It’s an interesting question . I ran into a guy at the Pat catching undersized STs and keeping them . Innocent me asked why keep them his answer great mulleway bait . Me but they are not 21 cms legal size he said again great bait . I said as long as you don’t get caught he laughed . And watched me return undersized STs I caught and landed .
    we need more fisheries officers

Dont know what the answer is, license with a test is really the only way to reach everyone....but then people will fish without a license so you still cant win. Bigger fines and more fisheries officers are required.
Was fishing easter monday at the local which was unusually busy. There's myself fishing barbless hooks and putting anything back that's not at least a cm over the limit to be sure im doing the right thing.......... then there's Groups of people spread out who all know each other all keeping everything they caught. From a distance i knew they were doing the wrong thing but from that far away i couldnt be 100% sure so i kept quiet a while and watched. then one of them walked past me to put a fish in a mates bucket and as suspected it was a 20 ish cm king george whiting. I told them loud enough for all the mates to hear that it wasnt legal size and it needs to go back...which he did put that one back ....but then they just kept keeping everything after that any way. Pissed me off so much and did leave a report with fishwatch .

@vogon I do not know the answer, but it frustrates the hell out of me.
I do know that there are those that do not know the rules & are surprised when told that what they are doing is illegal.
There are those that do not know the rules but don't care to know them. and
There are those that know the rules but don't care to follow them.
In the shop we are constantly talking to people about fish bag & size limits as well as safety equipment rules laws and it is very disheartening when you get replies like "they've got to catch you" or "I don't do it very often" or "that's not right"
We had an older gent one day tell us that he often gets his 30 Whiting, "fishing by himself", when we told him that it's not allowed he said "the boat limit says 30" we explained that the personal bag limit applies up till 3 people then the boat limit applies, we even showed him where it says that in the size & bag limit flyer from PIRSA but he still wouldn't have it. He's either very ignorant or is planning to use the old "I didn't know" as his defence when he gets busted.
Maybe the answer is more compliance, bigger fines, hit them where it hurts (back pocket). If they've got something to be scared of they might comply more.
And it's not just any one race, it is across the board

    G'day all,
I'm wondering how we educate the general public as to size limits of various local & frequently caught species.
I spent a couple of hours having a flick today, firstly off the Largs jetty & then at Birkenhead for a few follows but nothing else.
At Largs were a group of people, early 20's, fishing & crabbing. They caught a couple of ST, small looking to me, which they were going to keep.
I asked them if they knew what they had caught & the minimum length, which they did. So how did you measure them? Oh, I put them up against my phone? WTF?
Her phone was about 18cm long. I measured the fish for them, both undersized. I suggested they release the fish, which they did & that they get themselves a measure. There is a
measuring station on the jetty. I can only assume that they would have kept these small fish & any more they caught if I wasn't there.
At Birkenhead, a family chasing & catching Gar. They were catching plenty, all about 15 to 18 cm & keeping them 😠. I asked if they knew the size limit, yes, 21cm to the tip of the
lower jaw, again, WTF. I filled them in on the actual measurements.
I suggested that they check all size & bag limits before they set off for a fish but they didn't seem interested in that. They left almost straight away after our discussion.
A bit long winded, I know but.............
Do we need a flyer that is handed out at tackle shops etc when these people buy their gear? Or do we need a licence where you have to pass a test? Or what? I'm at a loss.
(the groups were from two completely different racial & cultural backgrounds & spoke English as well most of us do)

They already have a stack of info available on jetties, online, phone apps, etc - so there is really is no excuse.
If they really wanted to be sure, the only way to really do it is send out material to every household in SA.
Then they need to enforce the limits, with appropriate fines and forfeits, not the little nothing fines that don't do anything. Word will spread in all communities very quickly and things will change pretty quick as well. No excuses and no cautions. This will then pay for more fisheries officers.
Personally, I wasn't brought up in a fishing family and self taught when I was around 13/14. So it can be done and currently use my role in the sector to educate as well, particularly as not all my customers have english as a first language. I also deal with a number of single mums who are trying to get their kids into fishing but have no idea about what to do. It's great seeing some of the results they are getting as well. As I say to them, you don't need expensive gear to get results - but you have to care about what you are catching, as it's a finite resource that we need to look after.

It was clear, I was pretty much just backing what you said. I always correct people when they come in the shop blaming one particular race

if you use the the split ring on the tow eye of the lure that could be your problem i have found a lot of these split rings have sharp edges on the end of the wire the line of the knot slips into or is located at that point & will break off i have had it happen to me in the past all my lures now have no split ring on the tow eye & are now tied straight to the lures tow eye with a loop knot

I'm with you Softy  with this one, I use Alberto knot as well, I find it quick and easy to tie at night or windy conditions and rarely have failures.
Like I say to others though, find a knot you are comfortable to tie and use it.

The link below is how I learnt to tie the FG & is how I am still tying it now, be it in the shed, standing in the water or in a rocking boat. only need to tighten it down after every set of wraps

A mate of mine was using his custom bream rod for the first time and it was performing like an absolute mule. Guide wraps and wind knots all over the place. At first he thought it would just take some getting used to. But after a couple of hours, he thought there was something seriously wrong with it.

One look at the micro guides and the double uni, was all it took to diagnose the problem. I tied him an FG and suddenly this worthless piece of crap was performing like a dream.

So with the new trend of Micro guides on light weight rods - FG's really get to show why they are worth the effort.

I've blamed reels- rods - braid and poor casting technique for alot of my wind knots and guide wraps in the past - turns out it was just the leader knots I was using.
    ----------------------------------------------------------------------------
I occasionally fish with a boat load of baitos - so when we chase pinkies on lures - I  supply all the outfits - rig all their lures and retie all the snags and wind knots they get.

Baby sitting full grown men and attending to their every need is not something I'm used to or enjoy😉

When you have novices using gear they arent used to, in a crowded boat - problems like windknots are much more likely to happen.

I remember being lazy and just retying one of their terminal windknots with a double uni, so I could get back to fishing. The time I saved tying that knot wasnt worth it - every second cast something would go wrong. - It got to the point where I swapped rods - then I started having problems.

So I cut and retied with an FG and suddenly the world is good again.

I could go on......😉 but long story short - FG's might take a while to master - but that time and effort in the lounge room - will save you time and frustration out on the water. (especially when using rods with small guides)

I'm not one to get into cool knots just for the sake of it - So I resisted the FG for along time - I was like -  my knots are fine and they are easy to tie, so why bother with a fancy one that takes 2 minutes

But the FG is all I tie these days- if your Braid is stronger than your leader - you can tie it the night before and it will last all day - because the line always breaks at the uni I tie to the lure or the hook.

It wasnt until I started chasing Mulloway landbased that I needed the strongest and almost as importantly - easiest to cast - knot available.

I needed to pump out long casts with light lures to reach some of my spots

So the FG is the knot for that

Then I started tying it on my bream outfits and realised it cut windknots and guide wraps down to almost nonexistent.

On the odd occasion I've gone back to my old 5 turn surgeon - or even worse - the uni to uni - I immediately realise the mistake I've made - I can hear those little sh1ts slapping through the guides and I'm just waiting for the associated problems that come with that -

I dont usually have to wait too long😉

There's some people that tie FG's because they are the "cool new kid on the block" but the reason they are the cool new kid, is in the name - They are that "Effing Good"😉

They are definitely some fishing scenarios where you can get away with chunky knots - but very few of those could not be improved by the use of an FG

FG knot, I’m pretty much 100% braid & use a leader on everything from 6lb to 150lb. I find the FG to be the smallest knot & you don’t hear it clicking through your guides which means it’s not catching on them & risking damage to them or impacting on your casts especially on very light gear. It simply gives you a smooth flowing cast

Cheers all. Got some big plans and ideas running through my mind so we'll see how i go...
Tried something different tonight.... Every Lure painter seems to sign there baits with there signature, but i have fat fingers and its hard to sign on small lures so saw another idea on Youtube and decided to give it a go.... Looks really good in my opinion. just adds that special touch...

I printed on some waterslide transfer paper and then slide it onto the bait... then cleared over the top of it.... I like it as mentioned adds an special touch to a custom job.... Can only do Black fonts at the moment but once i upgrade will be doing other colours to contrast the lure i am painting.... Got something special planned with this water transfer paper, just waiting on my blanks to come!

Just thought i'd put a thread up of some of the other lures i have painted up at the moment. Originally my main goal was to mainly paint the topwater Lures for YFW and sell them just as an hobby sort of thing. However after watching countless hours of Youtube and reading forums I now know there is alot more i can paint/create and not to pump them out quantity wise. Instead getting creative and painting for Quality and doing it more for myself.
Unfortunately I have painted up most of the blanks I originally had. I have a few hundred dollars worth of blanks, films, stencils and bits and pieces i have purchased being held as  the coronavirus hit most of the areas I purchase my gear from. So am waiting for freight companies to resume there services so i can start painting up new lures..
My main blanks I am planning to paint will be for the upcoming season. So will mainly be Trout, Redfin and Salmon lures. I have a range of Stickbaits, and metals for the Salmon. The Trout and Redfin will be a range of minnows perfect for both dams/lakes and creeks and streams.   I will keep you all up to date with the processes and what I create.  In the mean time here are a couple I have painted over the last month or so ....
