So you didn't block me, you had "admin" block me, but some how you don't know who I am.....If that the case, how can you be sure your admin blocked me?    You make zero sense. and as per usual going on some tangent instead of focusing on the question at hand.
The fact remains RecFish are still the peak body (initial question asked of this thread), and the liberal government have confirmed Recfish have a valid contract till next year.
The libs have again said they are looking at forming some form of council with the exact details yet to be confirmed.
But Yelliwtail, please be sure to keep us in the loop when something comes to fruition from all your hard work.

After reading all of the comments posted lately it seems to me that there's a perception that because things didn't go the way some people wanted them to then RecfishSA didn't fight on their behalf and just rolled over and let PIRSA do what they want. Were you there? Were you in the room during these negotiations? I was in the room at the bag & boat limit discussions and had to sign a confidentiality agreement to be there, as did everybody in the room. All I can say is that RFSA fought their arses off to prevent the KGW bag limit reduction as did I and just about everybody else that was present. PIRSA went ahead and reduced them anyway.
The Libs have stated that RFSA will be part of the new recreational fishing council, personally, if I were part of RFSA I would be thinking long and hard about whether I wanted the continued grief and hand it all over for someone else to cop it all. 'Coz make no mistake, the new team will cop it just as much as the old team when things don't go our way, and there will be things that go against our collective wishes, that's the nature of the beast. Having just potentially burned my bridges with the above disclosure I may well not be accepted anyway were I to be dumb enough to put my hand up. Why dumb? because I'm too thin skinned to cop the online abuse when things go awry.
No offence to anybody is intended, if any is taken I apologize in advance.
Go for your lives, I won't be back online 'til next Wednesday.
    Cheers

    Hi Aussie Dave,
Love your posts this year so please don't take this as an attack on your views which I believe you are more than entitled to have. But I would like to step in here just to highlight that not all rec fishers fully support the ideals of SAFA etc.
While I don't think SA has the optimal rec fishing representation currently I am very cautious about supporting rec fishing bodies like SAFA. My caution comes from some of the material I read from their site which is clearly wrong or demonstrates a lack of ecological understanding.
A bit about me, I am not aligned with any particular rec fishing body - I follow all of them as I believe they are united in the overarching goal to make rec fishing better and fairer, so in that they all have my support. I am a keen recfisherman since forever, I also have a PhD in Aquatic ecology and spend a great deal of my time learning about fish biology/physiology and about our aquatic ecosystems.
So in saying this I do support recfish SA's stance on marine parks and am glad we have them - whether they are in the correct places is outside the scope of this post to debate so let’s just leave that there.
I am happy with the 20 blue crab limit for recs – I am not happy about the pro situation
I do not support the commercial export of KGW (who can afford to buy local whiting??) and think the bag limit for recs is very low. But I am happy to cop it on the chin if it means stock replenishment.
I was not fussed by the recent cuts to rec bag limits and think that some are still way too high. Boats limits of 30 for flathead (we don’t even have a flathead fishery in SA) and bream are ridiculous and show a total lack of knowledge about rec fishing from PIRSA (imagine we all went and ripped 30 big bream out of the Port on a weekly basis). The population of people keeps growing therefore the bag and boat limits can only keep decreasing if we are to remain sustainable. More thought needs to be given towards the sustainability of commercial fisheries given the small percentage of people these industries represent when compared to the increase in general population and the economic contributions rec fishers make. In that I do agree with SAFA as I believe I have read similar on their site before.
So that’s all from me I hope people read this in the respectful tone it was intended. Keep fighting the good fight. We’ll get there eventually.
    Peace
    mrfish

You nor RecfishCentral represent ANYONE on ANY Council at this point in time.
You’ve just posted another promotional political article published in a small newspaper about the same concept that’s been spruiked pre election.
The liberals havnt firmed anything up other than the fact RecFish are still the peak body and have a valid contract till next year.
By all means tho, please do check in and let us know when something actually happens.

Probably carbon steel, not stainless. Never store a knife in its sheath. Not much you can do about the rust, if it is a decent quality, you should be ok. Give it a good sharpen and try it out. Have an old KBar style knife i have had for about 35yrs. Blade is wearing away from use and sharpening,  but still holds a razor edge.

Trout fishing the hard to get to streams/creeks.. 17-9-17

Getting into some of these small streams & creeks can be quite testing..

Once there, well it's worth it most times..

I was sitting here today going through some of the 22,000 plus photos that I have taken over the years I've spent trout fishing rivers, streams & creeks around Tasmania since moving here back in March 2000. I know the majority trout fishers that fish the rivers normally go to the more accessible areas and rarely try the more difficult hard to get to little rivers, streams & creeks that are quite plentiful here. The majority of them run into the larger rivers and all contain trout of various sizes. Yes it can be quite tough getting through the dense foliage to get to one of these streams and keeping a lookout for snakes as well. It can take up to an hour of bush bashing just to reach a stream only to find out there's not enough water in it or there's no fish in the one that has plenty of flowing water.. That's just one of the minor downfalls with this type of fishing, then there's the times when the effort is well worth it and you'll find one that's holding trout. Most of them are are usually a dark tannin coloured streams & creeks and have held some nice browns of various sizes.. While going through my photos today I didn't realise how many of them were tough going with so many fallen trees, log jams etc on them. Now when I look back on it I feel I was very well rewarded for the effort put into it by catching some beautiful wild brown trout in them. Yes it was tough work and there were plenty of disappointing trips too, but that's what this type of fishing is all about isn't it...

One of the rewards of fishing these small streams/creeks..

And one of the many downfalls on them too...

This is where it can be tough on the old body..

But then, the hard work is worth it once again..

Peace & tranquility in a small stream..

Golden colours in this wild brown trout..

Another log jam, climb over it or go around it... Hmmm!!! I went the hard way.. "over it"

Another beautiful area on a small stream..

Doesn't get any better than this.. well it does really..

    cheers

when in the fishing club years ago, on the rocks i would use spark plugs as sinkers, they open up when caught and 90% of the time you get your hooks back, just hook another spark plug to the loop and go again. You will be surprised how they don't get snagged as much too, must be there shape! i also used to have the hook at least a meter off the bottom to try and keep it out of the weed.

But most of the time we float fished, use one of those snapper style floats with the lead on the bottom  tie a bit of wool on the main line to set the depth, check a knot site how to tie it. Let the float sit on a swivel to cast then tie ya leader to the swivel with a hook on it, a foot leader should do and it's then like having an un-weighted bait sitting in the water

    best of luck mate

I have found using spoon type sinkers or ball/egg shaped sinkers tend to snag up less in reefy or rocky areas. Also I attach the hooks at least 1 metre up.

Depends on what you're looking to target. The Shimano rod is pretty light and would be good for mullet or yfw. The other two are much heavier and more like salmon/mulloway rods.

I'm not familiar with that reel, but it's always good to match them to the rod. Take it to the shop and try it on each of the rods you're interested in and see how they balance.

Short version is some the beacons in both areas have been relocated and or upgraded.
Probably no big deal but if you fish or travel through the area on a regular basis, particularly at night, it may be wise to keep an eye out for a while.

Not sure if we'll get any this year, but with a moth of Winter still to go anything can happen down here in Tassie..

With the trout season opening only a couple of weeks away I had a nice surprise this morning when Pam walked in and gave me a package that she had picked up at BCF..

Having lower severe back problems and suffering with angina Pam went bought me a GME personal locator beacon. I have been thinking of getting one for quite some time mainly because I always fish the rivers on my own. This one also has GPS which will put me a 5 meter radius of being found which is better than a 5 kilometer range.

So I registered it this morning and it's all go from now.. Let's hope I don't have to use it..

Bait Caster reacted to RedReeler in Some interesting info
    Hi all,

I'm a member of GGAF (Golden Grove Amateur Fishing) and last night we had our annual "tackle night". We had some guest speakers from RecfishSA and Spot On Salisbury. Thought I'd share some info I found useful/enlightening.

Before I start, I'm just sharing this for informational purposes. I'm not affiliated with RecfishSA in any way. I know opinion is divided on what kind of a job RecfishSA do, but can we please leave that for another topic - I'm not looking to start a debate or any controversy. As I said, this is just some useful info and I'd share it no matter the source.

First off we had Danny Simpson (executive officer of RecfishSA) show us the new RecfishSA website and focus a bit on their "Fishing Locations Map". So this is a relatively new tool to their website and has many overlays you can apply to a map of SA, such as jetty locations, boat ramp, some commonly known GPS marks, freshwater fishing locales etc. Some of this is of limited value to be honest. For example most of the jetties and boat ramps just have coordinates then a link to DPTI for any detailed information. What I thought was the most useful bit of info from this map was the River Murray Public Access Sites layer. Click this on and you can see all Unallocated Crown Land, National Parks, Public access areas and Reserves along the Murray. Really useful if you want to head to the Murray and do some off the grid camping and fishing. I think this is one of those tools that will have great value to some and limited to others - but either way its worth checking out https://recfishsa.org.au/fishing-maps.

Danny also touched on the state of opening up more reservoirs for recreational fishing. Talks are still continuing with results expected - the impression I got was that progress, albeit slow progress, is being made and the success of the warren has been a good foothold. On the Warren, all species have been caught except for Cod at this stage. Hopefully they're still around fattening up. Also mentioned results of the size limit/watercraft for reservoir survey that was held recently. Nothings set in stone, but I got the impression that the proposal is likely to be similar size limits to the Murray, length limits might be slightly different. Cod will remain protected for at least 5 years and once they get big and fat that decision might be revisited. Silver Perch will be OK for taking as they are stocked and not protected in that environment. No boat limits for kayaks/canoes as these typically only have a 1-2 person capacity anyway. He mentioned they're hoping to have Kayaks and the like on the Warren this coming Summer - make of that what you will but I wont hold my breath that things will move quite so fast!

Next we had Dr. Travis Howson. Travis holds a relatively new position at RecfishSA, that of Habitat Officer. He gave a short presentation focusing on how the Onk has changed over the years and steps that RecfishSA, in conjunction with local recreational fishers and OzFish Unlimited. OzFish Unlimited is kind of based off of a US organisation called  Trout Unlimited. Its basic aim is to get recreational fishers to think about, care for and contribute to the upkeep and restoration of fishing habitats. For those interested, this is the presentation Travis gave - if nothing else, its cool to see how the Onk used to look. https://ozfish.org.au/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Fishers-Tackling-Fish-Habitat-Issues-in-the-Onkaparinga.pdf

After RecfishSA finished up we had our annual speakers from SpotOn Salisbury Steve and Lyn Castle. Steve and Lyn taught us some knots and rigs useful for all sorts of fishing. it was surprising to me that what I would've thought were basic, essential knots were not common knowledge to most of the club. Huge thanks to Steve and Lyn for once again coming along and sharing their extensive knowledge.

Was a great night, and I think on of the highlights on the clubs calendar.

    Cheers,
    RedReeler
