Common sense is all well and good but it needs facts to back it up. And the fact would be the quantifiable increase in risk from shark fishing activities off jetties to swimmers. And that hasn't been demonstrated. The other problem is life cannot be lived according to the precautionary principle alone. It can only be lived on the principle of risk management, otherwise EVERYTHING would be banned. You stated yourself that a study to show that shark fishing around jetties increases the risk of shark attack is impossible. That's because the risk is below statistical detection, ergo - it is not a high impact risk. I've not heard of any attack near jetties which is where shark fishing and indeed crab netting (which produces a very similar burley stream) takes place. The ones I've heard about have all been off swimming beaches quite a distance away from jetties. And not many of them either. What you are advocating is disadvantaging and restricting a group from a recreational hobby they enjoy and is fully legal on the principle that a risk exists despite the fact that there is no statistical basis for the risk. That's like telling everyone to stop using their mobile phones because they haven't ruled out that it might cause cancer yet. (So far even the largest studies have shown no link with increased risk, but have not ruled out the potential for risk to exist, its just been below statistical detection)I can agree with you on restricting heavy burleying but that's why there are already rules preventing that by banning meat, blood and offal based products from being used as burley. If your concerned that people are still burlying too much using fish parts then raise that as an issue as I'm sure shark fishers would not overly object to restrictions on really heavy chumming the water. But burleying with a light burley stream of no more than is already being put out in crab nets and by other fisherman is very different from chumming and I don't think many shark fishers do more than what crab netters put out.

Emufingers, mate your beginning to sound like the old person on the jetty are you sure that it isnt you?People again are making there own facts and doing there best to destroy shark fishing. Well mate one question for you, do you have a PHD in marine biology and studied sharks for a length of time? If you have I may then begin to listen to your opinion. Otherwise I will not, and as for the surf life saving club, my backyard swimming pool is deeper then the beach there, again it is the surf life saving clubes like that of the one at henly that cause all of the grief for shark fisherman! And buddy I was one of the people there with the yak and shark fishing. So you better get the story correct in regaurds to berley . Call me stupid mate, but arent we allowed to throw in the berkley premade gar and tommie berley from the packet to get tommies and gar around?Yeah thats what i thougt now because you see its a small fish, you have no arguement, say as much as you like mate, but I was there I know what happened and the media twist everything, I think on a fishing forum it would be best to keep and opinion such as yours away. Consider joining a swimming forum mate? And we as fisherman are entiteled to fish for gar when we wait for sharks as there is not much else to do! Now for the kayak issue, if we have the "balls" to paddle a bait 300m off leave us alone coz, u's do not swim and it would certainly be way to far out of the patrol zone. Unlike swimmers we know that every time that we enter the water we realise that we are enetering the sharks environment! We take that risk and dont try to blame others if there is a sighting. Come on mate, you know that some of the accussations have absolutely no fact in them at all. Im considering people that we should live inside all our life we may walk outside and step on an ant! This is not a personal attack, but i feel strong about this topic as well, and we are being unfairly ridiculled. Media : "ROGUE FISHERMAN" wrong a gain, grumpy local bastard goes to throw 1600 dollar combo over the edge and boys are expected to leave it (should have been the title)? Give me a break, and there was no knife pointed at them at all. If your planning to swim this weekend Im just saying we have another trip planned this week, so if I were anyone that was swimming i would be on the watch out for a savage school of tommies and garfish. WATCH OUT WE ARE BRINGING THE TOMMIES CLOSER (WHAT A JOKE!!!!)As for the other you got a problem with my comment or the way I act down there, Ill be there saturday night and possibly friday night, come down and meet us and see we are good blokes, I will show you what we do and how we get them, then you will know 100% that we are doing nothing illegal! I would be more then happy to do this mate, for it is us as a sharking community that need to educate people to the methods that we use and show how we do nothing illegal!!Cheers SamN

people spread themselves along beaches anyway so fishing 400m away wouldnt make any difference at all, better of fishing on the jetty so you dont get in there way

Call me nieve, but hasnt shark fishing form jetties been going on for years? and haven't we been sharing the swim/fish areas for years?IS there ANY research in regards to shark/human attacks found to be attributed or even slightly linked to shark fishing.we cant throw as many opinions about as we like, but really its a pointless argument without facts.the increasing aggressiveness of those who oppose is getting ridiculous and could potentially get quite dangerous. For shrak fishos, like previously mentioned, try to steer clear of the abuse etc (hard to bite your tounge) but right now, as they have thrown "Child safety:" into the mix, every man and his activist dog thinks its wrong and will shout and scream. They will do what these occupy protesters are doing, Enticing aggression then miss quoting/filming/editing reactions etc

that's not the truth of what happened down there! i know the fisherman who apparently brang a knife out on the other fisherman but wasn't like that at all!he was trying to shark fish and the other fisherman didn't like it because hes a local and down there all the time fishing off that jetty and is sick of shark fisherman down there catching them! he said to my mate stop coming down here all the time fishing for sharks! (was his 1st time down there!)he grabbed his shark gear and threatened to through it into the drink ($1600 set up) and he was lucky he didn't get touched by doing that! my mate had a knife there for bait ect but didn't raise it to him! hes lucky he didn't get hurt for doing what he did grabbing a $1600 setup and threatening to through it over the side! the old fella rang the cops after a argument and they sorted it out they must of told the news about it!

Breambo, I was eluding to the possibility of a total possession limit, say per car, similar to a boat limit being 3x bag limit.Otherwise you'll have every tom dick and harry loading up the Torago with 7 passengers and collecting their 2,400 cockles. As it stands, there is nothing wrong with doing this and many would argue that its their right etc etc. But seriously, how many people need that many cockles? even if you were eating them for a family feast, thats like over 25kg of cockles... or over 50 bags of bait.I went today with the missus and her friend, who both come fishing with me, and we collected enough cockles to last months, possibly the whole summer.I just don't want to see the place turn to crap again is all because it has really turned good this year and it would be nice if it stayed that way. Hopefully most people take their fair share and not hit the place time and time again.

i to have seen them well over the fifty mark in the port and let me tell all of you who have not yet seen one they do look like snapper at that size.Use to catch a pair on a regular basis at the old troubridge slip way till i abused a asian for killing them and not releasing them .Then the old wreck down from the quarantine station seen a pair pulled up well over the fifty mark.Always big monsters up the creeks There are still plenty around but please catch &release as these fish are all older than most of us catching them ......

Thought I would share my experience, first time using circles on Whiting.Bought some size 2 and size 4 Mustad Demon light gauge circle hooks.Tied up my own paternosters with some 15lb fluorocarbon and the size 4s. Making sure the hooks were snelled the right way round. So the leader sort of continues the circle. Fishing 10lb braid. (Could go lighter, unsure if we were going to fish deep or not)Finally found a school of whiting off St. Kilda Yesterday afternoon.I can say, I definitely see the benefits of these hooks. The bite to hook up ratio was great. Just didn't strike and used just a slow small lift of the rod.Not a single fish was lost. All were nicely hooked in the lips, one in the corner of the jaw.Ended up with about 8 fish caught but they were all 29-30cm :pinch: , including a very small silver whiting. Will definitely be using them from now on. So far so good.

no need to apoligise jack, we all have our own views and methods which work for us and swear by them even if others disagree or not. As long as the method used, whether it be bridle, behind the head, with or without a stinger or any other method used longevity in live bait survival depends on many different and varied situations. The way baits are handled prior to use, species used whether it be a hardy type fish such as large ST's, large mullet etc. or more fickle fish like gar, smaller juvenile fish(within size limits of course) squid and so on are a factor as well as Careful placement of hooks when pinning livies, water quality and oxygen levels in live bait tanks, not over crowding aswell as gentle handling, swift transfers to bait tanks when caught all factor in live bait survival. Having a live bait lobbed out into the surf with a heavy sinker and short length of trace restricts the baits ability to swim properly in turbulent water exhausting itself trying to swim upright and avoid being battered to death or savaged by crabs etc. just by using a longer trace than what you may use to fish the port river is all thats needed for longevity in the surf. Bridle rigged, pinned behind the head or through the nose makes no difference to longevity or hookup rates. Adapting to the enviroment fished is whats important....cheers snake

no offence intended but you would be waisting your time and cash at myponga, thats if your talking big fish. they need currents steep drop offs and rocky terrain to hunt. ib be trying rapid head where i know a few have been caught before and my step dad sees them there often when diving. you get big ones there. and if you dont wanna try there pt. giles half way along is an awsm kingie jetty. good luck landing one there, but.My best tip for land based kingies is to take along a bucket of sand or gravel. throw it side armed into the water every few mins as they will come to your area if they hear this. like a scared bait school sound. they are so inquisitive and love comotion. it works.... id only use live squid for them as bait but some people use big gar or live trouties, goodluck mate.

Landbased kingfish is going to be my focus from now on,i'm keen to put in the hours and purely focus on catching kingies from the rocks on baits and lures. I will be summoning up the same passion I used on my mulloway fishing all those years ago which took pure dedication, perserverence, heaps of fishing and shitloads of patience and any spare time and money i had to finally catch quality big fish on a regular basis which made it all worthwhile and extremely satisfying. But to get too that point i needed the help and wisdom of successfull mulloway fisherman to kick start my long journey to success by just sharing some usefull tips and possible areas to consider trying without giving away to much of course and now if any SH members are willing to help me get started or even join me i would greatly appreciate any advise your willing to share with me regarding landbased kingfish. Info on rods and reels is not required but times of year, tides, well known kingfish rockfishing areas local or country and basic rigs and terminal tackle needed to land kingies would be a huge help indeed and truly appreciated....with thanks, snake

Thought I would put in my 2 bobs worth as I have been quoted here and been called a liar by some.I am sure that no one is aware but it was me that did the seminars in the Melbourne tackle stores along with 2 egi (squid jig) designers from a company called Gan Craft in Japan. In part I agree that you should not get caught up in the hype that is egi, many Australian distributors have tried to jump on the bandwagon by selling egi rods, however, to date I have only been able to find 6 egi rods available in Australia and none have been mentioned here. This leaves us with the problem of anglers picking up a so called egi rod and not being able to find a difference in feel or response to a bream rod. The reason for this is that there is no difference in the so called egi rods branded by many companies in Australia other than low ride guides.Egi rods have upwards or 3 separate tapers in the rod to give the rod a whip action, as you know with a whip you need to get the tip of the whip to move faster than the handle to get the whip to crack, the same goes for egi rods, they are designed to make the tip speed faster than the but section by combining tapers that will gear the tip to a faster speed with the action imparted by the angler. So dont be sucked in by marketing.Egi (squid jigs) has only been in Australia for approx 40 years, it has been in Japan for 400, how dare we question if it is a hype or fad, as far as the true egi market is concerned all fishing in Australia is a fad or hype as it has not been going as long as egi fishing itself, also one of the biggest reason why it is hard to get a lot of stock out of Japan, Australian fisho's are ignorant to new methods and styles, we call people idiots and liars when we dont understand something. Can any one remember 15 years ago when plastics came on to the market in Australia, every one said they were a fad and would not last and they dont work, I remember as a kid on the pier casting plastics around and being laughed at, now whos laughing, the very same people who would have been laughing at me prob have a few packs of placcy's in their fishing arsenal. Why in Australia do we dismiss something new as crap and hype??????????????Anyway thanks for posting up the info from my talks in Melbourne I am sure that some will get something from it, those who reckon its crap and are still fishing with handlines will always say that new stuff is crap and will always fish bait for snapper too, you can lead a horse to water but you can not make it drink. As far as a person (egimaster) being able to outfish a person with a normal (bream outfit) I do not consider myself an egi master, but using the newer techniques I have learned from fishing with lure makers from Japan (Yamashita, Ecogear, Gancraft and megabass) I can now with confidence out fish most of my mates who do not fish with the techniques I fish, it is not a rod that makes a difference, it is the many combined items that make a difference and no I can not do what I do the same with a bream rod as I can with an egi rod, I have tried this and have broken 1 T-curve, 1 Samurai reaction and 1 nitro but trying to fish the same action.
