The medium action rod is a good start. A reel with mag control is a good idea as well. I personally don't like using much less than 10lb braid on baitcasters, and I also prefer proper braid (rather than a fused line like Fireline, which I prefer for spinning reels).

I assume you're using some sort of sp with your jigheads. What size, as that can make a big difference in the overall casting weight and could affect your braid choice?

Hi. I would checkout the 13 fishing z concept range. Seem incredibly smooth. I think there are a few vids floating around on them.

The Barra are there. My brother lived in Darwin for about a year. He got quite a few legal landbased Barra on lures. It seemed very tide dependant.

That is my experience as well. Barra are a lot like a decent sized mulloway in SA. You can do everything right but still not catch one. I've caught heaps of Barra, but not one legal one yet after 2 years up here. I call barra 'unicorns'.

Barra can be hit and miss. I have lived in the NT for 7-8 years, Jabiru, Katherine, Darwin @ various times. Fished all the usual spots and some not so usual - got some good fish. Once I went to this billabong down near Bestwick / Barunga - mate worked with the traditional owners, so we could get in - it looked like Barra uber paradise. Well I flicked a lure off these rocks, into where the billabong drained into a fast flowing creek, for like 4 hours. Then my mates girlfriend chucks the most pathetic first cast into the same spot I had been casting into - 10-15m away - and bags like a 1m barra first go. Went out from Timber Creek once, in a roof top tinny, .357 in the tackle box, crocs bloody everywhere - the other 2 guys nailed barra after barra - I got SFA. Good luck! A reef fishing charter will give you a greater % of success. Hand lining Spanish mackerel and big queenies is pretty cool.

As Hugo said. Corroboree billabong and Shady Camp freshwater side both good day trip options (read leave Darwin around 0400 stop for bacon & egg rolls at Corroboree hotel). Just to whet your appetite this one went 86cm from Shady Camp freshwater in September 2010.

Fresh water side of the barrage on the Mary River is a good one day option. Early start, 2 hour drive, great scenery, barra and saratoga usually on the cards. Lots of operators will take you there and you won't have to share with any randoms as you can book plenty of boats for just 2 people.

Would not recommend this guy. My bro did a 3 day live aboard with him in 2015. Trolled for 3 days for nothing, but one guy in the boat got a hit and landed a 1m barra. The charter operator uses social media well and gets a lot of big barra but fishes very hard for them and his customer service seems to be lacking.

6 weight is good for carp..4 even better
Sounds like you have it dialed in now though.
Only suggestion for you is to watch those carp on light tippet. Can be done and lots of people tackle them on light gear BUT
they love to twist around and use their pectoral fins to try and pop the fly out of their mouth or snap the line. Can be very frustrating if you haven't landed a few before.
Consequently, you need to apply the right amount of pressure and rod angle to avoid losing the fish. Especially if using barbless hooks.

15 pound on 8 weight for Salmon is good. Even ten works if you can keep them from running under a shelf or brushing your line against the rocks.

6wt will be fine. Use a floating line and gentle presentation. usually if they are feeding on the bottom then the fly needs to be dropped gently in front of them or in their path, usually just a little jiggle of the fly catches their attention. Too much movement or splashing often scares them. With floating bread flies I just chuck them out and wait for them to smash them.....

    Hi all.

Last few days I have been targeting carp on the fly. Been having a hell of a time but fun all the same.
I have managed to spot a Moby Dick of a carp in a spot down by the Torrens. I call him that because he is white in color with the markings of a Coi. Looks pretty cool. But he is a smart bastard. I swear he is working together with some of his friends swimming around. I'm starting to feel like captain Ahab chasing this one.

For example...blind cast to where I last saw him on his beat up and down...slow strip and sink..watching the end of the line...Nothing..something catches my eye..another carp worth casting too...pick up my retrieve to cast to the spotted carp..and wouldn't you know it there is Moby Dick checking out my wooly bugger while I'm distracted setting up a cast to the other carp. Obviously the fast stip spooked him off and his gone for a few hours.

Could go on but you get the picture.

Believe it or not a quick google and I was surprised to see that Carp are rather intelligent fish with some degree of learning capacity.
I'd like to say I'm smarter than a carp but at this stage they have got the better of me. HAHA

    Go to Ikea

Buy $2 (or thereabouts) childs toilet step.

Drill some drainage holes, use thick cable ties to prevent tangles, cut slot for belt in concave part.

PERFECT!!!. Can cut slots on side and rest reel inside tub with rod over top as convenient holder whilst you re-rig. Sits perfectly against your hip like it was made for fly fishing.

Here is my Thomas The Tank stripping basket.... al under $5

Work on your technique. You will get there.
    For example:
I had a very short 4 weight with a rio intouch line. Was having trouble getting it to shoot out and lay a nice cast on some big water I was fishing.
Got frustrated as you do, looked to the equipment as an excuse.
My Dad picked up the rod and cast after cast had tight loops and accurate presentation. A few quick words and tips and following his example my casting dramatically improved.
Get your timing right and any decent rod will load up and shoot that line out. You will be able to notice the difference.

May be able to get more distance, maybe not. Depending on what you are fishing for and where, distance rarely comes into it. The ability to cast short distance, accurately is more important most of the time. Go to the Rio site or speak to Keith on Port Rd. Super helpful and has a good range of gearfor all budgets and skill levels.

Try a red and black matuka (google gives some good examples), I haven't been fly fishing for ages but this would be my first choice. It is a fish pattern that is a bit longer than a nymph..
Other things to consider would be how deep the fly is getting.. soft plastics work great for reddies as they bounce along the bottom. might need to get down deeper but im not sure what type or depth of water you are fishing. They love things that flash so try something with a metallic finish? As for size I think anything that is around 2.5-5cm long to would be fine as the 50mm soft plastics like wrigglers are lethal on the reddies. As for retrieve I would say something erratic with plenty of pauses. the quick movement will fire them up but theyre not a fast fish so pausing will give them time to smack it.
Like I said im no expert and haven't fly fished for anything for ages but these would be my first thoughts, take them or leave them
