  1. My ultimate rod / combo that i just cant get enough of at the moment is

6'10 G loomis NRX with a 2500 Shimano Sustain spooled with 10lb power pro with 12lb suffix fluorocarbon leader.

it's caught all the bread and butter species that we fish for, it's so light yet so strong (snapper, squid, whiting, snook, garfish and have bought up a 8-10kg gummy shark which i ended up loosing after i had it in the landing net)

Would love to put a Stella on it but cant justify $1000+ for recreational fishing.

  2. I was pretty confident about the Fish offal / blood etc. cheers for that Kon.

However, this is a new one that i haven't read before....

    • Never use leftover or uncooked seafood sold for human consumption, such as prawns, abalone, crabs, oysters, as bait or berley as it has the potential to spread aquatic diseases. It should be noted that these types of aquatic diseases have no impact on humans.

I must admit, i've bought prawn shells and heads on the boat before for berley.

I'm a little dumb founded with this one to be honest. i would have thought once the prawns have been boiled that any diseases would be 'cooked off' so to speak.

Well, now i know and will be dumping the left overs in the bin.

But thinking about it, whats with the crabs also??

You think the fish (whether its a snapper, squid, octopus etc) ask if the crabs or prawns have any diseases before they attack them??

Seriously!! What a load of rubbish.

  3. From my understanding, as long as its all FISH products, you can put as much blood, guts, flesh in the water as you want.

In terms of the oil process, i'd imagine it'll be a similar process to crushing olives for olive oil.

They'll get all the fish offal (because i doubt it'll all be 'tuna'), crush it and then squeeze the juice out of it.

depending on what type of fish they put, will depend on the colour.

Like the olive oil, there is all types of colours yellow, greens etc

My 2 cents about it anyway

  4. Im in the same boat as PP.

I dont think colour matters a whole deal. its about technique and being in the zone.

I've watched the pro's out at marino a number of times and i guarantee you, they wont spend 20-30 bucks on jags with uv, fluorescent rubbish etc. they know the areas they hang around in, they have the techniques and know the water column where they'll sit and will probably have the $2 to $5 jags on their hand lines.

they throw out about 3 hand lines and i reckon i've definitely seen green and pink ones thrown out but are the old school cloth types.

In saying this i do spend upto $30 bucks on jags if i like the look / shape of it :D its an addiction haha.

Dad and i have MANY jags in our tackle box (old, new, fish like etc) but we alternate between about 4 now. If a squid is REAL finicky, i'll drop to a small 1.5 as Kelvin mentioned.

I've used 1 squid jag for that many years that the side 'fins' have disappeared but it still catches squid in abundance and cant find them anymore. I bought atleast 5 in all colors at the time and only have 2 left:(

if any one knows a shop that still has them, i'd be keen to stock up again

  5. Not a lot of weed around the Brighton Jetty these days, unless you were in the North Western corner of the 'T'.

I would say yesterday would have been quite busy down there and as a first time Squidder, you probably stayed away from the crowded end and stuck to the middle of the jetty....

This area is all sandy (not saying you cant catch squid here, just a fair lesser chance) which unless you know the area, you would never know due to the murky waters still.

I reckon you let excess line out and the jag was sitting on the sandy bottom in yesterdays case.

  6. I've always been skeptical about a fishing licence.

to be honest i've been waiting to see when it'll come in.

Heres a few questions i'll raise and my opinion.

The ratio between fisheries officers to fishers is pathetic.

How would spending money on a fishing licence, help the officers monitor check on people who have one?

how many fisheries offices are there in SA right now?

if there are 300,000 fishers and say 100 fisheries officers thats 1:3000. They are ridiculous odds.

Its 3 times what Leicester city were paying to win the EPL last year.......

In order to have a presence in the field, they'd have to employ atleast another 500 officers. and STILL you will never cover the entire state.

In all my years at the boat ramp, i've never seen a fishing charter checked.

Who says they haven't been doing the right thing just because they have a licence?

In 15 years of driving, I've been pulled over a few times because i was being an idiot. Sure they check your licence then.

But i'm sure there are people who have never been pulled over because they are doing the right thing. Who checks their licence?

In 10 years of owning a boat, 3 times i've had my boat / catch checked and once have had my boat approached by fisheries on the water.

NOT ONCE did any of them ask for my boat licence.

I've been saying for years its not ONLY the rec's that are to blame.

Just because you own a boat, it doesn't mean you catch bag limits of fish every time you go out.

    the pro's RAPE everything.

it's happened to the blueys a few years ago, it's happened to the garfish, it's happened to the snapper and it'll keep happening as that is their job. they are like the miners of the ocean. if there is no more gold in this spot, they'll dig somewhere else...

3 years ago a mate of mine caught a decent amount or snapper off the shipping channel.

since then, i have caught maybe 3 snapper, the largest being 42cm and not in the area we were in.

the difference between a rec and a pro is we TRY to catch snapper, the pros WILL catch snapper, its just a matter of how many.

In the Gulf of SV, it's all pretty flat, the only way to house more fish is to build it.

There are 2 tyre reefs, the Stanvac blocks, Norma, a few other barges and old ships. These are all 'man made reefs'.

With out these, we wouldnt have any structure locally.

I think its time for the government to pull there finger out and make some more artificial reefs rather than pick on the rec's and coincide with the pro's all the time.

There are too many people putting themselves at risk trying to build they're own to try get away from the 'crowd'.

Build multiple reefs and people can choose where to go and ultimately give the fish a 'home'.

The saying goes BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME.

    Same goes for the fish.

    Thats my thoughts anyway

  7. pretty sad.

    feel for the bloke.

I can understand not insuring a small tinny but surely once you get to 15ft and above you pay for piece of mind.

A 36foot anything u HAVE to insure, no matter how old it is...

  8. So if you did a bit of research on the website prior to asking a question that people (majority fisher people on the website, since its a fishing forum), you would have learnt that you introduce yourself first, tell us a bit about yourself, where your interest lies, then ask the question.

It's like a being an atheist and a Jehovah coming to your door preaching.

You're going to get 1 of 4 things happen

1-A door slammed in your face

2-You're ears bitten right off and being told to get stuffed

3-Depending on the person that opens the door, you may not be able to walk to the gate that you came in from or

4-Perhaps 1-5% will actually listen to what you have to say cos they were doing nothing at home

Did i just put my philosophizing hat on there?

I might have to reconsider going to uni if they are giving away degrees!!

I'm feeling philosophical so i might just answer part of your question.

In life, you tend to do things that you enjoy or like doing.

I like fishing, so i go fishing

I like watching and playing sport, so i watch and play sport.

I don't like watching boxing, but i like UFC

I don't like watching golf, but i'll play golf with mates.

I don't like any of the CSI / law and order bulls**t shows, as i believe they teach or provide the clues on how to kill / murder others, so i don't watch it.

Everything in life is a choice.

Why did you choose philosophy as a degree and not marine biology?

    Its a choice.

I choose to go fishing because instead of buying fish from a market or shop (and only god knows where the hell they buy it from or how long its stayed in the shop for), i go catch myself a feed and spend quality time with my dad on the water relaxing and listening to the ocean....

    You get the drift......... :boat:

  9. Sounds like someone has had a mental blank on what a reasonable answer would be for an assignment......perhaps?

Soooo, you cant think for yourself, so why not get others to answer the question for you?

    Smart, but lazy!

But once you get in to the real world, 'the work force' you'll need to think for yourself...... or drown!

If you had any interest in fishing, you'd come up with an answer.

Maybe get on a charter and figure it out for yourself.

  10. The summer wasnt great for me on the reds front, only managing 1 fish after the ban (none in 2015). :(

This winter however, i'm making up for a dismal summer and having the bestarrow-10x10.png winter whiting seasons to date :D

    Been out 7 times and managedarrow-10x10.png (over a 3 month period), and we've managed to get 1 bag limit of 24, 20, 18, 15, 12, 5 and another 17 on the weekend.

Some big squid were also around this weekend. We managed 23. Got them homearrow-10x10.png and the asky had a bit of weight to it...they ended up weighing 11kg's all up
plenty freeze bags with only 2 in them. I'll be cleaning dinner when i get home tonight.

Plenty to go around for the family and future bait on the reds, crabs and future whiting aka leather jacket sessions.

In amongst the whiting we are bringing home 3 or 4 red mullet everytime and leather jackets are just driving us mental.....

So this has been the best winter for me personally :D
I will put up a photo of tonights dinner tomorrow :P

Below pic was the 20 whiting session B)

  11. I use my combo for everything and absolutely love it. I want to buy the same rod but very hard to find now.

G-Loomis Bronzback GLX matched with 4000 Ci4 Stradic, 10lb fins braid.

My other rod that (i was thinking of selling) is a Shimano T-Curve Lucanis Jig Spin Light matched with a 2500 daiwa tierra, 12lb mono. Its not a 'fish specific' combo as such but I have used it and caught snapper to 6kg, squid, whiting, gar on it with ease.

I just love the Loomis rod and would buy another in a heart beat for the right price...
