So yesterday I headed off to West Lakes to see what was happening. A massive school of salmon schooled up near the steps and there was a dude who caught one every cast! Sadly I didn't bring a rod but, he had 2 rods but there was too much happening to use both so he let me use the other rod! He was a great bloke. After the school had moved on, I had landed 3 decent 35cm+ salmon! He had at least 20 so he gave some away. He gave use 3 more so we had a nice bag of 6 salmon. I really thank him a lot because if he wasn't there, we wouldn't get a nice feed. Cheers to him!

An often asked question is "how do i butterfly fillet a gar"well this is how i do it.I use a rounded butter knife sharpened to a nice edge.put the knife right through the fish just below its butt and cut down to the tail.now cut towards the head but don't cut through the ribs, then slice down behind the head too the backbone.now with an angled knife cut through the pin bones but over the top of the ribs but don't cut all the way through the fish and leave the gut intact. It will look like this when done but fold it back into place and turn the fish over.this time start with the downward cut behind the head then with an angled knife again run the knife towards the tail cutting through the pin bones but not the ribs.like this.then pick up the fish and fold the fillet near the head so it is skin on skin and tear the fillet away from the fish,it is important to get it started correctly so you don't end up with any black on the fillet.the end result is a clean fillet without any mess on the board or the fillet.Any errors you make like cutting through the ribs should be corrected before you start to tear the fillet away from the belly or you will get black lining on your fillet. It takes about 35 seconds per fish once you are proficient. cheers brenton

I'm amazed at how long bridle rigged baits last. Definitely worth doing. Only new to bridle rigging baits myself and yet to bridle baits for mullies, but mates have gone real well rigging small circles on shitties. Main things to keep in mind from my limited knowledge is to use the right length rubber band (not hanging ages from the head, and not pinned that hard that the hook rolls) and to use circles so they find the corner of the mouth once the baits engulfed. If your after a needle definitely go the ones from sport fishing scene. Can't remember the brand name but they are the best I've seen, hold their shape and the eye of the needle is offset so its level with the needle shaft and slides through the bait without damaging it. Others I've seen aren't offset like this and rely a piece of rubber tubing to slide over the eye.Hope this helps. Cheers.

spewing i just typed out a reply and my computer froze!! cheers to the blokes that have put in the hard yards and taken the time to share what they have learned. brad are you downrigging or ballooning/drifting baits? i hear a lot that 4kg of drag is as a rule of thumb more than enough, that if a big fish wants to head for cover it will get there anyway and that heavier drag just makes them angrier. do any of you guys free spool charging fish or just lock up? there has to be something in that a lot of people still run 24kg+ tackle fishing 8kg plus of strike drag and don't muck around...cheers again to those that have taken the time to reply.

Hey Bear gryllcessity,Just wanted to add a wee bit more about this for ya, I have caught 7 big (over 15kg) kingfish on live squid baits, and all seven have been hooked on the top hook (the one in the squids bum) with the other hook taking hold in the gill or flank of the fish somewhere. I run a Penn Inter 50 vsw with 37kg(now) but basically 50lb setup and fish with a rod bucket and back harness sometimes. I preset my strike drag to around 9kg and from hookup to landing the fish it is non stop fight but the biggest king I have caught of 65lb took just 6 minutes or so on this gear worked hard.Kings around 40lb have been bowled over in less than 3 minutes yet one I got with "simon1" of about 8kg took similar time yet the fish would've been lucky to hit 8kg???????????????????????The reason I use gama livebait 9/0's and not 10/0's (or mustad hoodlums) is the finer gauge but still super strong hook, well able to cope with sundet drag on 24kg tackle. My first 2 big kings were caught on 24kg and finer gauge gama octopus 7/0's but after a mate caught a 14kg king on 24kg with me and bending a gama octopus 7/0 nearly 45 degrees I changed hook pattern. The hook thickness thing probably comes from originally using mustad hoodlums and never getting a bite compared to catching fish on the finer wire, whether this is the reason I caught these fish I do not know. I fished a whole year (probably 40 dedicated days) with 250lb leader and didn't get a bit so next year I changed back down to 120 and caught 4 in 6 weeks. Dunno if it was luck or line size but it worked for me......Good Luck and can't wait to see some photos!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I have fished rapid head twice for kings for no luck but have caught them at cape jaffa and victor harbor as well so persistence will pay off.

funny you should be asking this question, i have an artical that goes in depth of how i bait my squid gar and live trouties for big fish in the next wild coast mag. it should be a good read for ya and i hope it helps many others too. In the artical i dont profess its right in anyway but these are tips and tecniques that work for me..... but anyway i place one hook in the tail 1cm in also like w.brad but my second hook is placed in the squirter under the squids head. it leavs so much hook piont out and never fouls up. works for me on fish uop to 27kilo,.

I have been through a few aerators now and the best one I've had for the cash so far has been one of the jarvis walker ones. Unlike most things with their name on it, its been really good. It's just over a year old and still going strong. Been dunked a couple times but the gasket seperating the two halves of the body and sealed switches seemed to do the job and it hasn't shorted or shat itself. Battery life is good, and terminals haven't started to corrode yet (again probably because of the gasket). The plastic of the body itself is pretty sturdy, its been smacked around and dropped/stepped on heaps of times and is still sweet. The cord that comes with it is long enough (aerator I had before this one was way too short) and doesn't leak air. That's one of the biggest things I've found with cheap aerators is if the tube is too hard it doesn't seal and air leaks. Only main criticism is that it kinks because its so soft but aside from that I reckon you couldn't go far wrong with it. Reckon it was about $15 bucks. Here's the link;http://www.jarviswalker.com.au/tec-2-speed-aerator.html

In short, you aren't allowed to fish in the lake from any powered craft. But that bloke sounds nothing short of a dickhead, and one of many. I live on the lake and have dealt with people like that so many times its a joke. Come out of their houses screaming at you swearing, threatening, taking photos etc and no matter how reasonable you are, how many times you explain you are releasing fish and that legally you are fine to do what you're doing (I mainly fish in a yak) or what you say its the same. Took my little brother out for the first time to fish topwaters last summer and he nailed 6 fish in as many casts. I was looking to be a great session until a bloke storms out of his house, starts yelling at us and then threatens to spray me and my (at the time) 10 year old brother with a hose. Having copped a mouthful the day before from a house two doors down, i told him "avoiding getting banned..." and that if he sprayed my brother with the hose I would shove it down his throat. He went back inside, my little brother continued to catch and release fish and we had a great session. I am by no means saying to be a dickhead to residents, nor that the law doesn't matter but at the end of the day being nice and listening doesn't make a difference. You will never be allowed to fish in there with a motor powered craft because there is nothing the council/government will gain. The 'too loud' excuse gets wearing when you watch a pair of dragon boats, a dozen people in each, getting screamed at by a bloke with a megaphone. Great when they do that at night. Not to mention the rowing club races. Did i mention they can use outboards? Oh they can strap three to a pontoon to push that along as well. But the council have nothing to gain by allowing people to use the same motored craft to fish there, nor do most residents have anything to gain by agreeing to let legislation change. So go for it, nothings going to change. Sending a pm now to let you know a couple things, I live across the lake from where lake patrol launch and can guarantee you won't get fined if you fish smart.
