The Dutch-owned super trawler that will be used by Seafish Tasmania is thought to be arriving in less than two weeks' date=' despite widespread opposition from fishermen and environmentalists across the state, the Launceston Examiner reported. Speaking in Hobart on Saturday, Mr Burke said[b'] large takes of fish from one area by large vessels such as the FV Margiris was a legitimate possibility[/b]. Premier Lara Giddings deflected state government responsibility. "This is an issue that is the responsibility of the Australian government and not one that's within Tasmania's ambit," Ms Giddings said. "This boat will not be fishing in Tasmanian waters but it will be fishing within a wide expanse of Australian waters." Mr Burke said the main focus should now be on the number of fish caught, and not the size of the boat. "With this particular vessel there can be an added complication with the issue of large takes in a very localised area," Mr Burke said. "It is important that that aspect of the science be brought into play and that's something that I'm sure AFMA [the Australian Fisheries Management Authority] will be taking account of." North-West recreational fisherman and protest organiser John Edwards said frustration over government inaction was mounting. Mr Edwards described support in AFMA's science as "blind faith". "We find it absolutely extraordinary with some of the evidence coming to light in recent weeks, particularly in relation to the science that AFMA has based the TAC on having been found by Dr Andrew Wadley to be basically a complete fabrication," Mr Edwards said. He said it was highly likely that a protest on Devonport's Mersey River would be organised. Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, who attended the rally in Hobart, said the support was remarkable. "The government admitted that there has not been scientific research done for the last eight years," Mr Whish-Wilson said. "It should show some leadership and be the one responsible for putting in place the research." Nothing unusual about that report. I've caught squid on various different types of lures intended for fish and not squid, had them attack paternoster rigs with cockle as bait while whiting fishing and even had them attacking floats. When they're hungry, and particularly when there is a few of them in the water, they will attack anything that moves, even if it is floating on the surface.

have caught plenty of squid while trolling for snook at a reasonable rate of speed. Have even caught them with a metal slug while chasing salmon of the beach. hey will attack just about anything

Pfft... i was squidding off a jetty & 1 grabbed my teaser, we brouht him in nice & slow but he was a biggy, so we dropped in the crab net & then the squid lure, pulled out the teaser & he went straight for the the orange floaty thing that holds the rope up above the rings. Pulled up the net, job done!

understand all the above "freak" occurances, but lets admit it, most of the time we have to use the proven techniques, and there is even times when even a $40 top of the range jig wont get them to hit.squid = quick and easy feed / bait catching excercise, IMHO, it gets over thought way to often!!again, Ive seen pros clean up using $5 jigs and handlines, dont fathom how people spend $30 on a jig then get purpose built EGI outfits for them, its crazy!! They are just sacks of seaweed with th eod lunge when bringing them in!!

I understand what you're saying Ale, but my point was it's not unusual to catch squid on another lure intended for something else. The way I read that story in the link, to me wasn't suggesting the author was planning on targeting squid using poppers from now on, he was merely saying he's caught a few using poppers - which to me isn't overly surprising considering where he's fishing (shallow weed beds).

The lure in the first post is a Slavko Buggood on Cod I believe, some of them are fairly valuable.

once i was casting nice size harbodys at woolbay coz there were a school of salmon getting around. as i brang it to the jetty this squid was bookin for it, grabbed it but didnt hookup. got the lure out the water and as soon as my father put his squid jag in it smashed it

Honestly what next,surely catching things on normal methods cant be that mundane that some fishing journalist has got to be some kind of tossbag trailblazer and come up with some fandangled garbage to get a few readers . :ohmy:

seen it happen before right before my eyes... alot more effective on the finiky squid at night in shallow water thats for sure Sebile splasher the way to go....

I guess theoretically it can happen occassionally but I reckon it would be a complete waste of time if u specifically targeted them like that. I will stick with the yamashitas any day.Thanks for sharing though. Interesting read.
