negrukyThis is a grey area at the moment and, by inference, subject to enforcement discretion depending on whether they think you are full of BS or not.And it is exactly why Item #2 of Restriction Hours is in the MFA draft paper that RJ posted tonight on the Metro Sharking Restrictions thread; It is strongly advised that a definitive statement is included in any review of the current restrictions to the effect that fishers who are still in the process of angling a hooked shark at the 5:00am deadline will not be liable for an offence under the Fisheries Act if all other aspects of the capture are legal.Cutting 300 metres of line would probably not be the best environmental move, which only leaves one option.Jacintha and Mortimer walking their keeshonds along Grange beach at 6.30am on a Wednesday morning enroute to their local breakfast cafe will just have to cope with the affronting spectacle of someone...dear lord, oh my goodness... fishing...

I don't really want to start a 'war' by posting either but I've gotta put my opinion on the table on this topic as well.I understand the community concerns that it can be perceived as dangerous but I'd argue that the 100+ years of shark fishing history off the Adelaide metro coastline entirely negates any concerns of apparent danger. If it is as dangerous as people claim then why have we seen zero shark attacks which are directly attributable to people fishing for sharks?? In 100+ years? I've struggled to even find one incident in any state in Australia. This should put to rest any fears anyone has about fishing related shark attacks in Australia. Reading this shows that almost every attack is related to either surfing' date=' diving or snorkelling and usually well away from non-surf beaches and beaches lacking reef structure. I also note that we haven't banned any of those activities.I hardly think a Bronzie with a hook in his mouth is in any position to think about what's he's having for lunch. Since most sharks are opportunistic feeders, it stands to reason that they would take a fresh dead bait presented by an angler [i']before[/i] taking a human as it represents a much easier feed for a shark. The simple realities of the situation are that the sharks are already in the water with the swimmers. Fishing for them does not attract them nor make them more likely to attack a person. History has proven this to be the case beyond all reasonable doubt.Yes it does happen to be the law now but from my point of view it's a law which is not backed by any evidence or science and it has been put in place simply because of the perceived danger, which is not really good enough IMO. There's a perceived danger that I might get attacked by a dog on the way home, but we haven't banned all dog ownership. Maybe we should, considering there were 6000 dog attacks between 2001 - 2003 alone which required hospitalization. More than seven times the total amount of shark attacks ever recorded in Australia.

A mate and I headed up towards Pelican point last night for a squirt on our enduro bikes to have a look around and we were surprised that the old dirt road next to the Submarine base was reopened! Seems like the local council have even built a little shade area and hopefully it won't get vandalised and they shut it off again. Just up the road was another open road back to the area closer to Pelican point. I'm not sure if the gate is closed at night for this spot but I'm happy that places have been reopened because we used to spend many hours throwing lures around for ST's there. Hopefully everyone respects these areas so the local councils will have no second thoughts on reopening some more areas that have been lost to LB fishermen. Mick.

This is what can happen if you latch on to a big one on eggy tackle by accident off the beach , not pretty, had this exact thing happen to me at butlers beach a few years ago.

Ok - Ill tell you this little fishing story and let you decide:Bob's kitchen - N.E. about 5 knots - hot / overcast / offshore - not much swell - clearish water.....Spotted a great hole accompanied to a break in the second sandbar so I lobbed a fresh s/t right on the edge of the sandbar and waited - and waited....20 or so minutes then started walking away fom my rod....I was about 20 feet away from it (walking away) when my rod tip just moved a bit and then snapped back to nothing again....i stopped and watched - nothing - started walking away again and again - just a small movement (a pull foreward) then it let go again....I pulled my line in and the s/t was chewed to bits - and almost gone.....I replaced it and threw it in the same spot again.....Waited ---- waited ------then walked away ------same thing! straight away! soon as I walked away - the rod tip just moved.....What the!!!!!Pulled my line in again - and this time the s/t was chewed but it had the teeth marks of a good sized jewy so it was on......The next cast i did the same thing - waited for a little while (10 mins) but this time when I walked away I loosened my drag so when i walked away I took the line with me - rod in the rod holder but as I walked off I had the line coming off the reel and coming with me keeping the line tight - same same - 20 odd feet away the tip started flicking - I yanked the line and all hell broke loose! -------- so the point is - this fish was watching me!!! They arent that dumb.....That changed the way I fished up there - from that moment on I went stealth - and caught a helluva lot more fish.....I cut out all the un natural aspects of my presence there eg. noise / smell / (i washed my hands in the sand and salt before baiting up) fresh bait / (fresh dead) livies dont seem to work - and kept away from my rod and sat closer up near the sandhill....And caught more fish!!Sorry about the quality of the photo but this was a long time ago and it was the days before digital - this is the fish and you can see the conditions - still this fish was watching me - it was aware of my presence there......Even though its a long way from nowhere to catch fish you still have to follow the basics of jewie fishing....(if you want to catch fish)....

i would say head first as thats usually where the squid will go for the back of the head but sometimes come in from the side only drawback is the head sometimes gets in the way of the barbs making it ineffective

Quotas, quotas quotas, everybody is talking about quotas. Lets just forget about quotas for a minute and think about who is going to catch what and who is going to make all the money out of this.If there is such a big market out there for our fish why in the hell arent the australian fishing boats going for it.Whats wrong with our boats that they cant or wont go after such a lucrative market, they did with the TUNA and they did with ROCK LOBSTER,why in the hell cant they do it with the mackeral and the redbait. If our boats decided to go after these species, and market them o,seas then the money goes into AUSTRALIAN pockets instead of OVERSEAS POCKETS and there would be a far greater control over catches by people who do give a damn about our fisheries and where it is going and its sustainabilty .

Bit sad to hear that Ranger,( wish u well and happiness in your new endevors) but i have noticed i too fish bugger all these last few years , i think its the lazyness and pc that have contributed to the slackness in fishing, politics too, all the little factors contribute just like when ur fishing .Between family stuff , work , motivation, and trying to arrange to go fish with a buddy or 2 seems to be impossible these days to get out there and im talkin landbased. Hopefully i will get to fish more than 12 times this summer. If the rules allow that is !

I've just been advised that there is a large sign right before the roundabout on Lady Gowrie drive that details the plan on what is happening down at Outer Harbour. Apparently playgrounds, BBQ's an extension of the wharf and possibly a new boat ramp. I don't think the boat ramp is detailed on the sign as yet which is why it is still a rumour.
