Trout fishing the hard to get to streams/creeks.. 17-9-17

Getting into some of these small streams & creeks can be quite testing..

Once there, well it's worth it most times..

I was sitting here today going through some of the 22,000 plus photos that I have taken over the years I've spent trout fishing rivers, streams & creeks around Tasmania since moving here back in March 2000. I know the majority trout fishers that fish the rivers normally go to the more accessible areas and rarely try the more difficult hard to get to little rivers, streams & creeks that are quite plentiful here. The majority of them run into the larger rivers and all contain trout of various sizes. Yes it can be quite tough getting through the dense foliage to get to one of these streams and keeping a lookout for snakes as well. It can take up to an hour of bush bashing just to reach a stream only to find out there's not enough water in it or there's no fish in the one that has plenty of flowing water.. That's just one of the minor downfalls with this type of fishing, then there's the times when the effort is well worth it and you'll find one that's holding trout. Most of them are are usually a dark tannin coloured streams & creeks and have held some nice browns of various sizes.. While going through my photos today I didn't realise how many of them were tough going with so many fallen trees, log jams etc on them. Now when I look back on it I feel I was very well rewarded for the effort put into it by catching some beautiful wild brown trout in them. Yes it was tough work and there were plenty of disappointing trips too, but that's what this type of fishing is all about isn't it...

One of the rewards of fishing these small streams/creeks..

And one of the many downfalls on them too...

This is where it can be tough on the old body..

But then, the hard work is worth it once again..

Peace & tranquility in a small stream..

Golden colours in this wild brown trout..

Another log jam, climb over it or go around it... Hmmm!!! I went the hard way.. "over it"

Another beautiful area on a small stream..

Doesn't get any better than this.. well it does really..

    cheers
    Adrian

Well with Fathers Day the other week, and with this jerky post put up and with Harris Scarfes having the Kitchen Couture dehydrator on sale at $49.95 (instead of the usual unbelievable ridiculous price of $199.95).
I thought the kids can get me one

First effort, Cajun Beef Jerky and didn't turn out too bad, but have had better ones.

Used Corned Beef Silverside as already cured.

    1/2 water
    1/4 cup white vinegar
1/2 tsp garlic powder (didn't have any)
    1 tsp oregano
1 tsp thyme (didn't have so used basil)
    1/2 tsp salt
1/2 tsp cajun hot powder (should be 1 tsp, but erred on side of caution)
    1 tsp paprika
    1 tsp pepper

Marinated land ribs over the coals, spuds with coleslaw sour cream and cheese and roast capsicum garlic and olive oil.
Followed by 5 kids fighting over the marshmallow sticks.
Nothing fancy, in the backyard enjoying the sunset over Bird Island sipping a nice wine.
    Gotta love spring 👍

Due to a very slow salmon season around most of our usual, easily accessible salmon beaches we have decided to extend the Strike Hook Salmon Comp for another month. The end date has now been moved to September 30th 2017

Get your salmon posts up in the coming month and good luck!

This a quick one. Not as good as Brutus's but could not get fresh large prawns.

It is simple prawns (frozen) in Panko crumbs. I cooked the rice and mixed saffron and garlic.

So rice bed and prawns with sweet chilli sauce on the side. Looked good and went down a treat.

    Enjoy. I did.

I borrowed some long handled razor fish tongs from a friend over here on Yorks as I have one area that when I walk for crabs (great fun) but the dam razor fish are every where so I thought I need to take a few out in the very near future. Hence the tongs from a friend.
Here is what they look like.

Then thinking about them....  the light in my small brain went on, I know it amazed me too.

They took about 10 minutes each to make and cost me about $5 each as I used s/s wire rope which I had and the handles are left over net handles that "friends" broke on ventures dabbing 4 gar. Got the idea from my crayfish diving days. Check it out as it will work and I can walk 4 crabs at the same time    Happy Days.

If you want to make them let me know (PM) or post here and I will let you know but it is easy. The handles knobs at the end are my old golf balls by the way

Thanks fellas, unfortunately I wouldn't be able to make it down to your store Southie, I'm busy with school work and the drive might be a little long

The info you've given will help me out a lot, so thanks for that! I have been upgraded to $150 so I might be able to get a little more quality in the rod..

I just did a quick look up on the Reels and the going by the specs it will be suited more so for light beach work for salmon, mullet, yellowfin whiting etc going by the line capacity and line sizing.

Anything from 9ft to 10-11ft will be ideal and something along the lines of an 3-5kg to 4-8kg rod will be ample. Most of these rods have a cast weight of up to around 40g max. So it would be ideal for throwing small metals at Salmon, but then will be able to throw an ounce of lead plus bait for the likes of mullet, bream whiting etc.

Daiwa do a couple rods in that range and within that price range aswell. I Work in a Tackleshop if you are after a hand send me a PM and i can help you the best i can.

As a retired chef (amongst other things), one of the most popular dishs on my menu was a simple sweet chilli prawn dish served on rice.

    So simple it's stupid!

In a frypan add a tub of cream, pinch of chicken stock powder, splash of white wine for the pan and a big slug for yourself, and a couple of good shakes out of the sweet chilli sauce bottle.
Bring to boil then let it reduce till thick and yummy.
Once ready use another frypan really hot, splash of olive oil, dob of butter then throw in shelled raw tiger prawns, flip the pan around a bit so they don't stick, turn once , don't overcook the buggers( you want to leave them a bit opaque in the middle, so they still have a nice crunch).
Rip them out of the pan, arrange on your cooked rice the way you like to cook it then pour some sauce over the prawns and sit down with a nice bottle of white wine and enjoy 👌
(Don't give exact measures as it's to your taste how much chilli heat you like)

If I had a function on for 250 people and this was an entree choice I would make around 200 and no complaints to be had.
Cooked for the Clare Gourmet weekend at Eldridge winery one year and served around 950 serves on the one day. People were queued up for a long way. (I ended up pretty pissed on Lee Eldridge's Blue ribbon Shiraz by day's end, and had a great time at the pub after 😂😂😂)
