Savagelip reacted to thefunkychicken in After a bit of an absence... three new rods.
Gday.Well it’s been a while since I’ve visited StrikeHook, the last few months have been flat out with work (and a bit of laziness thrown in) which can be both a good and bad thing. I’ve managed to get a line wet a few times but the results have been far from front page news. I have however been able to wrap a couple of threads on a few rods during the occasional late night.I thought I’d better make the Mrs a rod as I was getting a bit of that vibe from her… I wanted something that she will be able to catch Squid, Whiting, Snapper, etc with that will allow a bit of sensitivity but still be strong enough to not break due to accidents or high-sticking. I ended up going for a 6’6” graphite blank rated 12 to 18lb with Pacific Bay guides and a split grip setup for a spin reel. Being for a sheila, I used pink, purple and silver on the thread. I also got her a Baitrunner 2500 with 15lb braid which sits on nicely.I had two mates give me the old “build me a rod will ya mate”… so I did. Both of them are owners of rods built by me, one a spin rod and the other a batcaster. The one who has the spin rod wanted “pretty much the same thing but flasher” so we lifted his budget a little bit and went for a great blank (pretty much as good as they come) and some more than decent guides and reel seat. The other bloke who has the baitcaster wanted “the same thing exactly but set up for a spin rod”, so that’s what he got.St Croix SCV 6’6” 6-12lb 2piece, Pacific Bay reel seat, Fuji Alconite guides. Finished in an Aussie green and gold style of thing – which I don’t much like myself but that’s exactly what he wanted.MHX 6’6” 8-15lb 2piece. I used the same thread I used on his previous rod so he now has a nice matching pair. A Shimano Stradic 2500 (not Ci4) is going on the rod which will match very nicely. The next one in the works is one I’m greedily making for myself: a long and light spin rod to use for Whiting, Squid and Flathead from the beach, rocks or shallows. I should have it finished soon (just in time for bloody summer to be over). Photos of that will come soon - probably about August 2013!Cheers.

Here's a couple of batters I quite like:Tempura Batter1 egg1 cup ice cold water¾ cup flourPinch bicarb sodaBeat egg and water, add flour and bicarb. Do not overbeat.Beer Batterin a bowl combine plain flour and 1 stubbie COLD pale ale. (must be cold) make a cream-like consistency, add salt and pepper to taste, and Vegeta seasoning. (for those of you who havent heard of it, its available from most supermarkets near the chicken salt) Beat together and add 3-4 ice cubes and put in fridge for about ten minutes (this ensures when the batter hits the hot oil it will stay crispy and golden) Pat the fish dry and flour lightly. Dip in Cold batter and straight into VERY hot oil. Fry for 1-2 mins turning about half way through cooking. There are many different types of batter, all of them quite simple. Carbonated water is an alternative to beer, but the secret to any batter is to throw in a few ice cubes to get it really cold, and dont make it too thick.I also dust my fish in rice flour (lighter than normal wheat flour) prior to dunking in the batter. Rice flour is also an alternative to plain flour in the batter if you want something a little lighter. If you like spices, try a mix of sea salt, white pepper, chili flakes and chinese 5 spice. It's also suitable for items such as salt and pepper squid which is floured prior to cooking. It is also good to mix in with anything crumbed. For very delicate flavoured fish such as KG Whiting or Garfish, I wouldn't use a batter at all, but instead just a light dusting with flour, lightly fried, pinch of salt and squeeze of lemon. Save the batter for hardier flavoured fish.

my focus is the land based congestion there is a lot more room in the sea, same way the Boaties are exempt from the new shark reg's as long as you are 500 mts of shore you can use what you want.

Could be a fuel problem, water in fuel, breather, cracked hose, blocked fuel filter, fuel pump, blocked jet in carby for an example,Or could be a power pack, ignition lead, coil, spark plug breaking down under load, one of the sensors sending the power pack into limp home mode (rev. limiting), dodgy wiring or it could be something completely different.Start with the simple things and keep it simple, as it could be a cheap fix.

In my experience it's not that good to just run a reel under the tap, a heavy flow of water will often drive sand, salt and water into the reel where you don't want it. It can also wash away the oil in your bearings and levelwind gear, plus the old fibre washer drags on Abus perform very poorly when wet. I use one of those multi spray hose nozzles on the "mist" setting and just give the reel a very light spray after a session to get rid of sand or salt. Another good trick is to tighten the drag all the way when washing down to keep water out of the drag system, just don't forget to back it off for storage when the reel is dry otherwise you can compress the washers and shorten their life span.50-60m casts are quite good if you're using a boat rod, if it's a beach rod then with a bit of practice you can maybe double that.

I truley appreciate your point LB, and in no way do I see this as any form of personal attack at all on any of us anglers and see it only as constructive criticism. It appears to me that you have great passion also for the species and that is fantastic to say the least!! However, I can assure you that the two tagged fish swam off strongly. In regards to snapper recaptures SART has had one of its fish re-captured as soon as 5days after initial capture, proving that not only does tagging of Snapper work but the fish can be feeding again within as little as a few days even in the same location. I also know of another angler that has tagged 10fish in Ardrossan and out of those fish has had two fish captured by Pro's and they have rung them in. So fish are surviving quite well IMO. Signing a death warrant for the fish is putting it in the esky and taking it home. We make sure all fish swim off strongly and if it doesnt look like there going to do so then they get taken for the table.

Had the opportunity to go for a fish the other morning with Big Red and Urhookedfish, I jumped at the chance to get out in a boat again. This session we were going to target Snapper, can't imagine BR and UHF going for anything else :laugh:Hit the ramp at 4am and headed out, on the way out I started seeing little glowing things in the what wash of the boat, I said "Hey Brett there's a lot of lice around!" Brett's response was something along the lines of "ahhh :c "Got to the drop, I was actually feeling a little green and slipped a Kwell, didn't say anything to the guys, had to act tough and out went our lines. No bites, hmm weird, reel in the bait has been disintegrated. :c :c :c :c :c BR moved the boat into a better position and we tried again. From this point on my recollection of events get's a little hazy, so order of things is probably a bit out of whack.BR and Uhf had gotten bites and been snapped off, I sat there not expecting much and if I did get a bite, thought it would be rugger, if I was lucky. My rod loaded up, I thought Ooohhh crap my rig has moved and I'm snagged, I started to reel a bit, hmmm not snagged BANG BANG, I'M ON!!! :woohoo: Reeling in nearly ripping my arms off, Uhf loosened my drag a touch, Bang bang ZZZZZZZZZZzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz wind, wind, wind zzz, zzz, zzz, started to see colour, then it was netted. Wow I just landed my first legal red, it measured 96cm :woohoo: later on it weighed in at 9.1kg I must say I am pretty damn happy with my first red.Now a quote from Uhf... "Uhf and Big Red dicked around missing runs and tangling each other until finally getting their shite together"Big Red landed a very nice stonker, his first metro Red, well done mate followed by another by me :woohoo: couldn't believe I'd caught another. by this stage as happy as Uhf was for me and Big Red, I reckon he would have been a little irritated. Zzz Zzz Zzz, he's on... oh what a nice 20cm specimen it was  We fished on with guess who hook up to another awesome fish :woohoo: I couldn't believe the power these monsters had, very impressive!Uhf catching another fine 20cm specimen , then BAM BAM! Finally Uhf hooked up or "started to pull his weight" as Big Red said pulling in a great fish At one point I watched Uhf's T-Curve almost bend in half, he ran to grab his rod which was well and truly stuck in the rod holder, he grabbed it out and started a more casual retrieve, landing once again a very nice fish. All fish were measured and a bunch of them tagged and released, very cool to see a fish that big swim off to see another day.Now that the sun was up the Snapper had slowed and we went after a couple of Maks, we weren't too concerned if we didn't catch anything we were quite content with our mornings haul.We headed back in and transferred a couple of the Snapper we kept into my esky as a guy drove past he yelled out, "Ya gonna need a bigger esky boys!"I must say a big thank you to Big Red and Uhf for inviting me to come along. I had a great time and am now severely addicted to Snapper fishing.I'll finish with a video with a few of our catches and releases. I have to issue a strong language warning due to mainly Uhf's potty mouth

Howdy hookstersJIMBO hit the Murray mouth last night and met me at Snowdens ramp at 610am. We launched into a beautiful port morning and had a nice long run up river to a good dropoff infront of.some flats. Live bait caught, livebait rigged and we were away :)Not long before we noticed bait fish leaping out the water on the flats, so motored around to muscle in on the action. Nothing came of it unfortunately. But loads of gar and sts and shitties. ;)Phase two another big run to catch the north arm tide.Live bait was the go with Jimbo onto a good run early, but it wasn't to be two more runs and unmistakable tailbeats. Never got to turn its head. Was pretty frustrating to watch, so I rigged up a shitty on my back up rod. The tide was moving a bit too well, so I put a 6/0 through thee tip lip and the second 6/0 free as a stinger. Bzzzzzzz, she went off, my first run on a shitty I got done same as Jimbo. :c spewin!Jimbo fishes out of gear and I fish in gear, and both of us missed out in similar ways, so maybe the fish were just not taking a bait cleanly like I'm used too. Big shame Ive lost a bit of form for jimbos double port river trip, but I like to think he had a good ride in thee WARPIG and a decent sight see too.We hit the main river high, northarm and swan alley. We actually saw two mulloway, jimbo had like 6 hookup runs over the two days, but we just couldn't get one in the boat..... Well that's fishin ;)EPILOGUE : THE RESCUEI was so determined to get jimbo (me ) a jewie, that I stayed anchored up till the tide was fully hardcore racing, pumping like it sometimes does through the northarm. As we left, I noticed a couple people in a canoe seemed to be pushed up against the mangroves. I motored slow and went to check where the paddlers were before jumping on the plane...... O oh, no paddlers. Then I saw them pressed up hard against a wreck, IN the water. I figured they would right the canoe and get going. We were drifting hard now ourselves .Since they weren't righting themselves, we closely motored over and yeld 'youse okay?' answer came back 'Nup'.There was no way they were getting back in that canoe, so sea rescue team Jack&JImbo went into action. It was way harder to do than I would've thought. We were drifting, so I told em my plan and motored ahead, put the boat in reverse and just held in the current with my stern facing the.hapless couple. As the came close I put the engine outta gear and they soon reached my stern before the boat picked up drift again.Still had.to.get the buggers in, so I through a rope and manned the controls watching our drift cautiously as 1st mate.jimbo hoisted the passengers aboard. ladies first and then the canoes captain We emptied as much water out of the canoe as we could and towed it back to garden island. Two things mention:1. A dude up on the plane while staring at us pull the couple aboard.... Well done tool, as if it wasn't hard enough anyway :angry:2. In Angus inlet, two boats overtook me. I was going slow, but it's only 7knots anyway and the first skipper forced me.to change.course and then wash about in his wake. Bad driving dude... Seriously I AM Majorly sick of fair weather fools our there. he thought he was a bit special in his glass boat..... Well, perhaps it's best I didn't retrieve at garden island cos we would have had proper words :angry:FINALLY, our happy couple disembarked at garden island. Lovely couple they were too. AFTER jimbo stopped hitting on the.dudes mrs , I showed her pictures of my kids and we all had a laugh on our way back. They do the paddle often, but the tide stuffed em today, and I can see how things could easily go wrong for anyone in that rip. After a handshake the guy goes "lucky for plastic money" and gave me a. $fifty$. I tried to refuse, but he wouldn't have it back.Good run all the way to Snowdens. On the highway on the way home I thought "where's that $fifty$. So I pulled on the.shoulder incase it was in the boat lol.WHAT DO YOU KNOW, THE CANOING COUPLE SAW Me ON THE SIDE OF THE ROAD, THOUGHT I HAD BROKEN DOWN AND STOPPED TO HELP. How good it that. I gave.em.a thumbs up and was soon home to face the music from MY Mrs."SO WHATS YOUR EXCUSE THIS TIME??? "She said :laugh:I just showed her.this picture of mine and Jimbos new best mates :)REMEMBER people, a little bit of GOOD Karma goes a long long way.
