mrfish got a reaction from Squid Inc. in Tumby bay
Just a quick report as short on time..
Got onto a few fish while away though not in the numbers we were hoping. we managed some squid, KGW, Yelllowfin whiting, flathead, tommies, snook, trevally and salmon trout.
The Jetty was hit and miss for squid but we usually ended up with between 2-6 per session. Baby tommies were in plague proportions over some of the whiting grounds when we could get out in the boat (which wasn't often thanks to persistent 20 knot winds). The squid were mostly small with the occasional 25cm hood showing up. Threw out a slug on the way through the marina and hooked and lost a very nice snook of around 70+ cm which was entertaining. Also lost what could have been a cracking Yellowfin whiting while using a popper over the flats of ski beach as it straightened two hooks on a brand new lure. Wasn't impressed but provided some fun on a slow day  . Replaced the trebles and managed some salmon trout on the popper on a trip down to coffin bay.
Did some snorkelling at the jetty and saw a good sized morwong and some puffer varieties and some magpie perch but not much around in the way of fish.
Overall a good trip but nothing epic. Beautiful part of the world though.

Southern end of the bay, where the bay curves around and 'peninsulars'  towards Tumby Island. Offers some good protection from southerlies.
Check it out on Google maps. Some really nice structure. Don the waders/wetsuit and go hard. have nfi how the area fires but looks really sexy. Had one session a 18 months back and pulled a nice feed of yfw and flatties on sp.
All else some nice razorfish on a decent low tide.

As Del mentions, 2nd creek. Looked pretty good too.

    my home town,

The local jetty used to be good fishing..   plenty of beaches around too.   Second creek  is not far out. we used to fish and snorkel this area a lot.  Ski beach has some nice land based flicking to be done too.

The marina is holding some decent fish  from what i hear.

Always got Coffin bay, Port Niell, Port Lincoln close by too

Hey Mr Fish funny you should say that got some salmon 4 today at the lake biggest was only 30. Number 5 was slightly bigger i felt it hit felt like it was gone almost landed it spat the bottom trebles. When I looked at the double clutch afterwards bottom trebles intact Top ones all gone just the shaft ( sorry couldn't think of a better word ) left. I should've gotten more number 1 I got at 6.15 then by 6.50 I was going to change the lure I didn't get time the water just went on the boil and birds went off was insane and fun
Double clutch hooks are crap imho

    Hi Mickey,
Have seen some good sized salmon coming out of west lakes (45cm+) in the last week. I know you fish there often too so maybe stick with westlakes for a while.

Sorry guys, we've had some urgent issues with some of our largest clients this week so I've been flat out all week at work.
It looks like you guys have put in some great work there RJ in terms of rec fishing representation for rec fishers.
I kind of think we need to be looking at making a real peak body for rec fishing and the rec fishing industry. I believe our position is undermined by the fact that the commercial sector is regarded as more important than rec fishing as they are an industry while we are just hobby fishers exercising our hobby and not really creating any economic value to the state. I believe we need a peak rec fishing body which represents rec fishers and fishing clubs but also the rec fishing industry, i.e. the bait/tackle/boat stores, caravan parks/motels/holiday house owners and regional business councils.
I'll try and find some time to knock up a bit of a diagram of how I believe it would be structured over the weekend.
I think we are at a critical time where if rec fishers stay divided rec fishing in this state will be dead but if we can unite and try to understand each others positions and compromises to work together we can ensure the future of rec fishing and hopefully improve it vastly.

    With respect AD,
To achieve any outcome at all, the place to do that would be in the yet-to-be-created Fisheries Council - not social media - and in order to achieve a good outcome for rec's, the arguments put to that overriding Council by our representative(s) will need to be 100% valid, supported by facts and (somehow) agreed by the majority of recs's.
With the election of a new Government the entire face of fishing politics in SA has changed, and we need to change with it. There is no place for continued attacks between members of the rec fishing community. Different points of view should result in respectful discussion and eventual compromise, not short term point scoring.
May be worth remembering that every person who becomes seriously involved in rec fishing representation in this State is a volunteer *, and we will need them all if we're going to progress. There really aren't that many - never has been.
I believe that we have from now until the official formation of the Recreational Fishing Council to get our act together, else the current divisions between our existing organisations will simply be carried into the business of that Council - to the detriment of the entire SA rec community.
Right now the primary focus of our existing organisations should be on overall organisation of the SA rec sector, not individual fishing issues (KGW, SBT etc). We get one chance to get the foundations right.
    Cheers,
    RJ
    * For about 40 years, the only paid rec fishing representatives in SA have been the successive Executive Officers of SARFAC/RFSA.

    Hi Aussie Dave,
Love your posts this year so please don't take this as an attack on your views which I believe you are more than entitled to have. But I would like to step in here just to highlight that not all rec fishers fully support the ideals of SAFA etc.
While I don't think SA has the optimal rec fishing representation currently I am very cautious about supporting rec fishing bodies like SAFA. My caution comes from some of the material I read from their site which is clearly wrong or demonstrates a lack of ecological understanding.
A bit about me, I am not aligned with any particular rec fishing body - I follow all of them as I believe they are united in the overarching goal to make rec fishing better and fairer, so in that they all have my support. I am a keen recfisherman since forever, I also have a PhD in Aquatic ecology and spend a great deal of my time learning about fish biology/physiology and about our aquatic ecosystems.
So in saying this I do support recfish SA's stance on marine parks and am glad we have them - whether they are in the correct places is outside the scope of this post to debate so let’s just leave that there.
I am happy with the 20 blue crab limit for recs – I am not happy about the pro situation
I do not support the commercial export of KGW (who can afford to buy local whiting??) and think the bag limit for recs is very low. But I am happy to cop it on the chin if it means stock replenishment.
I was not fussed by the recent cuts to rec bag limits and think that some are still way too high. Boats limits of 30 for flathead (we don’t even have a flathead fishery in SA) and bream are ridiculous and show a total lack of knowledge about rec fishing from PIRSA (imagine we all went and ripped 30 big bream out of the Port on a weekly basis). The population of people keeps growing therefore the bag and boat limits can only keep decreasing if we are to remain sustainable. More thought needs to be given towards the sustainability of commercial fisheries given the small percentage of people these industries represent when compared to the increase in general population and the economic contributions rec fishers make. In that I do agree with SAFA as I believe I have read similar on their site before.
So that’s all from me I hope people read this in the respectful tone it was intended. Keep fighting the good fight. We’ll get there eventually.
    Peace

I've double hot smoked it, 2 to 2.5 times as long as I would normally, and that dries it right out with a beautiful strong smoke flavour. Lasts about 4 days unrefrigerated but wouldn't trust it at all past a week.

My mate was running late, I was already in my spot of choice, I got 8 fish in 12 casts while he was walking up to me LOL I knew the bite would slow as soon as he got there and it did..pays to be on time haha

What an exciting time , the OzFish Onk Habitat group have been making great headway in the restoration of habitat in the Onkaparinga river . We have finished stage one which was to deploy Limestone blocks into the Onk to place some substrate for small critters to attach to and hide around . These living critters such as oysters , barnacles and small crustaceans will in turn encourage bigger critters to congregate in the area . The placement of these blocks also should help the tides that flow over them to scour more of the sediment from the bottom of the river in an aid to make a deeper hole in the area for even bigger critters to hide and congregate .  As you can see in the scans the placement of the blocks are near a natural limestone outcropping for them to compliment and as there was 2 deployments , the first deployment has already encouraged some sediment displacement right after the outcropping . A big and massive thanks to all the volunteers that have been taking time out from there lives to come to meetings and the organising make this achievement . We have some more projects in the pipeline and if you care to be a volunteer , we are always grateful for more helping hands .

Not sure if we'll get any this year, but with a moth of Winter still to go anything can happen down here in Tassie..

I personally wouldn't use a swivel when fishing plastics but you can try and see if the plastic swims ok. If the plastic stays straight and doesn't roll around it should be ok. Otherwise you're going to have to learn a leader knot of sorts I'm afraid Uni to uni is probably the simplest (well its the only one ive mastered anyway, I hate knots too )  the clips you show will probably work too, but again just check how your plastic swims/sinks etc.

From my experience redfin, flathead and salmon dont care if you use a clip and the action of the plastic is still good. Have caught bream using clips too, but whether i would have caught more without using a clip....i haven't tested that
