IPhone app called 'Fishing' displays sizes/ bag limits/ fish species names as well as fishing spots near your current location. Have a look for it on the itunes store. It's logo is a white fish on a red background. I have it and I reckon it has been a pretty good find.

I'd drop the entire reel into a bucket of fresh water until you are ready to begin, just to help slow the salt and corrosion.Disassemble the entire reel, give everything a good scrub in warm soapy water, everything gets a good squirt with Inox, then stick it all back together again, a little reel oil or reel grease on all the moving parts, and give it another good squirt of Inox. It's a freebie anyways, so you lost nothing to give it a go even if it's beyond salvage, it's totally useless if you dont give it a go, and in the process you'll gain a bit of knowledge on how to strip down your good reels for an occasional service and clean. Here's a website which will help with schematics so that you get everything back together in the right place: http://www.reelschematic.com/schematics.htmlAlan Tani is a reel guru, and if you have any problems or questions, the answers will all be found here: http://alantani.com/

wow what a great find. Those rods are as tuff as nails and a really good heavy snapper rod.Use car polish on the rod especially around the reel seat and to get any rust off the eyes if it has any?for me the reel is a throw away item as it needs new line and having pulled a reel that was in better condition than this one out of west lakes one day myself, and even though I stripped it down and serviced it, I had the reel pack it in only six months later. It just got gradually harder and harder to wind until it was no more.if it were me that found it, I would keep the rod and not worry about the reel..but this is just my opinion..great score though!

this is debate of opinions which can and will go on forever and unfortunately run the risk of personalaising it.Ultimatly there s no evidence to either side debate.I feel that is it possible to research, it is a big task and wont get solid results for a few years but if people are calling for a ban of it then start now.Shark patrols which are headed up by volunteers (i use to be one of them) and i can tell you as can any other light plane aviator there are a lot of sharks on the local beaches. The only ones reported at those within a certain distance and size.At least a risk assessment should be done. If an area is prone to large sharks in swim safe areas what about nets etc?Prevention and mitigation is key however recreational shark fishing should not be banned until research is completed and they certainly shoul dnot be targeted. Most of these people are parents themselves and to say that they dont care for children, in my opion quite hurtful. parents chose to parent in different somes, Some keep them out of the water, others educate, others get free reign. If there is such a concern then there are shark shields that can be purchased, after all if people thinking that Screwing up a $1k real on the beach is justifiable to get them off the jetty then so would a $600 shark sheildFYI no mallice or agression meant in this post

I remember fishing the warves around the port and the metro jetties in the late eighties and early nineties when I was in high school. Some of those spots were as rough as guts with dero's punching on and beer bottles being smashed. I reckon I learned a lot about conflict resolution and risk management through those days I also have spent time surfing in QLD and WA. Plenty of times I've sent baits out from the shore at Yallingup (near Margaret River) after surfing in the morning. The two pursuits are not mutually exclusive . And I've seen a lot more tiger sharks out there on my board than I ever hooked  I doubt the majority of people that poo poo shark fishing really have a passion for the salt. And I do mean PASSION. It surprises me that people have mentioned SA surf lifesaving clubs on here, because a lot of the lifesavers in northern NSW and the Gold Coast are also pretty avid fisho's :S Anyone that want to walk up to a shark fisho and get in his face is the wrong doer. Don't forget also that a lot of the guys out on the planks are youngsters they aren't grafitti ing your fence or laying rubber in your street. Nor are they home plotting unspeakable things like good emo kids do. No, they are out waiting for an adrenalin pumping run from a big toothy beast. These kids save their money for some pretty cool gear ( my wife would freak if I came home with a $1000 reel lol) and get out into the outdoors and learn that you have to bloody earn what you get in this world. Call it six months at maccas saving for a good combo, while your mates are on their fat backsides playing xbox, then a week staring at the balloon in the middle of the night.... When them runs come and a bronzie is landed these kids need a pat on the back.... Well :c Done Lads. If you go back to when I was 15 years old and saw a brawl on Henley jetty where a guys lost an ear, then you could ask whether much has changes in 19years???? If it hasn't, then we ought to be asking how we can make our jetties SAFER for young shark fisho's, not making life more difficult for em by spewing out the same old 'sharks gonna eat our kids' crap that is based on nothing more than hysterical public opinion fostered by the discovery channel and great old movies like Jaws!

By the logic of Shark fishing brings the sharks then working from that logic no berlying should be allowed. may sound extreme, but berley brings them in for a feed... then if you berley for your gar/tommies then their prey will come in, then theirs as we get to the sharks....FYI i honestly feel that shark fishing makes no difference to the sharks arrival at beaches. As its been stated so many times. general manners, Shark fishos out, swim elsewhere, swimmer sout, shar fish elsewhere.

Call me nieve, but hasnt shark fishing form jetties been going on for years? and haven't we been sharing the swim/fish areas for years?IS there ANY research in regards to shark/human attacks found to be attributed or even slightly linked to shark fishing.we cant throw as many opinions about as we like, but really its a pointless argument without facts.the increasing aggressiveness of those who oppose is getting ridiculous and could potentially get quite dangerous. For shrak fishos, like previously mentioned, try to steer clear of the abuse etc (hard to bite your tounge) but right now, as they have thrown "Child safety:" into the mix, every man and his activist dog thinks its wrong and will shout and scream. They will do what these occupy protesters are doing, Enticing aggression then miss quoting/filming/editing reactions etc
