This comp is dependent on good salmon reports from members who would like to take part so please get as much information in your reports, try to take some nice clear photos and get right into the Strike Hook spirit and get as many fishos as we can chasing salmon for the comp.

The comp ends on August 31st 2016 and is open to anyone and everyone in South Australia!

    Good luck everyone

They will never get rid of carp......
Or cane toads, or rabbits or foxes.
Introducing a virus might make a dent in the populations of carp, but it won't get them all.
Keep stocking as many native fish as possible, best solution I see to diminish carp numbers.
After all, it wasn't carp that drastically affected cod stocks in the River Murray, it was overfishing from humans.
Return the native fish to population levels that they were before carp arrived, and I see them balancing the equation and even out-competing carp for food.

    Hi all,

Thought I might share this with you all , as some of us are a bit short of money , and this little project cost me nothing, as I had some pvc pipe in the shed ( old beach rod holders ) , a hand full of rivets , and some galvanized strapping . The reason I made these is that , originally  I wanted the stainless steel rod holders , to hold 3 rods , 3 rods port side and 3 rods starboard , at the time all these were sold out and being impatient I opted for the other ones in the shop (BCF ) , the plastic type jobbies , they were a bit cheap looking , but I was going on a snapper mission that day , so grabbed them $37.50 each I think .

Anyway I tried them that day and was not impressed , moving left to right , and not a firm fit in the boat , so after that day thought I would take them back , for a refund .

Well they stayed in the shed for a month , and I thought I would muck around with them , to see if I could ,get them to do a decent job .

After a good few hours of cutting and shutting , still no good , ( good on me stuffed up the idea of taking them back derrrrrrrrrrr ) .

So threw them in the shed a forgot about them as I was not happy . I still wanted some rod holders , so thinking cap on , came up with these little jobbies , they might not last , but they sit firm as , don't move side to side and believe it or not they are strong , being reinforced on the underside with some strapping .

    Pics attached .

Anyway it kept me busy for some time and I am happy as.....CHEERS

So with the change we had the other day and checking the radar there was signs of lightning that could be heading through Adelaide. I checked the radar after I finished work and saw that most of the lightning was down the south coast, So i didn't worry about it.

Then i get a message from my mate to get down the beach as the lightning was coming. SO raced off to Porties and met up with him. By the time I got there it was gone and my mate left, i thought id hang around to see if anymore was on it's way.

I am glad i stayed! Even though I waited and sat through the periods inbetween flashes which was nearly 4 hours and not having my remote on me to use bulb mode for long exposures. I managed to come up with these 3 crackers.

Now bare in mind that there has been no editing or photoshop, this is how it came straight off the camera! Im pretty impressed with how they turned out.

    Hope you enjoy.

A $50 fishing rod, will still catch the same fish as a $500 fishing rod.

Not as weird as it may sound regarding lighting/static electricity, there is a guy i know that madly fished when an electrical storm was on,didnt pack up and leave, but when 30 metres of line he had out ,completely lifted out the water and gravitated  6 foot off the surface decided to wind in like hell and get the heck outta there...true story.

Wasn't fishing, but in the boat in  the north arm port river when i was doing some research for my PhD. Just motoring along at a fairly slow place when i hear this weird sound, 'cheee ewe' kinda laser sound, or a bit like when you flick the wire on a long tight fence and it makes that kinda laser gun star wars sound (very hard to describe) Any way i turned around to see a splash about a meter behind the boat that looked like it originated under the water but it was a very vertical stream of water about 4ft high and maybe 20-30cm diameter. My first thought was sh!t ive popped a dolphin!!!! ha ha Dont ask me why but it was a weird sound and i had no idea what it was. Thinking about it and i can only come up with two explanations 1) it was a lightning strike but it wasnt really stormy weather, or 2) something relatively small hit the water at an intense speed like it was dropped from a plane or space or i dont know. Still freaks me out that i could have been obliterated by random thing falling from the sky. Anyone have any ideas?

Also weird thing i saw the other day while skimming rocks into the warren res.... a 10 cm soft plastic rigged on a wire trace.???????????? Is  there a warren ness monster i've not heard about?

Also, pretty weird that circle hooks are totally ineffective on toadies lol. why do the dirty buggers always have to swallow the hook lol

While early morning fishing/squidding off the rocks at Memory Cove with my son about 10 years ago we noticed a strange shape buzzing around in the water near our feet, pops its head up and its a Little penguin. Cool to see, but it gets more weird..... It susses us out for a few minutes then scrambles out onto the rocks and stands with us! In fact it stood right between us. "What is it doing Dad?"  Well as I don't do penguin I guessed at it either being ill or it was mightily lost and confused and thought we were big penguins! My 10 year old daughter joined us on the rocks and was so excited to see this beautiful little creature and as all kids like to do she wants to pat it. I said there is no way it will let you and as all kids like to do she proved me wrong! Obviously we didn't want to overly interfere with this creature, and once she had touched it and proved me wrong we left it to own devices and we fished on. It would occasionally have a swim and then get back out and hang with us again. Weird as! We finished up and as soon we left the penguin jumped in and I thought that was that.... Glanced back once, and then twice, and on the second occasion watched in amazement as a sea eagle swooped down from behind where we were standing and plucked our little friend from the water and carried it off to the other side of the cove. Without a word I walked on hoping to god that my daughter wouldn't look back, but of course she did, and then we got "wow Dad look at that big bird"... "oh what's it got, it's carrying something".... "on nooo the penguin Dad, it's got the penguin"!!! That's when you do your best explanation of that's how nature works, blah, blah, blah, but obviously that doesn't help a small person who has just lost her new favourite animal in the world, ever!!!
That year we were unlucky enough to come across many dead emus on the drive in to Memory Cove, a dead seal on the beach and the loss of our little friend. We renamed it Memorial Cove that year!

Not sure on the make of skirt lure ASD   but the ones i used were just like a marlin skirt lure but only about 6-8cm. We used white and it was great fun watching the skirt skipping in the wake of the boat then getting smashed by a salmon.

Charter operators off cape jervis use little surface skirt lures and they work amazing. Otherwise metal slugs or  harbodies all work

You mention >>>>> "It'll be for targeting mullies and snaps"It will depend on what comes along and picks up the bait,so be prepared and have a larger reel which can handle whatever is at the other end. The Pflueger SALT reels come in under $130 and you can choose the size you want,5 sizes to choose from.http://www.fishingwholesalers.com.au/pflueger-salt-5000-9kg-drag/

Brenton has nailed it with either a 3000 or 4000 sized reel. No need to go bigger than these reels as they have around 7-8kg drag and enough line capacity of either 15 or 20lb braid to tame any snapper. Only reason to go bigger would be if these reel sizes don't balance with your rod. Not much difference in line diametre between 15 and 20lb braids, I have both breaking strains on all my 3 -4k sized reels and most break above their rated breaking strain. I mainly use tuff line and it has never failed (just my knots).
