Compared to Daiwa, there are not a lot of mid sized mid to high end shimanos. You will be looking for something in the 4000 to 5000 size.Have a look at Stradic 4000 Ci4 or Twinpower 4000 FC or if you like baitrunners a Baitrunner 4000D or Thunnus Ci4

Elephant sharks are good to eat if you like shark. They taste similar to Gummy and require similar preparation.

Crabs moult by shedding their shells. Post moulting they are soft and contain less meat.

Head to a popular squidding jetty (port noarlunga, brighton, glenelg) and watch the locals. An afternoon spent watching the old salts in action will teach you more than any book or internet forum. The various techniques are to cast and retrieve a squid jig or put a prawn jig or a wire jag with a tommie on it under a float. Many locals also use a tommie teaser to attract them in.Often local knowledge and location is very important as it is no good being where the squid are not.Off glenelg, the best spot is the end light fishing to the south. Off brighton the north west weed bed off the end is best and off Porties, about halfway along and casting to the north is good. Look for squid ink marks on the jetty as till will give a clue to the local hotspot.

There are some really interesting unconventional rigs that use floats for bottom feeding fish.I sometimes tie clipdown pulley rigs with a breakaway impact shield and put some foam on the hook before wrapping the bait. This lifts up the bait away from crabs. Geoff Wilson has a similar rig incorporating a small water balloon and NZ snapper anglers often use small floats near their hook to lift the bait.In Canberra a really sneaky rig was to suspend two live shrimp under a crystal waggler float. This accounted for some good Callop over the years.Today I was chasing YFW and was stuck on 16 fish before they went quiet. I put my bait 1.5m under a small pencil float. This allowed it to drift with the wind and cover more water while still staying near the bottom. I caught a few more fish and completed my bag.

A float is used forcasting weightdrifting out a baitholding and releasing burleybetter presentation (finesse)suspending a bait at a particular depthindicating a biteGenerally floats are only used for surface feeding fish here is SA as the fishing pressure is much less, and the level of finesse presentations is not required. Many bottom feeding fish do not require a floating rig.I use a float for shark fishing (balloon), pencil or burley float for tommies and gar, small float with whitebait 1m under the surface for snook and small egg float for squidding.Generally whiting snapper, flathead and bream feed closer to the bottom and do not require the use of a float rig.

A Vacuum sealer will remove air and greatly extend frozen shelf life.It will prevent freezer burn and associated spoilage and dehydration, as well as decrease the rate of spoilage by aerobic bacteria

I spent a month on Lord Howe Island a few years back.Due to the island's isolation, the Charter Operators hold a commercial liscence to sell the catch. You are allowed to take enough for a feed and the rest of the days catch is the property of the boat. The fresh fish are processed daily and sold to all the resorts and residents and the general store. The scraps are fed daily to the kingfish on Neds Beach

Thought I'd share a few DIY projects I have been working on. I recently purchased a vibrating blade lure mold and some blade blanks and have knocked a few blades. They have an awesome action and I am customizing a few by painting with nail polish and sticking on some eyes and silver scales. Best of all they come in at only a few bucks each

For those chasing mullies landbased, I thought I'd share my livebait system.I made up a livewell for Yak fishing the Hobie Westlakes round last year. It is portable and the system works just as well on shore. The container is an esky. I cutdown a $30 battery operated camp shower, cut off the shower head and plumbed it into the esky. This connects to some hose pipe with small holes to throw a spray of water across the waters surface. An outlet drain and it is done.I can put this on the edge of water westlakes and drop the intake and outlet over the side. It can fill the esky in a few minutes and keep livebaits alive all day. For transport, I drop the intake into the esky and let it recirculate.
