hey good to hear from you again mickyj, dont worry to much over the size reel you are using as long as you happy with it. I have gone down the same path early days of lure fishing & braid line loved the 1000 size shimano's & others. I have upgraded in recent times & purchased a couple of 2500 sized reels somewhat for slightly heavier braids. Their has been a couple of write ups in the fishing mags over the last few months on why 2500 reels are better for light braids but I will stick to me 1000 sizes its a good buzz hearing those small spools spin on a good fish.

Hains Signature for sale on Gumtree, funny ad, worth a read. I bet a lot of boats are sold with the same words being uttered.

    We all love fishing, right?

Apparently I don't like fishing any more - at least that's what I've been told by someone with more authority than me, but here is a ready to go fishing package - just hitch up, drop her in the water and go fishing the day you buy her!

Oh, and I meant drop the boat in the water - not your wife. Dropping wives in the water is apparently not appropriate and/or appreciated. And if you can buy a suitable wife - good luck to you. I've already bought and sold one wife, still paying for the later model and have no desire to find out what it would cost me to sell her (the wife, not the boat).

And the best news is you don't need a big tow vehicle - she can be towed behind a typical family sedan like a Commodore or Falcon! The boat is also the right size for towing behind a family sedan.

You might have guessed I'm really disappointed to be selling my boat, but my wife has decided that the caravan is more important, so this great boat package simply has to go.

She (the boat, not my wife) has seen very little use due to business commitments and my wife's desire to travel in the caravan instead of going out fishing. And let's be honest - if I don't sell the boat to get the caravan SWMBO wants, then I'm not likely to see much use out of my wife either.

A really comfortable and stable boat - the cabin is big enough for two to sleep in and there is heaps of storage space inside the cabin and also on deck. Rock solid fibreglass hull.

Please note that these are all words that should not be applied to your wife - comfortable, stable (as if!), big enough to sleep two, heaps of storage space and rock solid. These descriptions are only about the boat. Please, you have to believe me!

This package is complete and ready to go and includes:

    - UHF (27 MHz) radio

    - all required offshore safety equipment including life jackets, flares, bucket, EPIRB and so on (ask me nicely and I'll even give you a life jacket for the missus)

    - Lowrance LCX-37C colour combination chartplotter and fishfinder (not that you need a chartplotter - apparently wives always know where you are and where you should be)

    - Bimini with clear sides and front

    - rod holder on the bimini

    - bait board (never used, at least not by my wife)

    - bilge pump (electric)

    - 100 litre underfloor fuel tank (which I will make sure is full)

    - Sea Trail galvanised trailer (with new winch)

    - PortaPotti toilet (for the wife's comfort and your peace and quiet)

    - anchor (should not be attached to any person, especially your wife)

She (again, the boat, not the wife) is equipped with a 90HP Evinrude E-Tec outboard, which starts first time, every time. Heaven only knows what life would be like if my wife's mouth was as reliable as this motor.

A 20 litre drum of E-Tec oil (worth over $300) also comes with the boat because we all know how important proper lubrication is and so you won't have to worry about buying lube, I mean oil, any time soon!

As an added bonus we'll even throw in our tow tube which is shaped like a jet ski and you'll also get the tow bridle and tow rope. Capable of carrying three people, this tube is a bundle of fun and gets comments everywhere it goes.

I have found that the tow rope is long enough to effectively mute your wife's screams too!

I took these photos last week from my back door at sunset, the air and sky was full of very heavy smoke from the 80+ bush fires that were burning away down here, we've now only got around 50 still going..
These were take over two nights.

also helps if when you are assembling rod if you set the piece of rod about to be joined slightly off centre & then with a light twist & push as you line up the guides if you have done this correctly you will not be able to straight pull the that piece of rod of the other to remove just reverse the above procedure. do not put any lubricant on the joints this may jam the pieces of the rod together.

Doubt it will eradicate them. Rabbits are still around and even rebuilding their numbers a bit.

Not sure if there will be a native fish boom to fill the ecological niche though. Carp are only one part of the problem with the Murray and not sure what capacity natives would have to breed up with low flows, limited flooding events, limited breeding stock, lack of snags and poor water quality. The only factor there that removing carp would help with is the water quality a little, and even then farm runoff, flow control and destruction of riparian vegetation is a bigger factor than the carp. The main reason carp are so prevalent is they can thrive under those conditions while natives don't so it may just be a case of having just as few natives and a much reduced carp population.

But if we can get a native stock rebuilding policy in place with supplementary stocking and enhanced recruitment through re-snagging, higher water flows and some flooding events getting rid of most the carp will definitely help.

Much harder to release something else that may become invasive since live specimens of species that might are banned from importation. But could you imagine some of the likely suspects, American black bass, giant wels catfish like the Spanish Ebro river, sturgeon, various sunfish species like bluegill, alligator gar and others? Might be great angling but all of those are highly invasive and would thrive in the slow warm conditions in the Murray.

Five bucks! I'd expect a three course meal if I were paying that much!...........Oh yeah, that's right, soup and dessert is included in that price! ;DThen I get my own gate key so's I can let myself in any time day or night, I have my own private ramps and floating pontoons, all with no waiting! Wash bays, cleaning tables, toilets, showers, barbeque and barbeque area, fridge, free tea and cofffee, floodlights operated on a timer so's I can see to launch and retreive in the dark, and all monitored by 24 hour video surveillance, so's I know while I'm out that my car and trailer is safely tucked away! Then they organise tea nights, monthly fishing competitions, trips away, Bream & Mulloway nights, swap meets. If I launch at North Haven once per month, over the period of the year it'd cost the same as my yearly membership!Yep, ya'd have to be crazy to join a boat club!

I have used light sticks before, but they're quite expensive. Now I use these little LED lights powered by button batteries. They come with plastic brackets that you can tape onto your rod, and then slide the light on when needed. There are cheap ones out there, but I've found the slightly more dear ones to be much better value.

As far as striking, I use circle hooks and set my drag with enough tension to set the hook but not allow my rig to dragged into the sea, no need to strike and set the hook, the fish do it themselves. I also use homemade rod holders that go deep into the sand, a short length of PVC is not enough to stand up to the pull of a decent fish IMO.

    Hey all,

Been a while since I have posted on here so I thought I'd post up a couple of pics of fish I have caught in the last couple months. This warmer weather has brought out the bugs and this makes for some fun dry fly action. Had a seven fish session, all in about an hour and a half, a few weeks back which was crazy as the fish were just smashing stuff off the surface

Did you ever notice a rusty old pole sticking out of the mud a couple of meters long on the eastern bank of the Onk a few meters south of the old railway bridge (now a path bridge) ever wondered where it went, well i'll tell you. Fly fishing around that area about 7 years back & i decided as it had been a bit slow that day & if i could get my fly close in on the deep side of the bridge pylon there might just be a bream there willing to eat the fly.
So having thigh waders on i stepped out into the water next to the the rusty old pole but found i needed to lean out just a bit further than i had waded to get the cast in & yes you guessed it it was one of those times your brain is saying don't do that but the desperation of of not having caught a fish for a few hours took over I put my hand out & put some weight on the pole & snap  in i go head first & I mean a full head first dive (lucky the water was nice & clear) it had been a mild day so on retrieving myself from the water it went from mild to bloody freezing, needless to say the walk back to the car after emptying the waders out was uncomfortable. Luckily I had a beach towel in car to dry off a bit & sit on for the short & wet drive home.

I have done some guiding here south of Adelaide mostly saltwater fly & some soft plastics (lures) fishing though, if you you could give the forum some idea (sorry pun not intended) of where you are having problems with your fishing I'm sure we could give you some hints without the expense.

I do struggle to understand what any proposal might constitute. Are we talking about a 'low' weir to catch the high tidal flows and retain the water volume, creating an artificial lake ? Hence preventing lower tidal movements from influencing the estuary? Really dont have enough information to provide an sort of objective opinion.

I would very much lean towards the 'precautionary principle' and suggest that such 'engineering' solution (weir) to the perceived 'problem' (lack of large recreational water body) could create more problems than good. Look how   the Murray Mouth is due to siltation.....low flows....over allocation of water resources  and a s**t load of weirs!!!!

An hypothetical Onk weir will exacerbate any effect of low outflows and silting buy providing a low-flow zone for silt to deposit and further preventing the winter storm surges from combining with seasonal winter flows, which naturally open up the system and remove sediment. Sure it will provide a nice lake in the short term but it will quickly fill up with silt and be useless. The problem lies upstream (Mt Bold & private dams) and the ongoing effects of our recent drought.

Further, from the perspective of an enviromentalist/recreational fisho (?!) any weir will very much interfere with any natural movement of fish and clearly be detrimental.

These folks are disillusionaly single minded. The bigger worry is what political influence do they have?

Hang on....the "Southern Times Messenger"..."News Corp". I've just over analysed this. Think we need to take their version of 'journalism' with a liberal dashing of salt.

They must be kidding. And if the government allows that to happen I will give up completely in the government. If people are that determined to "improve" the system for there own agenda while completely retarding the environment it astounds me.

We as fishers generally benefit when an environment is at its peak, functioning, generally, as nature intended; and as such we don't ask for procedures which would jeopardise the environment.

Surely the most sensible solution would be to give SA Water a kick in the ass and get them to release some heavy environmental flows from Clarendon.

To sand bag Adelaide's largest open mouthed estuary system would be utterly deplorable, especially since it is in direct contact with a sanctuary zone.
