BarneyB reacted to Seeseacol in Seal populations
I suggested the population at Outer Harbour may be a seasonal thing, but the fellow I chatted with assured me that the Long-nosed Fur Seal { formerly NZ Fur Seal } were there permanently now. I was not aware until fairly recently just how big the herds are now around our shores, really got to wonder how long the gulf fish stocks can cope with that kind of population increase, and when that gets low do they then move onto the migrating bird populations ?

Anyway, I know this subject is the hot topic for many rec and commercial fishers, and am beginning to understand why now. I actually worked full time for 10 years  with Marine Mammals and Seabirds here in S.A. so I have a soft spot for the species. This particular species of Seal had often been seen, but we never used to see these size populations in our regions. I hate to see them come to any harm,  there is obviously an imbalance in the eco system and I do believe something needs to be done before we see huge losses of fish stocks....a cull. The population explosion impacting on resident and migrating seabirds, plus much pressure on the endangered Australian Sealion population could be devastating.

    We all love fishing, right?

Apparently I don't like fishing any more - at least that's what I've been told by someone with more authority than me, but here is a ready to go fishing package - just hitch up, drop her in the water and go fishing the day you buy her!

Oh, and I meant drop the boat in the water - not your wife. Dropping wives in the water is apparently not appropriate and/or appreciated. And if you can buy a suitable wife - good luck to you. I've already bought and sold one wife, still paying for the later model and have no desire to find out what it would cost me to sell her (the wife, not the boat).

And the best news is you don't need a big tow vehicle - she can be towed behind a typical family sedan like a Commodore or Falcon! The boat is also the right size for towing behind a family sedan.

You might have guessed I'm really disappointed to be selling my boat, but my wife has decided that the caravan is more important, so this great boat package simply has to go.

She (the boat, not my wife) has seen very little use due to business commitments and my wife's desire to travel in the caravan instead of going out fishing. And let's be honest - if I don't sell the boat to get the caravan SWMBO wants, then I'm not likely to see much use out of my wife either.

A really comfortable and stable boat - the cabin is big enough for two to sleep in and there is heaps of storage space inside the cabin and also on deck. Rock solid fibreglass hull.

Please note that these are all words that should not be applied to your wife - comfortable, stable (as if!), big enough to sleep two, heaps of storage space and rock solid. These descriptions are only about the boat. Please, you have to believe me!

This package is complete and ready to go and includes:

    - UHF (27 MHz) radio

    - all required offshore safety equipment including life jackets, flares, bucket, EPIRB and so on (ask me nicely and I'll even give you a life jacket for the missus)

    - Lowrance LCX-37C colour combination chartplotter and fishfinder (not that you need a chartplotter - apparently wives always know where you are and where you should be)

    - Bimini with clear sides and front

    - rod holder on the bimini

    - bait board (never used, at least not by my wife)

    - bilge pump (electric)

    - 100 litre underfloor fuel tank (which I will make sure is full)

    - Sea Trail galvanised trailer (with new winch)

    - PortaPotti toilet (for the wife's comfort and your peace and quiet)

    - anchor (should not be attached to any person, especially your wife)

She (again, the boat, not the wife) is equipped with a 90HP Evinrude E-Tec outboard, which starts first time, every time. Heaven only knows what life would be like if my wife's mouth was as reliable as this motor.

A 20 litre drum of E-Tec oil (worth over $300) also comes with the boat because we all know how important proper lubrication is and so you won't have to worry about buying lube, I mean oil, any time soon!

As an added bonus we'll even throw in our tow tube which is shaped like a jet ski and you'll also get the tow bridle and tow rope. Capable of carrying three people, this tube is a bundle of fun and gets comments everywhere it goes.

I have found that the tow rope is long enough to effectively mute your wife's screams too!

    I have a dilemma and a new addiction { nothing new there }

There was a time when I went went fishing with just 2 rods and reels...one for top fishing and one for bottom fishing, then I started reading fishing mags and forum reports and am now possessed with choices ...just in case. I

I have now resorted to being eccentric in my perceived needs and now on the boat I take..............

1 one rigged for Gar and Tommies
    1  rigged for Whiting { little used so far }
    1 for Snapper or the like { wishfull thinking   }
    1 rigged for Squid
1 rigged for light spinning for Snook, Salmon trout, Flathead and the like
1 rigged for heavier trolling/spinning for things thta exist in my dreams.

Probably should have one rigged for surface fishing for Gummy Shark or the like
.and then there is a couple of Snook Paravane rigs on spools...........and I'm still not sure if that's enough to cover all bases arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!!!!!!!!!

My name is Colin and I have a problem................. and I think I need a bigger rocket launcher set on the boat ....and then a bigger boat

As others have mentioned, chook pellets from local fodder store.

2 * 1.5litre water bottles frozen for use in esky with salt water, chills down effectively & doesn't dilute the salt water.

We have a small chest freezer dedicated to storage of bait & burley so:

Squid, tubes get eaten, heads & wings (if not used for food) go into the bait, guts into burley

Any Tommies that don't make it to the plate or the smoker go into the bait bag.

Guts, frames, heads, minced and into burley bag.

Any bait not used goes into the burley bag, chopped up fine, mixed with Tuna oil and frozen into logs to fit the burley pot.

I keep a tub of chook pellets soaking in Tuna oil, great Gar burley.

Household loose change goes into a pot and pays for Cockles & Gents and sometimes rammp fees.

By the time we go away for a week or so at Stansbury, all we have to buy is fuel.

Digging for bloodworms gives you one of the best baits out for catching bream.
Keep worms alive by changing seawater daily, or preserve when live in metho which tenses them up before they freeze.
Too many bait and tackle shops sell bloodworms that are only frozen, not preserved which turn to mush when they thaw.
If you dig for tubeworms and wish to preserve, salting up the live worms seems to keep them in better condition.
Buy a bait pump and pump nippers for bream and whiting, only use fresh as they are delicate little buggers and don't freeze well.
If freshwater fishing in the Murray, buy a couple of shrimp pots and use soap or dried dog food to get the best bait for callop.
Dried dog food in yabby nets also works dynamite, and attracts baby carp which I freeze and use for bait on mullies and strips for salmon. Also have caught squid on whole baby carp twice now, but I don't target squid, so am by no means any expert on them.
And corn is a hell of a lot cheaper than tiger worms, and garden dug earth worms outfish bought tigers any day.
Wood grubs can be found in rotting pine logs in most SA Forestries forests, and 75cm scrub worms can also be dug in the moist valleys.
Who says you need to buy bait?

That's the first time anyone has called me an expert, you've obviously never been fishing with me. Unfortunately I know a fair bit more about rods and gear and technical crap than I do about actually catching anything. :S You are correct about where I fish, as most of my squidding has been done from jetties or off the kayak in heavily fished areas like Seacliff. Usually I employ the old lift, drop, repeat method, but occasionally when things are slow I like to mix it up and sometimes that seems to work. Although the guys I see throwing a handline off each side of their tinny and then simply retrieving them after a few minutes always seem to be doing well. I think I prefer the rod as it makes the whole thing more fun for me.

BarneyB reacted to plankton in NEWBIE QUESTION - Rod action
A rod's action refers to how far down the blank the rod will flex when initially loaded up, like when casting or working a lure. A fast action rod will only flex right near the tip, a medium (or moderate) rod will flex about halfway to the reel seat and slow action rods will flex right into the butt. There's also in-between ratings like moderate-fast, extra fast, etc. With the weight of a fish on the rods will of course flex further. Unfortunately, some rod companies do not list their rods' actions.I personally prefer a fast or mod. fast rod for squid as it allows the jig to be worked in a variety of ways, with a slower action rod it becomes difficult to give the jigs short, sharp jerks. Even for whiting I like a mod. fast to moderate action, the only time I have used a slow action rod is when fishing with extremely fragile baits in other parts of the world. For good quality rods around the $100 mark it's hard for me to go past the Dynamix rods sold at Ray and Annes, they're built on Shimano blanks but with better components. Best to go in and have a feel and tell them what you want the rod to do and let them point you in the right direction.

Two men, aged 50 and 51, were issued with expiation notices totalling $1,500 each and their equipment was seized for exceeding bag limits, and taking undersized crabs. It’s the second time this week that Barossa Police have ‘pinched’ fisherman for flouting PIRSA regulations. At 3pm on Wednesday, police patrolling the foreshore of Thompson Beach witnessed a fisherman, assisted by a woman, loading plastic tubs and crab rakes into a car.Police discovered 27 undersized swimmer crabs in the tubs, which were released back into the water.Police wish to remind the community that persons who conduct illegal fishing activities will forfeit their catch and may have their equipment, including vehicles, seized. Before you hit the water, be sure that you’re familiar with size, bag, boat and possession limits- See more at: http://www.sapolicenews.com.au/component/content/article/19-lsa/17462-catch-of-the-day-barossa-police-bag-law-breaking-fishermen.html#sthash.81NOq2ob.dpufI cant believe how many :c stupid people are out there raping our fishery and doing this sort of shit it makes me :c furious, start tying nooses and hang em I say like Des mentioned in another post to fish in S.A you need to sit a simple test to say you understand our rules and sign off on it I would happily pay a fee to do so cheers a pissed off 4THA

So ive been aske d several times to throw my hat in the ring re tackle comps to support the siteThose who dont know me I own the KOMODO fishing brand and the show store TACKLEBUSTERSOver the past two years I have designed and been very succesful in the sale of fishing tackle both interstate and locally. I have even been picked up by an international company who distribute my tackle. I design over 100 rods and 60 reels that I have made overseas by the same companies that produce mitchell abu garcia and shakespeare to name a couple of the major well known brandsI am looking for a fishing rod design that is not avasilable in the usual market place - last year I designed a 9' light surf for ladies teens and oaps which was lighter, made from carbon but with some glass for flexibility but with a short handle rather than a 3' handle and it rests on your hipSo... the comp is come up with an idea, design a rod, drawing, actual physical examples are better with a description of how and why it works better than whats availableSpecial consideration will be given if it suits local conditionsPrizeI will put the name of the designer on the rod and reference them in marketting (which may lead to better things) and I will make a run of 100 rods to be sold locally. The designer will get a selection of 10 of the rods for himself that he can keep sell donate or useThere may be more than one prize (if there is more than one fantastic design) and it will end in 4 weeks or as soon as I decide there is a outright winner(s)I will run with So thats what you,ve asked for.... go to it guys  I can be pm,d messaged or emailed at komodofishingtackle@gmail.com or on here through the site
