projoe reacted to Alexsfishin1 in St Kilda Winter Bream
St Kilda was slow with the salmon trout this morning, no body had caught one or even had a bite! It was super calm, I couldn't believe my eyes!
So I decided to fish closer in for some bream. I spotted a decent school of 30cm+ fish sitting against the rocks so I gave it a cast and was soon hooked onto a good sized bream. Measured at 34cm and was released after a few photos.
The next cast another fish took it on the drop and I hooked up almost instantly! This one put up a better fight and almost got me on a pylon. With frayed 6lb leader, I managed to land the fish and it measured in at 35cm! Another solid bream released after a few more photos.
After that fish, the school was spooked so I walked around a bit searching for another school. I ended up on the pontoon getting a bream a cast for 15 minutes, my brother and sister even got onto them! It was the biggest school of bream I have ever seen, it was almost like a salmon school. Ended up getting 10 fish around 25-28cm.
All fish released.

projoe reacted to Alexsfishin1 in First decent bream in a while!
Headed to a rock wall with Nathan which I know holds plenty of good bream, reading some of piratepom's recent posts! Burleyed up and threw out a chunk on an unweighted size 4 bait holder hook. Almost ever cast the bait was getting smashed by either bream or small st.
After a few smaller fish, I hooked onto a bigger one which went 30cm! Then another at 31cm! A few more legals and then this one jumps on the hook!!!
It went for a screaming first run! As I got it close to the rocks, it decided to dive into tight gaps which frayed the 6lb leader a bit. Luckily I turned it's head and got it up to the surface. Took a few snaps and measured it up, 36cm on the dot. Healthy fish too! Of course, released to fight another day.

projoe got a reaction from manycastsfewcaught in surf anchor sinkers
Just thought of this other tip i was given a few years ago if you only find you need a lighter grip on the sand try bending the wire halfway down & only 45 degrees to the sinker

projoe reacted to plankton in surf anchor sinkers
breakaway style grip leads work well, the design allows the wires to fold back with some pressure, freeing them from the sand much more easily, they are difficult to source here in Australia for a decent price though

pretty much all pre-tied rigs use monofilament, do you mean fluorocarbon Hoopsy? as fluorocarbon is much more invisible to fish and gives better line sensitivity. cheers.

Fluro is ok to use with plastics or hards but dont go cheap, better quality jap fluros they will cost more than braid.
the other benifit of fluro is you can fish it straight thru.
also make sure that line roller on the reel is in good nick & rolls freely.

projoe got a reaction from Zorgs in Breaking improved blood knot - suggestions
The 6lb trace material might be at fault if you had no problems with 10lb I would also look at were the knot is breaking i have had hooks in the past with sharp edges on the end of the eyelet turn that were breaking off 10lb leader line or try other knots. I have used a straight locked blood knot for years on swivels & diiachi hooks without a problem maybe that could be a better knot for the leader material you are using. Trying to snell sz12 hooks needs a lot of dexterity in the old finger tips

No sweat, you'll get a nice rebuild there.
The fish wont be able to resist it.

projoe got a reaction from Alexsfishin1 in Onk Breambos!
Excellent session there, nice solid looking jumper looks healthy but just be aware this species can sometimes have a marine worm that penetrates the flesh & takes up residence along the backbone of the fish, quite visible once filleted.

projoe got a reaction from southie THE BANGA in Just a couple photos down yorkes!
some very nice photography there. last time i saw the ethel would have been thirty odd years ago the hull was still upright, sort of, much of the upper deck & structure missing but mother nature is certainly taking its toll.

projoe got a reaction from newtontoney in Rods that are overhead and spin ?
Silstar powertip rods have/had a couple of rods in the range that could be used for spin or overhead the only factor stopping some rod blanks being used for both types of reels would be the taper ie slow taper blanks are not ideal for overhead use.
you would still need a larger stripping guide for the spin reel application but in saying that because the rod needs more smaller guides to supplement the overhead (to reduce or stop line touching the blank) would reduce its effective casting range when the spinning reel was used on the rod.
I personally prefer a rod built correctly for 1 style of reel to utilize the effectiveness of the blank & I guess to answer your question no building a rod for both style of reels on 1 blank would not harm the blank.
