gregtech reacted to coogan in If you could only pick one, what lure would you use for tuna?
I fish out of Portland.
The first lure I clip on is a Black Magic Jetsetter in colour Burple.
The smaller 4" skirts seem to be favoured early in the season. For me, last January-March, along with the jetsetter, the Pakula hothead original skippy's in white, blue or green got fish. The Halco angry bird did well also.

I like my leader to be well and truly on the spool when the fish is near the boat. Speeds up the capture I think. Minimum 2 rod lengths. As for lures, I like to wait till the fish are found and launch Adagio 125 heavies. Would rather catch one on a sticky than bag out on the troll.

Agree that the blind troll is the way to locate the schools but I'll let the rest of the crew look after that and my outfit sits in the launcher waiting for the action to start! We do all of our tuna fishing off Pondilowie Bay and the way the fish behaved varied with every trip. Our biggest fish wasn't even caught on a lure.

I’ve never found them to descriminate, yesty they ate 3 different divers n the biggest went the skirt in the motor wash .
Hardest part of tuna fishing is finding them, the rest is easy.

Find a school feeding on the surface and throw 5-6" surface lures like a pencil popper or a spook at them. Best fun you'll ever have!

Don't know about others experience but at least 90% caught blind trolling, no surface activity at all.
I have around 5-6m of leader
Cheers

Good luck tomorrow arvo Snapperhead. For the first time in many years, we won't be out there on "opening day".
But luckily for me, my wife has allowed me to paint the house ready for Christmas........

gregtech reacted to jackmac in What are everyone's fishing plans for Xmas and new years?
You will have to get friendly with my younger brother the boat is his I just get the pleasure without the cost.It comes out of the water tomorrow for a barnacle scrape a cut and polish and a brand new side scan 3d sounder fitted. To many$$$$$ for my liking, but worth every cent.A bit different to the 12 ft tinney and the 5hp seagull we started fishing together in many years ago.

Jacmac, if you need an "anchor bitch", let me know. No boat this summer and I'm struggling already! New hull not here till late Feb. The SBTs can take their time getting here this year!!!!!!

gregtech reacted to southie THE BANGA in What are everyone's fishing plans for Xmas and new years?
Unfortunately I now have 2 jobs and I will be working right through till the New Year. Only day off will be Christmas day it looks like at the moment.
Only upside is the $$$$ so once everyone goes back to work/school I'll have some cash to get away for a bit!
Hopefully i'll have some time after work to go chase some beach species locally, if all else fails ill go have a hit down the vines

gregtech reacted to bjorn2fish in Colour loss with depth of water
I just saw this on Facebook and found a version I could post on here. I thought it may be a handy reference for those that like colourful, shiny lures.
Now to decide what fish actually see these colours the same way we do. I believe UV plays a huge roll.

gregtech reacted to Knackers in Odd find at Largs beach
On scuba or hookah tow a diver behind the boat on a ski rope at idle. If the water is clear the scallops usually sit on the silty banks that run between white sand holes or runs. Generally speaking you won't find them where there is a heap of tape weed. Have a dive around semaphore reef. They are around the tyre reef as well but that from memory is 50 - 60 foot deep.
Once you find a patch you'll be able to recognise the bottom they prefer.

gregtech reacted to Aff in Goolwa Cockles
Hi all,
Went down to Goolwa on Sunday to collect some cockles for bait now that the season has reopened. The hot weather and light winds made it a perfect day for frolicking among the crashing waves. What was surprising was the average size of the cockles we were gathering, being well over 3.5 cm across (legal minimum size). Got enough to last a little while but well under our quota. Didn't take long because finding legal ones was so easy which hasn't been the case over the last few years. They're now packed and stored in the freezer ready for summer sessions.
Thought I'd do it early in the season before PIRSA shuts it down yet again. We don't eat them anyway & I don't think fish are to worried so I don't see why bait collecting is stopped even if there is microbe contamination detected. Let's face you can get seriously ill from not cooking your food properly & bureaucrats don't monitor the contents of our fridge, anyway that's another story now we're all living in this post common sense world, nanny state, economic dictatorship!
So those of you who like foraging for your own bait Goolwa beach seems to be providing good cockles this year. Bear in mind please just take what you think you're going to realistically use so there's plenty for all and plenty left over for nature to replenish itself.
Cheers

gregtech reacted to Meppstas in What fish is this?
That's spot on too archerffish, it's a Whitespotted Anglerfish.. I think I need to update my old Marine & Freshwater Fishes of Sth Aust. book that I've had since 1974.. it may be a little out dated by know and maybe they have one in colour now..
White Spotted Angler fish..

Pick quite a few of them up scallop diving all the way from Brighton to Outer Harbour.

gregtech got a reaction from Knackers in Top Shot mono
It's the leader mono (50m spools). The "plus" version is a bit "stiffer" especially above 24kg but still ties perfect knots. Still better than any fluro Iv'e used and cheaper.

We have used Jinkai for years in various strains and love it. Supple as and ties great knots. I tie 15kg braid to 20kg Jinkai mono with an improved albright without doubling the braid and have never had an issue. I run up to 4 rod lengths of mono and the memory is acceptable.
Cheers,
Greg.
