vogon reacted to HB tragic in How to: Daiwa Double Clutch lures?
Have had good success with twitching and pausing as well as a slow constant retrieve. Also scored some good fish kicking up plumes while bouncing them off the bottom. While they are rated to around 2-3 metres depending on the size you use I have also used them in shallow water with high sticking my rod. A great lure with potential to catch numerous species 😉. Good luck with using them. Regards HBt.

vogon got a reaction from AuusieDave in Catching Mullet info wanted
I caught 7 on a Gulp jigging shrimp, between the foot bridge & the mouth of the Onk last winter, they were brilliant eating fresh.
They may have recently entered the Onk though.

On Yorkes I use size 4 for YFW & they catch other species as well, even small stuff.
I put the point of the hook in at the base of the underside of the tail and thread them down the hook & come out in the head. This also serves to help keep the body on better.
Hope this is helpful

vogon reacted to AquaticResearch1 in Full media release: Safeguarding our future snapper stocks
Something needed to be done, and unfortunately the lag in the internal processes made it take this long.
Opening up the previously restricted zones is weak imo. Let's take it bloody seriously and let the stocks recover instead of doing some musical chairs swaps of spots.
If anyone followed the management of the prawn industry, where the fishery was closed entirely for a period before resuming, the stocks bounced back well But still got hit hard by the reopening.
Snapper will take longer, and without further amendment we'll end up in the same place we are now once both sides of the fishery (pro and rec) begin to rape it to the point that got us here in the first place.
I highly doubt we reach the virgin biomass % targets with these measures tbh.
Would rather them bite the bullet and restrict both pro and rec fishing to bare minimum and get them back on track. It is a major ecologically important species, not just a commodity.

vogon reacted to Territory Lad in Wading Tub
Over the last 12-18 months I've got right into my wading and thought I'd have a crack at making my own tub. After a bit of looking around at other set ups, I figured it was best to just dive in and see what happened.
The basic idea was I wanted to be able to carry more than one rod, be mobile amd be organised. After a trip to the hardware store and the local boating store, I had all the parts I needed. Within an afternoon it was done!
Generic UV stablised create, electrical conduit for axels, marker bouys / poly floats for wheels and all secured with S/Steel bolts, washers and nylocks.
Below is a selection of on the job photos.
Overall it works really well. The rod holders allow me to carry multiple rods all rigged differently. This does two things, (1) when I get a season ending wind knot, I just bench the rod and grab another. No lost time not fishing! (2) It speeds up my apprenticeship as I can run multiple options simultaneously and figure out what works in different scenarios.
Only issue I have found is having the reels face inwards takes up a fair amount of room inside the tub and ironically, the reels get wetter inside the tub than outside. This is because when I land a fish, drops of water fall off the net which I dump in the tub during hook removal etc. I tried facing them "backwards" and outside the tub, seems to solve the problem.
1st planned upgrade is a small esky, big enough to fit a YFW in the 30-35cm range!!

Clear line. I use the same knot tied to a Mustad Fastach Clip

vogon reacted to TommisnSalmon in A good mono to mono knot please.
For mono to mono, definitely double uni or double blood. For braid to mono I'd go an improved albright (see Paulus Fishing's version).
Plenty of good light flurocarbon mainlines though for running straight through mono. Some of the newer good ones are super thin (similar to cheap braids in diameter) and cheaper than braid. Great for when it's windy (apparently all the time now) or when you're feeling too lazy to tie leader knots.

I assumed it was braid to mono. Yes why bother!

vogon reacted to southie THE BANGA in A good mono to mono knot please.
If using mono line no real need for a leader.
I use 3lb straight through fluorocarbon and love it for flicking plastics and hardbodies.
If you feel like you need a leader i use the albright knot. Its simple to tie and nice and strong.
I prefer this knot as its easy to tie with my chunky fingers...

That's an even better idea.
Trying to tie knots with light line with my sausage fingers drives me nuts

vogon reacted to Meppstas in Walleye in France & Spain..
**Not sure if this was the right place for this short article..
** No I'm not over there as much as I would love to be.. My good friend in France (Mepps) sent me a couple of photos of some Walleye that he caught when he managed to get away from his job..
He rarely finds the time to get out and wet a line so it was good to see he finally found some time last weekend.. Walleye are found in lakes and rivers across Europe, these are a couple of little ones so he says..
cheers

This one was taken in France..
And this little fella was caught in a lake in Spain..

vogon reacted to Meppstas in This little photo book's off to France..
I just made up a 7"x 5" gloss photo book that will be heading off the France in a week or so when I receive it..
Snapfish had 50% of including extra pages so I though I'd make one up for a good friend in France who has helped me out for many years with plenty of quality spinners..
here's a few photos sorry about the quality as I took them of my computer screen but it will give you some idea of it.. I'm sure he'll like it.. & yes he knows I use hard body lures too..
In all there 60 pages in the book and it cost me $25-62 (including the postage) to Tassie.. will cost me around $12-$15 to post it to France..
cheers

vogon got a reaction from Territory Lad in Advice - family weekend escape - Fleurieu Peninsula
When the kids were little we used to head to Normanville & stay at the jetty Caravan Park, either camping or in a cabin. We always had a great time.
The beaches from Normy to Carrackalinga are great for kids & dogs.
You can beach fish from Lady Bay all the way to Carry, Second Valley Jetty is not far away & neither are the rocks at Myponga Beach.
The cafe at Normy Jetty has recently changed hands & is apparently great & Yankallila Bakery is famous for its goods.
I think it is a better spot than Victor, less crowded & less commercial.
Cheers
