  1. So myself and the K man are heading off to Darwin early April. We have a full day charter planned for one of them but have 2 full days up our sleeves to do some Landbased fishing.

Anyone one ever done any up there? Any hints and tips would be great. Hoping to smack a couple fish that pull drag. What should we expect up there apart from the obvious barra?

    Any help would be fantastic!

    Has anyone used Catchall Crawlers?

Just thinking if they are as good as they state then they are good as beach worms etc.

The beach/sand worms are expensive for a 'couple' of them, but the Crawlers are still expensive ... but how many do you get in a tub?

If you get a dozen for $10 compared to say $10 for a couple of beach worms, maybe they are the way to go.

I don't know ... just putting it out there.

When i was working in the Tackle Shop a little while ago a customer purchased a packet and headed down to the onk.

couple hours later he came back with a photo of him holding a an 115cm mully he caught in the first 20mins of fishing.

Was his 1st ever mully too.

Have seen people use them in the salt but have been more productive in the freshwater then then the saltwater

  3. I would personally look at the Daiwa LT range of Reels. for around that $150 price point you can get an Daiwa Exceler LT. Nice and smooth, light, look good and have nice drag systems on them. I mainly have higher end gear now.  I lost the drag knob while out fishing a few weeks ago while up yorkes. so i needed a reel to get me by Picked up the exceler i was quite impressed by it.

At the end of the day it is what feels comfortable and right for you. everybody is different and like different things best to try out a whole range of reels on your rod as Bratko mentioned and see what feels good.

I would suggest Brighton Tackle and Bait or Fishing Wholesalers.

I've tried beach worming but have onky got a couple in a few hours. In the same time, my mate will get 50+ - he doesn't miss many worms he targets.

I used to get tube worms near the subbase but haven't been there for around a decade!

Seaweed worms can be plentiful but normally only look for them on yorkes.

The other option you have is to get a good quality bait pump and get some nippers. Fish love them and they are plentiful if you keep your eye out for their holes 😊

Fishing Wholesalers Stopped buying Live worms quite sometime ago... Long story.........

  5. The Penn Prevail and Penn allegence in the 12ft 12-20kg models are a great surf rod for under $200.

I have the allegence myself and have no issues with it. Have up to 200g cast weight aswell.

They were the biggest selling surf rod in the tackle shop I was working at.

Wilson mt8144 would be a nice stick aswell.

  6. Myself and @Kuerschie went down south this morning chasing Carp on fly and bream.

I had a few good looks on bream on fly but not committing and there were carp around but not really interested.

Kuerschie had 3 good looks at carp but nothing committed either.

Then off tomorrow morning to cook the bbq with other fellow Strike Hookers for the Onkastompa!

  7. I'll have a look into BKK Southie, cheers mate. I've gone through most of my first packet now and the front treble is the one that cops it most, so really 1 heavier treble on the front may not hurt.
It shouldn't affect it tooo much. Id just buy 1 pack and give it a try if it doesn't work out you've only outlaid 10 buxs and can use them for other lures.

I was looking at the BG's pretty good bang for buck

At my time working in the tackle shop i sold countless Daiwa BGs for guys wanting them for a range of species and had all positive feedback from them customers.

Only issue i saw was the drag clicker broke but that was replaced.

Have seen plenty of Snapper Tuna Kingfish even Sharks caught on them.

Even Alan Hawk gives them a great reel!

Only downside for me was i love power ball handle knobs. The Daiwa BGs handle knob is riveted. There are ways to get around it but other than that they are a great reel!

  9. Value for Money you can't beat the Daiwa BG.

Being non mag sealed you can service yourself. And being Daiwas Flagship reel parts will be readily available for the next 6 years which is piece of mind.

    Parts are fairly cheap aswell.

They also come with carbon drag washers.

  10. Nice mate Such cool looking fish! Have seen good fish pulled from quite a few streams around SA well over 50cm... I'm still yet to break the 50cm mark for wild fish. One day when I get more time up my sleeve hopefully!
