I had a problem with my 2010 Dogfight that wasn't related to the mag seal but to the wrong grease in the anti-reverse clutch. Repaired under warranty.

The dogfight has been brilliant since then and I can't fault it. It has been smashed around a fair bit and caught some decent fish. I have got a 2015 5500 Expedition that is yet to get a workout but will soon.

The lack of magseal oil might be a pain for some but sending the reel away ever few years or so for a Daiwa service doesn't bother me too much seeing as how I have never cracked a spinning reel open gearbox/rotor wise. How many people service their own reels to this degree? I'll pull my overheads apart no worries but they are just a glorified winch.

Saying all this I think as Daiwa goes more and more magseal they will have to trust a greater amount of agents to service these reels. And I think the whole idea of magseal is to remove servicing requirements as all they need is a quick rinse less those non magseal bearings. Time will tell but I won't be selling mine just yet.

Found by a mate in the water at Port Norlunga. Fairly rare and described in my book as a 'superlative food fish'. Never seen or heard of one of these before this. It had been dead for a bit so the colour has faded

Not a growth. Other fishes had been snacking on the gills and they were pulled out.

I'd never heard or seen of the thing before. Thought this one might take awhile. You chaps ever seen one in the flesh before?

Apparently they like to travel with Tuna schools and can get up to 2m long.

I have a few Terezs' and like them. I don't recommend them anymore because of the haters!   If I was to have a dedicated off the rocks/jetty rod for casting it would be a Terez due to how robust the heavy versions are.

Swedish made ABU, definitely. I have a chinese made 9000 and it has been surprising good. Had a chinese made 7000 and what a piece of crap. Threw it away.

USA made Penns. The Chinese made versions are absolute crap. Had the anti reverse break on a 9500 version. They are crap, crap, crap.

I miss a Fenwick glass boat rod I had. It was rated at 20 lb but you could catch KGW on it all day and then catch 25lb snapper on it no worries. Original Sabre blanks I miss as well.

Nice explanation Rod. Absolutely correct,  the final stage fingers are like a sharpening steel & do re-align the edge. No guessing of angles like with an ordinary steel though. Have been using this system for close to 2 decades now & you`d never know from looking at my knives that they are not brand new/good as the day they were made. Definitely no degradation from "scraping". I have several brands of filleting knives as well as my bone - handled knives, (Marttini, Kershaw, F. Dick & sons from Germany,Scanpan,Buck, Mundial, Furi). Some I bought, some I inherited, all different blade lengths/shapes to suit different applications, horses for courses so to speak. All are sharpened on the Furi sharpening system & all of `em are razor sharp, & it`s so easy to keep `em that way. As Rod said, I too found the Furi system a little slow when starting from scratch with a bone handled butter knife so that is why I resorted to the method I described previously using my Dremel & the tungsten carbide "v" block pocket sharpener to put the edge on the bone handled knives. I have also shaped some of my bone-handled knives with a point & done away with the rounded end. This was done on a linishing belt not with a grinder, as was pointed out by Brenton, if you use a grinder the steel may become red hot, making it brittle & prone to rusting, effectively it is no longer "stainless" .

    Cheers ppl.

Some do, I have a pull through on the boat with 3 stages, tungsten (the scraping one) ceramic (I spose this scrapes to?) and diamond
It's not bad but nothing like the furi which never scrapes
Think of it more as 2 diamond stones that have the correct angle
Mind you, as Jaffa advised previously, you end up just using the stainless fingers for the majority of the time, which works like a steel but in a precise way not the random angles of hand held use, this process re-aligns the microsopic filiments of the edge

I know you don't think so now but I seriously doubt you'll bother with the Lansky again, once you use it to get your intial angle, the furi is good for your best knives, all the precision you need in a fraction of the time LOL sounds like a sales pitch
Enough from me I'm starting to rave on
    Cheers

    G'day
I have used all sorts of methods to sharpen knives and woodworking machines and tools
A couple of years ago retired pro fisho and forum member Jaffa posted about the furi system, how quick, easy and effective it is
The only issue I had was getting all my knives to the initial angle, this was taking to long even with the course stage so I cut a small wedge and used a stone to do this step,  Once done the speed, ease and result is very hard to beat
It takes about 5 secs to revive the edge in normal use

BCF have one under their inhouse Rogue brand, but there are a few based on the same design. They are a rectangular block with 3 different graded surfaces from course to smooth. More designed for keeping an edge rather than for creating one.

No worries. To be honest, at the risk of repeating as well, I do use the willy weather graphs up here in the NT as most of the ramps are only usable at a certain height of tide. If the tide data is right the graphs are usually accruate to 30 mins either side. Worst case was an hour later which put me retrieving in the dark. I always have a hard copy from the BOM website as well adjusted for the spot I'm fishing. I extract them from the BOM into excel and then add/subract to get the right tides.

Why would you bother to go to any other site rather than the BOM for tides? Every other site gets their tides from the BOM. When you look at sites such as willy weather all you are getting is the BOM data and any finger faults that they may have made. And I have found they make all sorts of errors. There was another tide thread where I posted examples of willy weather mistakes.  From willy weather:

I have had maui jims now for at least 12 years, maybe about a dozen pair. I always have a set with amber lenses for cloudy glary days and the grey lenses for bright days. I get the sport versions as they are light and stay on your nogging when you lean over. Before maui's it was Mako's for at least 5 pair. They are brilliant as well but the glass lenses make them heavy so a neck strap is a good investment as they do wnat to slide off when you look down. I found that they both are fairly scratch resistant and I usually destroy them completely before they get too scratched. I wait until I go overseas or the the US and buy a few pair on the cheap, although that is getting harder now.

How do I know I have been wearing them for at least 12 years? My wedding trip in 2003 wearing maui's.

The best advice I have ever seen or been given is regardless of the knot learn to tie it well and lubricate when tightening. Then test it before trying to catch a fish on it.

Even though with braid I sweat over making my biminis and yucatan/bristol knots perfect with medium/heavy line even if I tied a spider hitch for a double the way I fish I would not come near to breaking that knot - if I tied it carefully and correctly. I lose fish for a variety of reasons but hate it when you now you did something shoddy. I think most of my fish lost recently is not checking snap swivels correctly, lost some good lures and fish the way.

    Heavy stuff I've been using

    Bimini>Ducknose>Leader>Solid ring>Hook trace

    Light stuff

    Braid>Albright>6ft mono>swivel>hook trace

Sinker always running above the swivel but on mono as opposed to braid as I'm paranoid
