Well, i havnt really posted these holidays but by no means have i not been out fishing!!! Where do i start? well as many of you know i fish the onky a fair bit and have been hitting it pretty hard the first few weeks of holidays which resulted in some decent bream and mulloway. I also had the opportunity to head down to portland in victorias south east which has some awesome fishing and got myself a new pb squid with a hood just over 40cm and also a pb snapper around 50cm.

Then from there i jetted off to sydney and had the opportunity to do some estury fishing up the central coast and omg is it amazing! When i say flathead galore i mean it! plenty of flathead ans well as my first tarwhine and a few yellowfin bream. Had a crack on the sand whiting with poppers and had a few hits but not one hookup!

Now this is the real exciting part, what an entrance to 2015 with 2 wicked new pbs! I decided to fish the mouth of the onky as i heard its been doing well for mulloway lately believe it or not but guess what decids to smash my 25cm live mullet! a 47cm bream!!!!! absolutely over the moon, been stuck on 42cm for the most part of 2 years and to top it off with that was amazing! But it gets even better! Ive been hitting goolwa beach a bit lately with my mate for a few gummies and little schoolies but last week i finally got a legal mulloway of 79cm! wicked fight in the surf and i reckon im addicted now absolutely love it just gets your heart racing!

stick to the gulps the scent works a treat! you can actually buy packets of the 2' worms and find they work an absolute treat on just about everything. You can also buy the 2' grubs in gulp alive tubs which should set you up for a while

Base of the mangroves under shade is good.

You want to be above the high water mark in an area that the weed had deposited and decomposed for a very long time. The worms will be on the sand right where the weed is starting to breakdown and can be 50cm or more deep down. If you are still digging through rotting weed you may not be deep enough, keep going down till you have nice cool sand layer and the worms should be right above. If no luck move down the beach 10m and dig again. Once you find one you can usually get heaps.

Soft plastics, something around 5" to keep the little bream away.

I hooked what felt like a half-decent fish in the Onk the other morning, peeled off some line quickly then busted me off on the rocks.

    Damn.

The only touch all morning, bloody elusive mullies.

Support your local retailer i say,if everyone goes online then there will be no local guys left.
I have found that if you develop loyalty to one shop they will match anything online or close to it,even better in some cases.
Some of those guys on the Montabello trip were loyal local customers of the shop.

Can i suggest if your are fishing primarily landbased investing in a loner rod? say around the 7'6-8ft mark.... Better casting soft tip for feeling bites etc....

daiwa air edge do a 7'6 1-3kg, also daiwa seabass do an 8ft 1-3 kg rod... certainly a nice rod and good price tooo

When land based I strongly believe covering more ground is extremely important to find squid. I see more squid landed from people who cast out as far as they can and flick for squid imitating a prawn than those who just drop a jag in the drink and expect a squid to come along and take a liking to a floating jag.

So casting distance a big plus!

Doesn't help when you have things like the 'This week’s fishing report, brought to you by the team at Tackle World Adelaide Metro.' for the 17th October reporting 'Bream continue to be caught in the upper reaches of the Onkaparinga River along with small to legal size school Mulloway'

How far exactly are the 'upper reaches of the Onkaparinga River'?

You think a local tackle store would include something about the closed season wouldn't you?
