Evening all,IMO too many people with very low post counts join up to sites like this one purely for what they think they can get. I`m always willing to help people that are willing to reciprocate/share. Think you`d do a lot better to contribute something to the site before you start asking for stuff, then ppl get to see you`re willing to put some effort in,after a while you could offer to swap some spots with other members. This will likely draw a much better response than what you`re currently getting. Suggest anyone with little or no knowledge head into a tackle shop & buy any one of the readily available books containing gps marks from all over SA as a starting point. Personally, I hate being used up, and have spent a lot of time, money & effort for my fifty years of acquired fishing knowledge & it won`t/doesn`t get handed out willy nilly to anyone not willing to make an effort to help themselves. I reckon the help offered was more than generous, & the bagging then given to members was unjustified & uncalled for rubbish. Needless to say I won`t ever offer to help you with an attitude like the one displayed in this post. Cheers

i look at it this way, i could still catch bream on a cheap arse rod and reel for a $100 bucks but because its my thing, I prefer the luxury of using expensive equipment for bream and enjoy the hassle free fishing. So whether its bream, sharks, mulloway or squid use whatever makes you feel happy and not what other people think... cheers snake

Up North in the gulfs, for some reason, they call Yellow Fin Whiting "Silvers"I am guessing that is what Wadey is referring too. And not the smaller species of Silver Whiting that you get out in the gulf.

I think you will find the gates at West Lakes are operated by DETI. The level has to be maintained Too low and some of the concrete structures around the perimeter will be adversely affected Too high and the problem is obvious. West Lakes carries a lot of storm water A lot of storm water enters from behind the tin fence at Trimmer Parade end a lot enters from somewhere near the rowing club at the other end. At times of big rains the gates are just left open to allow storm water to escape At other times the level is monitored using the incoming or outgoing tide and gates at each end. All this makes it almost impossible to predict the position of the gates unless you contact DETI

was a pretty lean summer for me and because all my fishing is landbased had to work hard for minimal catches, but the highlights were definatly the whiting on poppers had some great sucess on these tasty little morsals and didnt spend a cent on baits etc. just 1 lure used the whole summer!! cheers snake p.s. congrats on your efforts though jack u did pretty well mate

How did everyones summer go.... What were the highlights ??????Well.... It's taken me a while to admit it... I've ignored the calendar for long enough....Summer has gone :(I fished all winter last year and will do it all again in a coupla months. But for now, I'm looking forward to those curious mixed bags that the transition months give us. I reckon I had a great summer. It was nearly all metro... And a high percentage of landbased stuff nowthe boats gone... But great none the less.Got some nice early season Snapper...Caught a big Salmon that I think was just a GIANT fat salmon trout that forgot to migrate. Found some yellowfin whiting and had a good year on the warm water bream. My highlights would definately be;-the metro trip out to the 20m mark when our hastily put together shark rig landed my mate a 6ft hammerhead.-landing a over 60 snapper in 8m of water-and of course finally landing a legal mulloway after wasting a third of my summer chasing one

hey jack your time will come and all those hours chasing that elusive ghost will be forgotten!! My start to catching a mulloway was a once in a lifetime experience not many people would have even dreamed possible!! It all came down to one thing and that is the great friendship i established with a true fishing legend "Dave Sheldon" who is the father of aarron who started this web site and locally known through the fishing store fraternity as the maggot man!! He took me under his wing many years ago when fishing to me was an obsession but slowly losing its charm with countless fishless sessions taking its toll. He decided to invite me on a mulloway fishing trip to a place only he and a couple of other awesome fishing mates new about which nearly ended up in a fallout between them and him when they heard i was invited. Anyway we arrived at hot spot and he dedicated most of his time teaching me how to rig, bait and understand the little things needed to be successfull in catching fish consistently and with new found knowledge and confidence we chucked in our lines and it wasnt long before he pulled in the first fish of the night around 20lb which totally blew me away at seeing my first ever mulloway!! within ten minutes he bagged a similar size fish and the utter excitment i felt at the chance of me catching one was unbelievable!! well nothing happened for the next 4 hours so dave decided to crash for awhile but there was no chance for me sleeping and i dedicated my self to work hard on baiting up how he showed me and constantly rebaiting and berley and generally not get lazy to give me every chance possible to catch my first ever mully!! well it was a bizzare feeling when i saw that rod double over and took a while to register but i striked it how he told me and i was on to the biggest fish i had ever hooked in my life, my heart was pounding and i was screaming out to dave but he wouldnt wake up!!! anyway after 10 minutes of total heart pounding fishing the experience turned into a nightmare when suddenly and so close too shore the line went slack, the hook had pulled and the feeling was utterly devistating as i stood there for what felt like an eternity trying to get to grips of my lost opportunity. man that sucked!! well i let dave sleep and put on a new bait of squid and cast it out feeling totally defeated as the sun started too dawn when i noticed a couple of small taps on the rod, thinking it was a little tommy attacking my bait i decided to give it a couple more taps and striked hard to something solid which instantly took off and to say i wasnt a little surprised was an understatement of worldly proportions!! i stayed surprisingly calm and played this fish like a seasoned pro i didnt call out to dave until i landed this fish and it was safely on the sand and at a respectful 35 pounds i was the happiest fisherman alive, to catch this fish on my very first mully sesh was a totally awesome experience and was the start of a unbelievable run of consistant catches of mulloway to 60lb on close to 4 trips in a row which even had dave lost for words!!! my tip jack, dont waste your time on metro mullies hit the road and fish those beaches further away and you might just crack that 50lber sooner than u think!! p.s. this was a yorkes beach no need to travel far west coast hope u enjoyed my story

Measure your finger nail in the pic, then see how many times it goes the length of the snapper than measure the actual width of your nail and times it by how many times it fits in the photo, gives you a rough idea on its length

This is another example of where officers would use their discretion and when used like this, as a 'landing net', if you will, not baited, it should be ok. As long as it is not left in the water nor used to actually 'catch' the fish / crabs.Troy.
