Squid Inc. reacted to karlmeredith in netboats in restricted zones
i have just been talking to a neighbor and apparently the Pro fishermen are now wanting access to some of the restricted zones up around Price and Port Clinton and Port Arthur  ,in particular the area around the price beacon which has had a restricted zone for at least 8 years (i have lived here that long) and another zone up towards the top of the gulf

The Pro boats get away with going there now whats to stop them if restrictions are lifted???

The State government wants to manage recreational fishers to the point it wont be worth going fishing but let Pro fishermen do what they want?

correct me if i am wrong but seems wrong to me

A few catties from the Torrens in the last month.
1 from another stretch, completely different colour to the ones closer to home!!
All on bait, while fishing for carp.... Bread, earthworms... And a couple on yabbie tail.
They're good sport on the 1lb gear!
But do seem to burn themselves out after the first big run.
There's definately no shortage of them around the city!! Think my best this month was 5 in an hour.
Might have to try a lure or two some time for them!

Yes it works in all types of water, this is the same one that's been sent to Africa & several other countries that struggle with polluted water....
Check this out it may give you some idea of it's usefulness.

I'm not one for carrying backpacks or drink bottles when river fishing as I like to fish as light as possible. This small item is an essential part of my river fishing.. it's called the Life Straw.

Here's what I carry with me at all times when trout fishing the rivers since suffering a severe stomach & bowel infection from drinking the water direct from the rivers here in Tassie..I finished up being on a special Government authorised script for two weeks. It's called a Life Straw and it's used in many countries around the world where the drinking water is polluted. It filters 99.99999% of bacteria etc out of the water as you suck the water up through it.. I've always drank the water straight out of the rivers when trout fishing until the day I became very ill. It hit me around 5 hours after getting home from the Leven River after a fishing session I had. I did as I normally did and that was to drink the water straight from the river not realising ( or even thinking) about the run off from the paddocks that had cattle in them. We had quite a bit of rain several days earlier and I didn't even give it a thought.. I do now and that's why I spent $28.00 on the Life Straw which I have used for nearly two trout seasons now. It can filter 1000 litres of water so it's will last me quite a few seasons yet..

Had a crack at preserving tuna this arvo. It is a little time consuming but tastes great and can be kept for over a year so perfect for when you have plenty of tuna.

Ingredients are sea salt, water, Italian mixed herbs, olive oil and tuna.

All you do us boil large chunks of tuna in a salt water solution which is 35 grams of salt to one litre of water.

Once the tuna is cooked flake it into sterile jars, cover with oil and some herbs to taste. Boil your jars for a couple of hours to complete sterilisation process. Apparently it gets to it full taste potential after 1 month in the jar but damn it tastes great straight up. Perfect for on crusty bread or in pasta.

Spent many days casting Abus on Browns beach it takes a lot of practice casting into the wind on a dark night which makes it hard to see when to thumb.I used to take a spare spinning reel with me because it was only a matter of time before the dreaded birds nest.Practice makes perfect and you soon learn how to untangle the bloody thing which is a skill in itself.

As said they can take some practice but once learned you'll be happy
with them ,I used to set mine up by  attaching sinker and bait ,raise rod
tip in the air , say 8ft off ground/deck release spool and let drop to ground and
adjust cast control until the spool turns 1-1.5 turns after hitting the ground
without any thumb pressure on spool , then cast away with thumb pressure
at point bait  is about to contact water then let bait sink on it's own .
You really need to adjust every time you cast until you have done it a
while and get faster with you're thumb , different weight has a huge
difference on cast control setting as you'de imagine .

I had the same problems when I bought my first ABU 7000 many many years ago. My mate who has used these reels showed me how to set up & cast. I now almost exclusively use overhead reels from the baby versions to the larger TLD's, Penns etc.

My best advice is have someone who uses overhead reels show you how to set up & use the reel. Much easier then trying to explain here

    We all love fishing, right?

Apparently I don't like fishing any more - at least that's what I've been told by someone with more authority than me, but here is a ready to go fishing package - just hitch up, drop her in the water and go fishing the day you buy her!

Oh, and I meant drop the boat in the water - not your wife. Dropping wives in the water is apparently not appropriate and/or appreciated. And if you can buy a suitable wife - good luck to you. I've already bought and sold one wife, still paying for the later model and have no desire to find out what it would cost me to sell her (the wife, not the boat).

And the best news is you don't need a big tow vehicle - she can be towed behind a typical family sedan like a Commodore or Falcon! The boat is also the right size for towing behind a family sedan.

You might have guessed I'm really disappointed to be selling my boat, but my wife has decided that the caravan is more important, so this great boat package simply has to go.

She (the boat, not my wife) has seen very little use due to business commitments and my wife's desire to travel in the caravan instead of going out fishing. And let's be honest - if I don't sell the boat to get the caravan SWMBO wants, then I'm not likely to see much use out of my wife either.

A really comfortable and stable boat - the cabin is big enough for two to sleep in and there is heaps of storage space inside the cabin and also on deck. Rock solid fibreglass hull.

Please note that these are all words that should not be applied to your wife - comfortable, stable (as if!), big enough to sleep two, heaps of storage space and rock solid. These descriptions are only about the boat. Please, you have to believe me!

This package is complete and ready to go and includes:

    - UHF (27 MHz) radio

    - all required offshore safety equipment including life jackets, flares, bucket, EPIRB and so on (ask me nicely and I'll even give you a life jacket for the missus)

    - Lowrance LCX-37C colour combination chartplotter and fishfinder (not that you need a chartplotter - apparently wives always know where you are and where you should be)

    - Bimini with clear sides and front

    - rod holder on the bimini

    - bait board (never used, at least not by my wife)

    - bilge pump (electric)

    - 100 litre underfloor fuel tank (which I will make sure is full)

    - Sea Trail galvanised trailer (with new winch)

    - PortaPotti toilet (for the wife's comfort and your peace and quiet)

    - anchor (should not be attached to any person, especially your wife)

She (again, the boat, not the wife) is equipped with a 90HP Evinrude E-Tec outboard, which starts first time, every time. Heaven only knows what life would be like if my wife's mouth was as reliable as this motor.

A 20 litre drum of E-Tec oil (worth over $300) also comes with the boat because we all know how important proper lubrication is and so you won't have to worry about buying lube, I mean oil, any time soon!

As an added bonus we'll even throw in our tow tube which is shaped like a jet ski and you'll also get the tow bridle and tow rope. Capable of carrying three people, this tube is a bundle of fun and gets comments everywhere it goes.

I have found that the tow rope is long enough to effectively mute your wife's screams too!

This is the advice that Abu gave in their owners manuals several years ago. Unfortunately this can damage many newer style reels, including Abus.

The side tension knob should be adjusted so you feel what is called "perceptible float" which means you notice slight side to side movement in the spool. Some reels have tension knobs on both sides which are used to center the spool, but should still be adjusted so you feel that perceptible float.

Using those tension knobs to control the speed can damage the spool shaft and bearings.

Some reels have magnetic braking which is controlled by a knob on the sideplate, sometimes by a sliding switch. Many reels have centrifugal casting control which consists of small plastic brake blocks which sit on metal spindles alongside the spool. This can be adjusted by adding, removing or changing the size of the blocks.

Squid Inc has pretty much said it, and some reels do cast easier than others. If you are leaving off thumbing the spool when it hits the water it may be too late as the line has already started to slow and overrun itself, try lightly thumbing the spool lightly once the bait starts slowing on it's downward progression, dont leave it until it hits the water.

Most of all be smooth in your cast, not jerky and practice practice practice

The old proven method was to tighten your spool tension so it slowly feeds out under the sinkers weight and hits the deck and not fuzz the reel. This is good advice for the beginner and also smooth constant weight on the rod tip as you proceed with the casting action. Just requires practice and conditions can also play a part like heavy baits and head winds etc. Once you get more proficient you will find yourself backing off the spool tensioner which will aid with more distance. Hope this helps.
    Cheers

I used to head to the local oval and practice casting with my old Abu many years ago.
Got a few looks from people, but who cares.
I just kept throwing sinkers and adjusting the spool tension until I felt it was right.
I recon I got to throwing around 100m or so, its good practice.
When doing the real deal you need to hit the brakes when you hit the water or 'you know what' will happen.

    Sometimes they breed.
Every now and then I separate a combo to clean and service.
Then for some reason, the reel gets a new rod, and the rod gets a new reel, and they multiply.
Is it just me, or is this a common problem?

Smoked some tuna today. Here's my simple recipe. Tastes good with a cold beer.

    1/2 cup of salt
    1/2 cup of brown sugar
    2 teaspoons of dried oregano
    Squirt of soy sauce
    Dash or Chilli powder
    2 litres of water approx
Tuna as much or as little as you want. Adjust ingredients accordingly.

    METHOD:
Place sugar, salt, oregano, soy and Chilli into a container and dissolve with hot water. Once dissolved add enough cool water to cover tuna. Add tuna to brine solution and refrigerate for 5 hours. Once 5 hours is up smoke it.
