mrfish reacted to Meppstas in My PB wild brown trout for 2020/21 season so far..
I've been meaning to put this on the site for some time, forgot all about it..
Not for the want of trying I finally caught and released a decent size wild brown trout for a change. Even better was the fact it was my personal best of the season so far. Still hoping to break the one kilo mark & better before the season ends on the last Sunday closest to the end of April 2021. The larger three rivers (Meander, Mersey & Leven) I fish do hold a few trout well over the kilo size, it's just a matter of being in the right place at the right time.
     cheers
    Adrian

the shimano sonics at BCF are good. 7ft 2-4 kg, there is a soft plastic model and a bait model. both have good action and are light. I think they are about 70$

I finally got around to giving one of two of Brayden's hard body lures ( 41mm 4g Brown trout pattern) a go today in the Mersey River in dull overcast conditions and very clear water..
the lure worked a treat picking up a brown & a rainbow trout in quick time.. the fishing was tough today with a low moving in, I did hook and lose two trout on it as well.
They're a great action light weight lure, very impressed with it.. here's a couple of pic;'s..
    cheers
    Adrian...

The brown was the first that fell to the lure..

Then not long after a rainbow was landed..

Anywhere on the bottom of yorkes is potentially good. Stenhouse bay jetty would be a great place to start, you could camp at marion bay and explore the bottom end . Dont rule out salmon in summmer either, Have seen massive schools on yorke peninsula in January before. If no salmon then should be tommie, squid, mullet  etc to keep you occupied.

mrfish got a reaction from doobie in Release Weights
I imagine survival rates for release weights are quoted/suggested with inference to survival rates observed in studies where they release the captured fish back to depth in  cages. There are a few studies that use this technique on snapper to assess post release survival rates from depths that may cause baratrauma.

I have been catching some impressive gummies around Edithburgh.Try the rips around Saltana Point around dusk.Use squid heads on a running rig.I know its not against the law to catch and keep females but after gutting a good size female a few years ago and finding over 30 pups happily swimming around inside her,i have made it my rule not to keep females. The one I am holding here is a male.

mrfish reacted to Plectropomus in bruising on beach mulloway -- any theories??
Thanks Mr Fish. That report will make interesting reading! I have not done a proper survey of photos (presence/absence of bruising "rash" +location+ month) and it is sometimes hard to know if the picture in an internet post (say, "tackletactics.com") is a reliable indicator of location, but it certainly seems most common in SA West Coast Fish. Not just there, though, the ones below are Salt Creek, Murray Mouth and (allegedly) Victoria (the smaller one with white fishing rod). I have not seen any (yet) in pics from WA, NSW/SEQ, or South Africa (where they call them "kob"). I have located the contact of a parasitologist in New Zealand (ex-SA) who I will email pics too for an opinion, too.

Dont know what the answer is, license with a test is really the only way to reach everyone....but then people will fish without a license so you still cant win. Bigger fines and more fisheries officers are required.
Was fishing easter monday at the local which was unusually busy. There's myself fishing barbless hooks and putting anything back that's not at least a cm over the limit to be sure im doing the right thing.......... then there's Groups of people spread out who all know each other all keeping everything they caught. From a distance i knew they were doing the wrong thing but from that far away i couldnt be 100% sure so i kept quiet a while and watched. then one of them walked past me to put a fish in a mates bucket and as suspected it was a 20 ish cm king george whiting. I told them loud enough for all the mates to hear that it wasnt legal size and it needs to go back...which he did put that one back ....but then they just kept keeping everything after that any way. Pissed me off so much and did leave a report with fishwatch .

Was painting up some more trout lures tonight and i stuffed the paint job on one of them. So instead of throwing it away i painted over it completely with black paint. Then decided to think outside the box...
Grabbed some pearl paint and well the photo speaks for itself. Well i think anyway 👌
So it is opaque black as the base. Pearl green top. With an pearl Magenta body and gold stripes...
I recko this will be one colour ill paint as one i will sell

mrfish got a reaction from Sykes in Soft plastics hurting fish. Help!
I fish the same lures and same areas a bit and havent had the problem so as mentioned you might just be unlucky, the bigger the school the more competition so the little fish are probably really competing for food and are more aggressive than usual. Perhaps try a plastic thats bigger or has  a thicker body, like the squidgy prawn imitation, or a longer flick bait.

mrfish reacted to Plectropomus in Koombooloomba Dam sooties
In the wild streams a 400mm fish is a good one, but they get very large and fat in the lowland dams, with fish over 50cm present. The Trophy sooty in the 2014 Tinaroo Barra Bash was 3.965 kg (not measured) when it was still a "kill and weigh" comp, and most of the fish in the 2018 comp were over 400mm and up to 490mm (not weighed, as it is now catch-photograph-and-release). There are far northern streams where you can catch sooties, barra, jungle perch and mangrove jacks in close proximity in the upper reaches, but nowadays crocs are an ever-present risk in those same places.
