Nice report w2bf. Mate of mine who entered said there were scores of boats fishing under and around the santos jetty at night and only one got slapped with a fine.

My Snapper comp was an eventful time, on day one my mate and i launched at about 7:30am and headed out to a drop in the middle of the gulf that had been given to me by a member of this forum. We got there and within about 2 hours i had caught 3 pannies. To get them we had to work through quite a few snapper in the 32-36cm range. After that the tide started to run quite hard and the anchor started to slip so we pulled it up and re-anchored. whilst we were doing this a boat full of victorians rocked up and started sounding around. they continued to sound around for almost an hour before anchoring up about 10m away from us. An entire :c ing gulf and he anchors up there!Anyway, we were just fishing and watching one of the dickheads on the boat next to us flick a squid jag in almost 90ft of water when my mate Will's rod buckled over (right in the middle of the tide). He was on it like a flash and after about a 10 minute fight i netted his Snapper (we had only bought the net the night before after much ummming and ahhhing) which when weighed in was 7.88kgThis caught the attention of the vic's next door who promptly pulled anchor and went for about another half hour sound around. I swear, if they spent half as much time fishing as they did sounding they might of actually caught a fish! anyway, they anchored up again for a bit then left. idiots.We were then joined by some local guys who weren't in the comp, they were just out for a fish. they had not been there all that long when just came out of nowhere and started circling our boatIt was pretty interested in the propeller so the guys in the other boat yelled to us to put the engine in gear to stop it spinning. This worked and the shark left the propeller alone and kept circling, getting tighter and tighter. i wasn't particularly happy about it but after half an hour it vanished as quickly as it appeared.After that we fished on for about another hour but once again we were having problems with the anchor pulling so with the weather worsening we decided to head in, swinging through mudbanks on the way. there was at least 20 boats anchored up there so we tried to anchor but the anchor wouldn't still didn't hold. By this stage it was about 7pm so we headed in. No point being out there if we cant hold anchor. So for the day we ended up with three pannies and Will's 7.88kgWe cleaned them all up and went home, ready for a long Saturday

Still might see a couple of horses caught, i wouldn't be surprised if the winning fish was up around the 14 - 15 kilo mark, but no where near as many fish over the 12 kilo mark, as in the glory days of the pens.The bigger ones are much harder to scope out, and as i said before its the locals with some homework up their sleeves that will do well. This has turned a lot of victorians away.

I'm working so i cant. I reckon the comp is losing/has lost the appeal it once had, especially for interstaters. Due to not being able to catch that horse around the kinfish pens anymore, and a lack of snapper now days all in all.The locals that are in the know pretty much now have the comp sewn up. We'll see what happens this year, but im betting a low number of fish being caught.

I couldnt see anything

Always used baitrunners for snapper in baitrunner mode and very rarely miss a hook up. The old series 4500 and 6500 are fantastic and reliable. Pity they are at an end. The new OC models look great though. I'd recommend them for snapper mac.

If we all leave a place better than we found it imagine the world we'd live in. Personally I feel if you stay or camp somewhere you could not only clean up your own mess, but help clean up after those too stupid to consider it themselves. If others happen to spot you helping clean another site after someone has left then maybe it'd have a ripple effect. I know it has on me. Ignoring rubbish is almost as bad as leaving it yourself.

I use two, twenty litre buckets. One with holes drilled in it for my burley pot, the other for freezing my burley mix. Once the frozen burley block slides out for use, it fits perfectly in the other bucket.For more flavour i use cheap black and gold cat food, the pilchard, tuna or sea food basket variety. Too good to feed your cat with. The snapper love it that much they come up purring

Pretty much what urhooked said. Sorry to spoil your party W2BF . Ive seen all types of fish being cleaned on those tables that people bring back for convenience. I saw a monster kingy a lad had brought back from coffins, he wanted to show his family, then cleaned it here. Seen nannygai frames in the bin.

You'd be ok for sure. If they had common sense and realised that you were targeting other species your all good. As long as that hooked snapper went straight back as carefully as possible.

I very rarely catch fish in the rip on the drift. I find they feed on tide changes much more aggressively. I've caught a hell of a lot of snapper there, 99% at anchor, on tide change or dodge tides.Get an anchor that works if you want to fish the rip with more success. I even burley the bottom.

The only reason i ask is because they are now considered a hard catch. For me a big snapper is easier to catch, and we all know about catch and release with a snapper.Netters have taken toll on Mr KG. So has the rec, likes of me and you. To look after this species, so my grandson can catch one. So do we look harder at this fish ? I dont know, i dont target them. As i said, putting it out there.
