Lucky bugger, 2/0 should be fine mate, I use 2/0 heads on redfin at times and if anything it gives a better hook up rate

fished out reacted to plankton in Line Capacity
The capacities are based on an average diameter for each line (mono) and are usually fairly accurate. If you look at a company's website they sometimes give some capacities for braid as well. I have found that whatever lb test the reel will take 200yd of, it will hold 300yd of the same lb test in braid, so most 2500 reels hold about 200yd of 6 lb mono and will therefore take 300yd of 6lb braid.

For Samsons and Kings I use a Saltiga deep 55S spin rod with a Stella 8000FA running 80lb Tufline and Saltiga Hiramasa 63S spin rod with a Stella 5000SW rod running 50lb Tufline. Originally had the 8000FA on the Hiramasa running 50lb Tufline and it handled Samsons to 30kg west of Greenley Island no problems. I use the 55S with the 8000FA and custom Challenger 15kg overhead rod with a Shimano TLD 20 running 30lb braid trolling for tuna. The Hiramasa and 5000SW is also a wicked bottom bouncing rig that is my first choice for any deep sea work. Picked up some of these rods and reels second hand for way less than retail. I use leaders of around 80 -100lb for jigging, usually Pen 10X or Jinkai via an FG knot. All split rings and hooks are upgrades from what the jigs and lures are sold with. Its worth saving a few more bucks and sticking with the tried and proven brands for heavy work and you won't be disappointed.

Was thinking of making a thread like this, purely on tuna myself. I use a TLD20A two speed, with a Shimano Taipan 15-24kg. I run 80lb Berkley PE Maxx on it (put on originally for coffins kings. Over kill I know, but can't afford to change it for now. I'd rather get lures...) I also run a Shimano Baitrunner B 6500 on a 10 kg glass rod. Dad will run the 16000 Salina with 50lb braid and a 30kg Salina jig rod, which he easily knocked over his first tuna with, a nice 25kg fish last week. We then have a crap 'Penn GT special' with an even crapper JW fully rollered rod. The last outfit is a Abu 7000 Sweedish made on a Penn Sports rod as shotgun and 500m of braid- our biggest fish catcher so far, with up to 18kg fish. This thing has been amazing for us!The 25kg fishThe 18kg fish

Alex, have you seen Adam Royters Video? They are very helpful for using the 3B range of lures and will give you the rod action you need for that lure. Straight through mono or a very long/Greased leader is good for the walkers, they sit very low on the pause so a line that floats is best.I fish with the Scum Dogs a lot late summer time, the Mongrel is a great colour as well.

Great Right up Shimsman! Very good basic guide for the majority of people who go land based fishing.1 thing I would like to add is that, in shallow water/Calm Beaches no sinker is required. A burley spring full of burley used as casting weight which gets dragged every 10 or 15 seconds is killer on whiting, Mullet and Tommies!

Over the course of the last 2 weeks (School Holidays) we have caught 48 Carp from the Goolwa Area. All carp were caught during 4, 2 to 3 hour sessions.Gear Used included: A Shimano Catana/Sienna 2-4kg combo, Shimano Siedo with 2-4kg Shimano RTS ($30 Kmart), Abu Sonic Stix 2-4kg with cheapest Shimano Rear Drag reel and an Abu Muscle tip 3-6kg with an Abu cardinal Reel.Lines used were all either 8 or 10 Pound Mono. Biggest carp landed went 73cm and 6kg with another 4 weighing in at 4kg-5kg. We had one cracker session in which we pulled 20 carp in 2 hours. We went to check out a little jetty some 50 meters away and by the time the two of us had got back my line was tight and his rod was going off. My fish was decent (3kg ish) and on a very sticky drag it took almost 5 minutes. On the other hand the 3-6kg knocked over a little 30cm carp in no time. Luckily for my other rod it did because the moment it hit the bank my other rod went off, so I let him take it and land another 2kg carp.A good holidays fishing.

Slaying the fish down there! It is certainly running a lot clearer than my local walk to.The nymph and dry, do you just let them go with the current or twitch and squiggle to give it a little movement?

Lee is the best presenter I have seen, very down to earth. The thing with the other hosts, I think it comes down to personalities. They need to be a bit showy and do "Funny" Things as when Paul Worsteling was at the boat show he said something like "70% of our viewers don't fish".I think because they have to be "Show Ponys" once you have seen the same Tail wave or the phrase "Wrong Town" over 10 times, it's terrible.

very light, sensative and an excellent cast. I liked the 1-4kg rod so much i got the 4-7kg rod and put a 2500 shimano baitrunner on it for live baiting in the lake. only thing i dislike about the rod is the casting butt length, being a short bloke i find it annoying having the rod butt pressed right up against me. good rod if you're above 6ft high or have long arms.

fished out got a reaction from Poppa Snake in Anyone know of a decent combo that will cost about 100 bucks?
Siennas are good for the money but like Pauly S I think the Symetre is the best reel I have. It is a delight to use and is so freakishly light/smooth. My mate fishes with a Catana/Sienna combo and it is easily sufficient for what you want it to do.

fished out reacted to Des in Winter Yellow Fin Whiting Log
Noting a few recent posts enquiring after Yellow Fin Whiting, I thought I would put up some general info regarding a species I have obsessed over for a while, along with a part log for this winter so far.Yellow Fin Whiting are available all year round. There are independent resident populations in the St Vincent Gulf, Spencer Gulf and in WA from Albany through to Shark Bay.The is no migration between populations.Yellow Fin Whiting follow the COLD WATER. At various times of the year you will find them in the part of the gulf that have their natural habitat, but were the water is COLDEST. So I track them all year round, up and down the gulf following the water temperature.By the start of April they would have disappeared from the Adelaide beaches and moved north. This catch was at the end of April in a "middle" part of the gulf. Flathead are a nice by catch, but disappear along with the baitfish when the water gets too cold. However Yellow Fin whiting are still found in the cool water shallows. I manage regular catches through May and June. But it is the Bloodworm runs that really concentrate their numbers into the shallows. And it is then that the better size fish are more abundant. This catch was in the middle of the July bloodworm run.Another bag at the end of JulyThis bag in the middle of the August Bloodworm runAnd I recently managed to find a day with light winds! Which resulted in this bag.Now it is not just us recreational fishers that get stuck into the Yellow Fin Whiting in winter. The graph below from a study in 2000 shows the large majority of the professional catch taken in winter months.Cheers Des

Aussie Salmon. So many ways o fish for them, so many different fights they can give. You can make the fishing as frantic or as laid back as you like. High speed poppers, Metals, Soft Plastics and Baits all work.
