars should likely sufficient, with a swivel-snap to reduce line twist & sinker changes.

Fish as below good fun on lure.

    Jealous, wish i was there.

Just if anyone is interested, Jarvis Walker are now distributing this in Australia. Retail from what I've seen is around $30 for 300 (yards or meters can't remember) Unsure as to wether any site sponsors stock it.

Nothing to get too fancy about with salmon, the good old halco hex works as good as anything, although some cast better the sambos smash them like there is no tommorrow.
Dont know if you can still get them but juro shiners and kokoda raptors do the business and cast better than anything around these days.
I have both and will put a few pics up soon.cheers

Awesome fishing ,thats a horse .Found it interesting the tackle ,Ugly Stick gold and Fin nor reel probably a 300 dollar combo,  that looked to handle the situation more than admirably.
If you watch the fishing shows, the twankers that host them would have you believe the only tools for the job are 2 and a half grand Stellas,T Curves,Saltiga setups ect,go figure. Jimbos Sampson  goes to show a top fisho with  the skills and right presentation  can utilise what tackle he has at his disposal to  tame any beast out there .

I've got a penn prevail 10ft 6' with stella 5000 running 20lb line. 40-50gm lures go a fair way! main one, bit of over kill with stella but might as well use the best reel I've got and it makes fishing ALOT easier!

Then my back up is a silstar crystal tip 10ft 6' with stadic fj 5000 20lb line.
Also rate the fin nor lethal 4000 with 15lb line as a good lure throwing weapon.

hopefully get some photos on weekend as weather is turning good after the change we just had!

    Lines tight!

G"day Aquatic research1,I have used the line for redfin ,carp and salmon trout ,and have to say this as my honest assesment.
Its very good line, doesnt wind knot, casts well ,fishes nice but.....it doesnt really seem to have any advantages over a good quality braid, not for one second does it have any  characteristics of mono, although it  is one fibre as opposed to braids several fibres fused together,it behaves just like a braid.
Its good  for sure, but not revolutionary.
    Cheers
