statesquider got a reaction from Tyke in "Baits, Rigs & Lures for South Australian Fishing"
I saw an advertisement for this book a month or two ago and completely forgot about it until I stumbled across it in my newsagent the other day. It is co-authored by Shane and Brett Mensforth and the quality of this book is second to none. The print and paper quality is brilliant considering this is just a small publication and the photos are fantastic addition and is very reasonably priced at $19.95. The information on the cover states that the book covers the most effective rigs, proven techniques, ultimate baits and the top lures that I can guarantee you it does cover these in depth in the 112 pages included in the book. The book covers all of the important species that you would generally target whilst in South Australia. These species include:*Snapper*Mulloway*Salmon*King George Whiting*Tommy Ruff*Bream*Yellowtail Kingfish and Sampson Fish*Trevally*Flathead*Mullet*Snook*Yellowfin Whiting*Garfish*Callop and RedfinAll of the above mention species are described in detail as well as recommended berley, the fishing gear required to target them, the different terrain they can be caught around (e.g. wrecks, jetties, reefs, estuaries, beaches etc) as well as detailed descriptions on what bait to use and how to best ways to present them. For each fish, there are several lures suggested and generally, 3-4 detailed pictures of rigs for different situations/presentations.Reading through all of the information for each fish gives you a much better understanding in how they work and how best you can target them to give yourself the greatest opportunity of bringing home a feed or just some sport. This book would he highly suited to those that are new to fishing or for those that do not have a wide range of experience with the species in this book. Even for the seasoned fishoes out there, this book still has a lot of useful information contained within its pages. If there were only one book that I could read regarding fishing in SA this is definitely the most useful one to have around. It really does contain all the information you could possibly require for targeting each species. So get out there, have a flick through its pages, and see if it is to your liking!CheersTom*I would like to add I have only written this as I wanted to share it with others and I have no affiliation with the authors, everything written is my opinion only*

I grew up on the West Coast of the EP, i surf sailed water skied skin dived and fished most of my life there. so had a few run ins with sharks here and there.. Losing two mates to white pointers in a short time period put a downer on the water sports for a while. but there is one mate id surf any beach with.. this is Bellsa's story..i happened to be learning to surf on an old Vietnam era Step tail single fin board one day at a local beach 15km from my home town when i snapped off the fin.. and was unable to continue. Bellsa paddled in and offered me one of his boards from the back of his Troopy. i then went out and had the best session of my life. Bellsa then helped me out even more so by selling me the sweet little 6'4" Aloha Thruster i had borrowed for a princely sum of $50. Then proceed to teach me how to set the new fin and fibre glass it all back together again on my old board. nothing out standing so far..one day when surfing that same beach i was visited by a bronzie at about 7' so paddled in to the shore for a break. Bellsa and a few of the other lads came down a half hour later and asked about why i was on shore as they could see they waves where of good quality and well with in my limits. i told them about the shark. they analysed the surf and decided 8 pairs of legs in the water was better than 1 pair.. so we paddled out again. now comes the inspirational part..Bellsa and one of his mates where both surfing that break on another occaison. Bellsaz happened to be on shore at the time when he looked out and noticed his mate in the water in trouble. a large bronzie had taken a couple of bites of his thigh/chest and board. the board being between him and the shark we think was all that saved him. Bells ran straight back into that water paddled out the 100meteres or so and then dragged him to shore. raced him to hospital and saved his life. no thoughts of that shark what so ever. it was his mate in trouble and he did the only thing he could think of. SAVE HIM!the shark snapped a few teeth off in the board and from this day from what i can remember. that board is wall mounted with the shark bite prominently on display. when i left that township.. i left my 6'4 aloha, my 6'2 aloha, my 7'1 step tail and my 9'6 Kobi Malibu with Bellsa.. knowing if i ever went back.. id always be able to go for a surf with one of the best blokes in town. to this day.. he still surfs those same breaks.. i hope one day to join him on a wave once again..

A mate of mine was fishing from Granite Island a number of years ago when unexpectedly he watched in horror as a yacht got into difficulty, it was really windy with rough seas and the yacht capsized. In disbelief he saw the two sailors, a husband and wife fall over board and they were in real trouble. My mate was fishing on his own, he peeled off his boots and dived in at great personal risk, he hauled back the lady to shore, by which time other people gather on shore as he went out to rescue the husband. He managed to bring the bloke in but unfortunately the husband died. Those on shore who witnessed the rescue by my mate notified authorities and spoke of my mates heroism in going out to rescue this couple. He was given a special award for his efforts at a ceremony some time later. However this silent hero mate of mine didn't tell me this story till I had known him for many years. Just goes to show you can be out fishing when the totally unexpected happens. Any of you guys got an unusual tale to tell? Regards Marko.

You cant have a better start to a road trip for two peeps without KFC.If your doing an alnighter on the jetty you buy a mixed bucket with nugs, cripsy strips, chicken, chips etc. Eat a fair bit of it straight up..then wack it in the esky and once you get a bit peckish during the night you go for the second hoe.Oh man....the only prob is it normally runs out b4 the morning sun pops up so you end up having to eat a pie on the return journey home anyway and end up stopping at Wakies.oh summer days bring it on.!!!

Small Bronzie can be found around the northern metro area as the waters warm at this time of year.In a small boat for my money I'd be heading off the section bank, anywhere west of St Kilda through to the silt grounds at Outer Harbour.Troll a lure for snook on the way out, so that you've got back-up baits if need be, but my preference would be for Tommie, Shittie or Slimey livebaits suspended under a balloon.Get a berley trail happening, and when the small fish turn up and start schooling, hopefully the Bronzies wont be too far behind.Ya don't need too much in the way of tackle for these little ones, and ya can even make do with one of those bought and pretied "Toothy" rigs if need be, but check the crimps if ya do!I've always had most luck in fairly calm conditions on nice clear days.Good luck!

Where can my mate and I go in a boat to find small sharks? Specifically gummies/bronzies or schoolies (haha not year 12's who have just finished school!).We tried grange tyre reef yesterday for whiting and sharks but didn't get any runs on the shark rods. Managed 2 nice whiting and a leathery as well as snapper on the whiting rods. It got ridiculous so we had to move a couple of times to avoid the snapper smashing our baits but they were that thick they couldn't be avoided. (Yes i'm aware of the ban, yes I'm aware you can't target them and no I was not specifically targetting them and yes they were all returned to the water in perfect condition and all swam off brilliantly)I'm not looking for peoples spots but more so a point in the right direction to a general area. Not after anything big but we want to chase them from the boat so we don't get hastled by idiots telling us we're breaking the law. I do admire how all the jetty sharkers on here manage to put up with the flack they cop but I'd like to avoid!Any help will be greatly appreciated guys/gals!Cheers

I love my pistol lip grips Makes life a lot easier when you don't have a net around. I initially bought mine for fishing in the torrens as I like to ride in. Very handy if you are running light gear and I love them when i'm wading and can't carry a net. Once the grips are on them they do not come off!Definitely worth investing in!

Hey Del mate, reallysorry to hear this news. If I had won lotto last night I'd happily take you down the tackle shop and we could have a ball. :)Most of us have have sadly been victims of useless low lives stealing or causing damage, mischief or assault etc. Know that all of us on this site love our fishing, appreciate the hard work it takes to get that extra lure etc, and your frustration is felt by all of us.One thing I believe though, and it helps me, is that you WILL continue working hard and fishing hard. Eventually and gradually you will have a full load of tackle again, and still have a pretty satisfying life. Rich and rewarding. The scumbags who stole your stuff will probably get away with it THIS time but they simply cannot keep it up for ever, infact probably not that long. Live by the sword and die by the sword... They can only show so much dis respect before they get dis respected, and in their cockroach world, it will come in the form of a proper Bashing, overdose, hit by car, prison, some other kind of unsavory death. Also I can guarantee there's no love, happiness or light in their lives. In the words of Mr T "I pity the fool".About 8 years ago me a couple of mates and my mrs were attacked by a gang of people of certain appearance. Luckily no one was properly injured and more due to our running skills rather than fighting prowess haha. I later had the opportunity to take some serious revenge on this mob, but i said I didn't want a part of it. The best revenge was going to be success and never ever going to that suburb again. We now have two beautiful kids, happy healthy lives, nice home etc. And we sleep soundly with nothing on our conscience :)Those ferals will still be drinking, drugs etc with our tax money and pinching gear outta cars, but would have copped half a dozen or more kicks in the head, been in and outta jail, live in a hovel etc. That's the ones still alive.Anyway, blah blah blah, you get the picture. I feel for ya mate.I am a former soldier and firmly believe in sending these people into the military, no bloody dole. Go serve this country and see what happens if your a lazy shit oversees where they have no social security! And most of all get a bit of pride and respect.

I really don't have anyone that I can talk to that truly understands my obsession with fishing and the ocean but I know I can always turn to you lads and ladies on here and get opinions from people who understand. We'll never all agree on things but all you have to do is read the outrageous opinions that have been made by people on the bronzie this topic was started about...http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/bronzed-aussie-turns-up-for-beach-weather/comments-e6frea6u-1225944752103Honestly what I have learnt from reading people's comments on that article are that non-fishoes truly do not understand what fishing even involves. They seem to not be aware that sharks are in the water everywhere and it's not the fisherman that make them come in. One lady seems to believe that the person who caught the shark has now drawn a tonne more bronzies into the area and he should now be responsible for anything that happens to swimmers. I truly believe that most people don't realise a squid, tommy ruff or even a snapper has as much right to be in the ocean as a bronzie yet they all eat these things. This is why I feel this forum is a godsend and I am so thankful I've joined and been able to discuss an obsession with like minded people. I do apologise if I have come across as specifically targeting anyone personally in this topic but all I'm really trying to do is get explainations behind people's comments so I can better understand why they feel that way.All we can do is represent our chosen passion in the best light possible and inform others as best we can so they can better understand why we're so passionate.CheersSS

Yep, thems is my words alright!Don't get too cut up about the fuss guys! Every year when the weather warms, sharks create this huge frenzy of opinions and emotion! If you fish for sharks they condemn you for enticing them in.If you release them, you are condemned for endangering swimmers by letting them go.If you kill them you are condemned for the needless destruction of a beautiful creature. What they dont seem to understand is that Bronzies are always around, but they are a fairly docile shark which dont normally pose a danger to humans. In fact, most of us would have swum in close vicinity to them many times without ever knowing it.As far as I'm concerned, there's no ban on taking Bronzies, so as long as you are following the law, sharks are fair game and beaut tablefare!Well done to the guy who landed it, and I hope you enjoy it! In fact, I hope you've got a bl**dy big freezer! I'll be out there in a few weeks myself, but I just target the littlies! I'm hoping to bag one from the kayak this season, and if I do you guys will be the first to hear about it...........and bugger the vegans! ;)Then again, I also murder and eat most of gods little creatures, so the cute little baa lambs, the furry little bunnies, the big eyed moo cows, and a whole host of others are all destined for slaughter! Even the ugly crocodiles, snakes, goats, pigs, camels, emus, kangaroos, eels, ducks and many many others are all fair game. If they move, It's likely I'm gonna have a taste.................WHY???BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL SO TASTY!!! And because that omnipresent god being up there made me carnivorous, so it just aint my fault!

I've seen this somewhere before and couldn't pull up anything in a quick search here so there it is! If you could only use 4 lures (soft plastics, squid jags, metals, poppers, bibbed minnows, etc...) ever again in the salt or fresh what would they be and why?If there is anything else you want to add like the fish you would be targeting etc feel free to go add it in :)For those that require an explanation I'm just interested to see what people regard as their most important lures and use the most Here are my preferences:1) Berkley Gulp Power Minnow 3" in Watermelon Pearl - Accounts for pretty well everything you could want to catch. Is the best thing I have used to catch the largest variety of species with the most consistency. I do not leave home without this!2) Daiwa Emereldas Olive/Cream 3.0 Squid Jag - Easily the most productive squid jag i have used to date. When all else fails this is the jag I turn to and 9 times out of 10 pulls a winner :)3) Yozuri/Duel Aile MG Diet 70mm in Pilchard - This minnow is the go to lure for snook/salmon and flathead, I have caught a handfull of other species on this lure but for the mentioned species this really is a stand out lure that really works when the fish are present. Easy to cast and catches anything4) Gilles Saltwater Pilchard Lure (Salmon metal) 25 grams - Is always handy to have one lying around as an alternative lure for salmon trout/salmon and the odd snook

Yellowfin vs silver whitingReports from Fishcare Volunteers suggest some less experienced fishers are having trouble telling the difference between yellow fin whiting (Sillago schomburgkii) and silver whiting (Sillago bassensis). The two are closely related but can generally be distinguished apart by the colour of the body and fins. The body of the yellowfin whiting is a sandy yellow colouring with the pectoral, dorsal and anal fins a light yellow colour. The body of the silver whiting or school whiting is a light olive colour on top and white below separated by a longitudinal silvery stripe.Yellowfin whiting has a minimum size limit of 24cm and a daily bag limit of 20 and a boat limit of 60. Silver whiting has no size or catch limits but fishers are encouraged to take only what they need.
