Cheers mate. I saw a brand new old model dorado A-rounder sold on FeeBay a few weeks ago.
I think I like the old school coz it was all new and shiny when my tackle obsession first started, but I couldn't afford it all at the time!!!

Yeah mate. Don't muck around using tackle stores as the middle men for parts or even to send a reel away for a service. It's heaps better to go direct to shimano or daiwa, I've found both companies great to deal with for parts, although daiwa were a bit slow with reel servicing.

rooboy123 reacted to storm boy in suitable braid for overhead reel lure flicking
There are a number of factors involved in controlling the cast from an overhead reel. Various different factors work together when casting, such as bearing oil viscosity, brake blocks, mag brakes, spool tension and last but not least, line diameter.
Line diameters are an important consideration when casting overhead reels any reasonable distance. If the line is too thick, the effective spool diameter (circumference) drops too quickly, and allows less line out per revolution. This will have a braking effect on the reel as the line has to try to increase the spool RPM in order to keep the same lure speed. Reel control is good, but distance suffers. In actual practice, air resistance will have an effect as well.
If line of too thin a diameter is used, then the effective spool diameter does not decrease quickly enough to keep the line taut as the lure gradually slows. It is a matter of balancing line diameter with other forms of braking, be that blocks, mags, oils etc in order to get the best distance and best control of the spool. When a reel is correctly tuned, or set up, it will not need any "thumbing" except when the lure or sinker touches down.

I used to use braid on overheads when casting lures for salmon, but not any more. Braid definitely has better feel, but does not seem to cast as nicely as mono off an overhead. Fixed spool is different, with braid definitely offering better distance.

Abu 5000 and 6000 size reels are ideal for salmon off the beach. My favourite mono sizes are 0.28mm (nominally 8lb) for the 5000 and 0.32-0.35 (12-15lb) for the 6000. Appropriate braid sizes would be roughly 20lb (5000 size) and around 30lb or slightly higher on the 6000. You can go up in line size, with a reduction in distance, or down in size, with a somewhat greater tendency for overruns. With decent knots, good 8 lb mono is more than a match for salmon up to at least the 4kg mark. A full length casting leader of heavier mono such as 30lb (wrapped several times around the spool) is needed to prevent snap offs when casting. It also assists when landing the fish.

As a last general tip for overheads, getting rid of the levelwind is one of the best things you can do. It will increase casting distance, reduce tendencies for overruns, and will be one less maintenance issue for the reel. The downside is getting used to manually levelling the line, but IMHO it is well worth the effort.

Hey mate, you can use gulp worms as bait. I've used them on a paternoster rig like bait before. Even used this way you can still keep them moving.

I've got a Samaki drifter for my spin rod. Sounds like its similar in action to some of the others mentioned here. It's rated 3-6kg with a nice tip for bait fishing, and can handle bigger fish quite well. I find I don't use it all that much as I prefer overhead gear for whiting out in the boat. Cheers

Pillies for sure. If you can grind up your fish frames I would use them too. Especially tommies and salmon, that have good blood and oil. Depending on the target species and where you use the blocks, old bread, cat biscuits black and gold cat food, can also go in!!

rooboy123 got a reaction from Crusher in THE QUICK TRIP REPORT THREAD... (post away)
Had to run the brother in law down to the plane in Lincoln. I thought it would be a good chance to go squiding on the way home. After talking to the boys at spot on in Lincoln, they suggested Louth Bay would be better than North Shields. The wind was pretty strong when I got there, so I gave the jetty a miss and headed to the rocks that were a bit more sheltered. After an hour of casting, and five colour changes on the jigs, it was bang, bang, bang with three quick squidlys. The biggest one had a tube of 32cm, so not a bad size. As quick as they came on, it was back to nothing for half an hour. By this time it was 4:00 and high tide. I thought the wind had dropped a bit, so I tried the jetty. It was still windy enough on the jetty so I only stayed for bout 15 mins, but managed another squid.Nothing spectacular, but good fun for a couple hours, and proof that it's always worth going for a flick whenever the chance arises The wife wondered why I was so keen to go for a drive to the airport!!!

Yep. Used them for salmon. Spun it with steady retrieve and used a hopping soft plastic retrieve, both worked. Only had one jig and lost it to some reef bottom bashing. I've been looking at getting some from the states, or is there somewhere local I can grab a handfull for a good price.

That rod is a thing of beauty. Porn indeed!!Nice look to it, and incredibly light. My wife doesn't understand why I get excited over things like that. Doesn't matter if it's fishing gear, cars, guns or even furniture. It's no so much the bling that draws me in, it's the look of quality in a product. I hope you do get to purchase it and spend many hours not only marveling at its beauty, but also slaying many fresh and salt water fishies with the combo!!

I like baitcasters in the boat for whiting fishing. It's easy to click your thumb to let line out when bobbing around. Also like the one handed operation for casting and trolling for salmon trout n snook

If you're after mid to high range Shimano or diawa reels, I'd be looking at overseas websites instead of eBay. With our dollar being so strong against the yen, Japanese sites like plat would be worth a look. It's probably only the higher priced reels that are worth worrying about, as local shopping is a lot more competitive than it was 5-10 years ago.

rooboy123 reacted to ShimsMan in Home Made Lure
Hey guys n gals,Been doing a little research, particularly into catching flatties and sweep etc and settled on a DIY spinner lure and made it from a nice shiny stainless teaspoon. The beads can be swapped out for any type, and the lure can be set up for any bait by changing the hook size. In the pic, I'm only using wire for visibility, I actually used an 80LB polyester thread for the short line and 10lb fluoro on the long line on the finished lure, the thread gives much better action than when I tested it with 40lb mono, but you could use 20lb mono and it'd probably work well too. I used the thread because I have it for my leatherworking. Here's how it's done:1. Cut the head off the spoon with boltcutters, hacksaw, leatherjacket or whatever. Keep both parts.2. Drill a ~3mm hole at the end where the handle was, or both if you want to have the option of using it as an inline as well.3. De burr the hole(s) using a bigger drill or a countersink, stainless burrs up like crazy when drilled and WILL damage your line otherwise.4. Sand and file the cut off end of the spoon head so that it's smooth like the tip of the spoon, again, this is for keeping the line from getting caught etc.5. Tie the main line of the lure together with the 2 swivels and beads, don't forget to thread the spoon on after the first bead,(thread the thick end on, the one you cut the handle off) then put on the second bead and tie the second swivel as close as you possibly can.6. Snell a hook, then tie the line onto the lower swivel, make it no longer than about 100-125mm max.7. Bait up, fish and enjoy! I tested mine in the bathtub and it doesn't need too much speed; you should be able to work it by jerking and pausing, or even just a medium speed straight retrieve.Remember that spoon handle I told you to keep? cut it a little shorter and stick it in a vice; then use heavy pliers to twist it into a spiral. A couple holes, split rings and a treble and you now have 2 lures from 1 spoon! Pics, so that it makes sense

Hard to say but In those conditions ie. 20/25kph wind and strong current it was doing well. The remote has a scale of 1 to 10 for power output and it was sitting around 3 1/2.So not that hard......and I didn't move off the mark the whole time. The MinnKota has a "Maximiser" which means its really efficient.I run 2 batteries for my electric so I'm pretty safe power wise.

My mate has one of those fin nor reels. He likes it, and I don't think he has had any trouble with it. They are heavy, but sometimes you want a big heavy and strong reel. Can't use these fancy ci4, air rotor, zion body bream reels for everything!!!!!!I know he took braid off his and went back to mono, but I think that was a personal thing, no fault of the reel. Don't know about the rods mate. To me they are a personal choice, you might not like what I do. I would probably check out a Wilson or silstar power tip. Have fun shopping!!
