Gday. After a fair bit of slackness at the old rod building caper, I thought I'd better get back onto it and start finishing off some of the works in progress.I've never had a "flash" heavy rod for trolling or bottom bouncing. I bought a 10-15kg 5'6" Ugly Stik a couple of years ago, but not having a boat meant I didn't really need my own "flash" heavy rod. I decided a while ago that I neeeeeded one.The blank I chose was a Samurai NV9 rated to a maximum drag of 15kg. I think I was a bit heavy handed in going for this one but nonetheless, I have given this rod a run through its paces (read on) and am happy with how it delivered. The grips are EVA, the components are all Fuji: Alconite guides and tip, heavy duty reel seat, deluxe gimbal butt.As usual, I added a hook keeper as I get peeved seeing at high end rods (that attract a high price) to find that they have no hook keeper, forcing people to hook their sharp things onto the guide frames, or worse still... the guide inserts!Strangely it seems that Samurai provide no decal to affix to the completed rod to further expose their product. This is the 3rd Samurai blank I've built on and they've all had a lovely "Samurai NV9" or "Samurai SX0001" painted in metallic gold on the blank... but right where the grips are to be glued. Dunno!Anyway, all guides are underbound then over bound - the threadwork took me bloody ages. 2 coats of colour preserver were then applied, then several coats of epoxy.I was lucky enough to get a week to let the epoxy cure fully before loading it up. The result was 2 SBT (13 & 22kg). The rod and a Shimano Thunnus Ci4 6000 with 40lb Power Pro braid handled it very nicely. It then had no problem bottom-bouncing for Southern Bight Redfish, Snapper and Morwong in 55m of water with nice sensitivity for bite detecting but still giving out plenty of power. So now this rod is going to get hung up out of the way until it'll get dusted off to be used again when I next get the chance to go chasing some big fish. Thanks for reading.Cheers.

I don't think they are found in nature's buffet here in SA. I have heard a loose comment that the bait that we buy here has been caught in QLD but I am totally not sure where they're from really.

thefunkychicken got a reaction from Komodo in Considering having a go at fly-fishing.
After a bit of trolling through the posts in the Fly Fishing area, I have found out a little bit of information. With information comes more questions, here they are:I think I might start with a 7 or 8 weight outfit at about 9' long. How much will I need to spend on a rod to get a decent bit of gear? ie- not a rod I will outgrow in 5 minutes and have to replace anyway.I will be targeting Mulloway, Bream, ST, Flatties, etc, will a 7 or 8 weight rod do the job?How much should I look to spend on a reel, line and backing to suit the aforementioned rod? What sort of flies should I initially be looking at purchasing to target the species above?Apologies for all the questions, thanks for any hints/tips/suggestions.Cheers.

Ive flyfished for two years now and I love it. Like Marsone I flyfish on SAFWAA waters but I also am getting into chasing estuary species with the fly. It is definately worth it and I hope that you will get into it.

I totally agree with MarsOne. I went to the Fly fishing day, tried it for the first time, liked it, and now I have 2 rods, a 4W & a 6W I've caught trout in dams and on the river and at the moment it's the only fishing I do. :)Try this site for a good view of many questions you may have.http://www.sexyloops.com/beginners/index.shtml

I've gotten into it pretty recently...Just bought my first decent outfit, loving it!I started by catching a few redfin and trout in SAFWAA dams - with a $70 7 weight combo I picked up here on S+H. Lord Blackbilly held a fly-fishing day at his property several months back - where newbies were paired up with more experienced fishos. It was here I caught my first fish, after popping the cherry it all came much faster!SAFWAA has fly rods that are up for loan to members - with membership a mere 60 bucks a year it would be a great place to try flyfishing, and also have someone take you out and give you a few pointers. Without it I would've strugged through teaching myself more than I already did.Not trying to shamelessly plug the club, but is sure did help me out!

Gday.I got a Shimano Coriolis for my ticket into the world of baitcasters. I have done a bit of dry land practice casting with it and have used it in the water a few times. I think it'll be a long while before I feel the need to upgrade it.It was about $100 when I got it about a year ago, the price shouldn't have changed much.Cheers.

Gee, from the sounds of it, there's a few people here who have NEVER fished anywhere other than South Australia.I wonder how many Territorians scowl when they see SA numberplates on trailers at boatramps around the Top End.

Gday.I had a good look at both the 4000 and 6000 Thunnus CI4.For me it's definitely going to be the 6000. The weight difference between a 4000 Baitrunner D and a 4000 Thunnus is close to stuff all, however the difference between a 6000 Baitrunner D and a 6000 Thunnus is quite marked. They're not exactly cheap so I'll just sit on my hands for a little while before I blow my dough but it's high on the list.Cheers.

Gday.I started this rod a while agohttp://www.strikehook.com/forum/35-bait-a-tackle/112797-3rd-and-4th-home-build-attemptsand have finally made to progress.I've decided that it's going to be a gift for a dear friend who has a degenerative nerve disease (similar to MS). He probably won't even use the thing but if he does, it certainly won't see much abuse. As a result - and after seeing some photos elsewhere - I've decided to go a bit "outside the square" with some of the finishing. The rod is a 7' 2-3kg Samurai with more than a couple of hours worth of work in it. One more coat of clear epoxy and she's all done.Cheers. Thanks for reading.(and as always, any suggestions/tips/opinions/criticisms/etc are more than welcome)When I get a spare minute I'll try to get another photo in of the whole rod.
