used to build all my own rods way back, mainly because it was cheaper than buying the shop ones. Gee we used to dream of owning an IMX 6 rod but at over a $1000 well out of our range these days the cheapest rods are made with IMX Materials hahaha The other great point about it is, it's great fun to catch fish on a rod you have built. Oh another plus, you can choose how many and place the guides where "YOU!" want Plus have the backbone the right way round Loved real cork grips too so my special rods always had Cork and my everyday sea stuff the spongy stuff
Once you have finished you will realize just how easy it is to wrap a rod and i'm sure many more will follow

being in a club for most of my youth and going through bags like, pheww that stinks and in the bin it goes haha
So i started making my own!
One thing though you need access to a sewing machine. You just buy a cheap $3 blue tarp. Have a look at the Alvey bag and do the same. I used to make one big pocket for fish and one smaller pocket for spare rigs and bait.
You just fold the cut to size big pocket part in half, lay another bit of tarp the size of the side pocket you want lining it up with the bottom, then stitch down each side and across the bottom, the shoulder strap just fold a length of tarp stitch it up and stitch to bag. Hey Presto done! I used to get one bag from the small tarp. Cheap in anyone's book and believe me, you will go though them if you fish like we used too

when in the fishing club years ago, on the rocks i would use spark plugs as sinkers, they open up when caught and 90% of the time you get your hooks back, just hook another spark plug to the loop and go again. You will be surprised how they don't get snagged as much too, must be there shape! i also used to have the hook at least a meter off the bottom to try and keep it out of the weed.
But most of the time we float fished, use one of those snapper style floats with the lead on the bottom tie a bit of wool on the main line to set the depth, check a knot site how to tie it. Let the float sit on a swivel to cast then tie ya leader to the swivel with a hook on it, a foot leader should do and it's then like having an un-weighted bait sitting in the water
best of luck mate

thanks guys, you would need to ask Weaver what gear he was using as i'm not sure. The lure though is a "Doofdoc" a mate of Weavers makes them a very good Cod lure and well proven have a look at said lures name on facebook to see some of the monsters Chicky catches on his "Doofdoc" lures err thats "cod food" for those in the know!

This video has been added to my youtube channel mainly for my overseas friends but i guess some of you guys wouldn't have seen it yet too, so!
Here is another of my old fishing videos from 2008, rehashed for my youtube channel. This time watch as my mate Lucas Weaver ( i think you guys might know him ) catches a monster 130cm Cod in Australia's largest river, the mighty "Murray River". We were out for a mid week fish and 10 minutes into our troll i got snagged. As we stopped the boat Weaver wound his lure in and was hit by this monster Cod. Weaver writes for a few Australian Fishing Magazines and his story and the photos i took for him, made a double page photo spread. So sit back and watch as Australia's largest freshwater fish is caught and released. Music used this time is from my fellow band members home studio, Rick on mandalin, guitar's and vocals and Jake on his magical keyboard Thanks Rick & Jake Costin

Hi all, well 2013 has been a very slow year for Snapps and myself fishing wise and i thought i'd fill a few of Snapps mates in on whats happened.Snapps had a heart attack 3 years back and some stints put in, also for the past 3 years he has been waiting to get a complete knee replacement after having %@#* it with sport as a youth. Knee op happened this year and after 3 months of recovery he was about to go back to work but had another heart attack last week, resulting in a 3 way by-pass op straight away, then 2 days later had a Lung collapse. So my buddy is in hospital recovering at the moment and not feeling the best, although a lot better than last week. I know he reads the site all the time and i'm sure when he can he will look in and find this and it will cheer him up a bit So to Snapps, mate HTFU ya got 2 lungs get well soon buddy and we will be out hitting those Reds and KG's at Pt Pirie, the Bream, Mulloway and YF in those very special creeks we love to fish sooner than you know To his lovely wife Bec our thoughts are with you and the family, chin up he'll be home soon cheers chuck

Last year my son went to one of our fav spots and caught no fish, he did find 10 yes read that right 10 Mulloway heads on the bottom of the creek, we were dumb founded and had no idea why anyone would take 10 Mulloway and just cut the heads off Snapps went to the same spot 2 weeks later and did not see a fish, BUT! was harassed by a big seal. It followed them all over the creek! he gave up after a couple of hours and headed back to the ramp and as he is pulling the boat out low and behold there is the seal, it had even followed him back to the ramp.so the plot thickens, no fish at all in the creek, fish heads on the bottom and a seal! well this year snapps and i have had 3 trips to our spot and we have not seen 1 fish, yep read that again not 1 fish of "Any Kind" yep not even a shitty Why?oh we didn't see the seal this year either, but then again when the larder is empty why would you stay cheers chuck
